Dermot McIlroy Biography
Dermot McIlroy was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1963. His father was a carpenter and his mother played piano. The combination of both was to influence Dermot in later life. He trained as a carpenter and wood machinist for eleven years before joining the Lowden Guitar Co. in 1990. Since 1979 Dermot has been establishing himself on the local music scene as a guitarist / singer and songwriter and still travels around the world playing his music. He spent ten years with Lowden Guitars where he was trained by George Lowden and Japanese luthier Micky Uchida. Micky always told Dermot to find his own path, try different ways of doing things. It was this advise that ultimately led to the creation of McIlroy Guitars.
The company began on the 6th March 2000, although it was six months before the first guitars began manufacture. This time was spent getting the factory ready for production. Since then McIlroy guitars have gone on to become one of the most desired guitars in the world with many renowned musicians now playing one. The tone, playability, looks and quality of the McIlroy range is what sets it apart from others and is the reason why they say "It's only natural to want one"
