After
restoring a 1929 vintage Gibson 13-fret Brazilian Nick Lucas
guitar recently, John discovered there were some potentially
good qualities to this small footprint, deep body design which
might be improved upon by applying his own building experience
to this model. Using a very stiff, light, scalloped braced
top and fine Brazilian rosewood back and sides along with
the odd 25.25 inch scale length, John could coax a much better
sound out of this design than the original, which was already
quite good.
The idea was to recreate much
of the look of the original but use modern materials and techniques
to produce a very stable, powerful little guitar for finger
style playing. The NL does just that. Its stunning appearance
invites one to pick it up and play it, rewarding the player
with a rich, sweet, clear, singing tone that is both powerful
and refined.
