This guitar feels like royalty, the perfect blend of power and elegance. Michael Thames is one of our favorite nylon string builders, and we especially love his Double Top models like #979 from 2019. Indian Rosewood body with a Cedar/Balsa double top makes for a voice that pairs a smooth, enveloping bass register with cool and precise trebles. We love the note definition, and separation between the registers. This Thames DT has a very vocal quality that imparts a lot of body and color, which we continually found ourselves losing track of time with. Thames’ fit and finish is flawless here, especially with a translucent French Polish finish that lets the Rosewood and Cedar shine. The headstock is carved with an Ebony veneer and Rosewood underneath which sets off the Gotoh tuners handsomely. The build weight comes in at an incredibly light 3lbs 7oz; this Thames DT is a featherweight in hand, but with a vigorous and expressive voice under the strings.

The combination of Italian Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is to fingerstyle guitars what lettuce and tomatoes are to sandwiches: the perfect complement. This 2010 Classical from Santa Fe, New Mexico-based luthier Michael Thames is just the sort of perfection you need, if you’re interested in a guitar with clear, present bass notes and pronounced, articulate trebles.
The setup is silky and fast with a 650mm scale and 53mm nut, and the overall feathery weight makes for extra comfort and playability. We found there to be plenty of bark for vigorous passages, but this Thames also responded well to a lighter touch for more delicate pieces, where the meaty midrange can really shine. In splendid condition, this Thames still has a long life of music ahead of it.

Dake Traphagen continues to be one of our favorite modern classical builders in the States. With works of functional art like this 2021 build in hand, how could we not? Gorgeously dark Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, warm Red Cedar on top, slightly elevated fingerboard with a subtle, 20” radius, 20th fret extension with Evo fretwire to boot. Two MOP wheels are inlaid into the Mammoth Ivory tieblock, adding some elegant spice to the dark, warm color palette present elsewhere in the build. Gold Scheller tuners set into Dake’s understated headstock shape set it all off.

In 2012 Dake Traphagen took on the task of replicating a nylon jazz crossover of famed luthier Jimmy D’Aquisto—and the results are fantastic. This beauty, dubbed the D’Aquisto Nylon Jazz, is quick and energetic, easy on the hands, and rigged with an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL microphone/UST dual pickup for easy, authentic amplification. European Maple back and sides pair up with German Spruce on top, 25.6” scale, and a slim 1 11/16” nut for quick lefthand work. This Traphagen has been lovingly played across the past ten years and has the marks to prove it, but it’s in great functional shape and ready for more action.

We adore Dake Traphagen’s classicals. The man manages to coax voluminous bass response out of the same woods that offer clear and juicy trebles and an expressive midrange—this Classical from 2004 has all of that in spades. Fabulous Madagascar Rosewood back and sides paired with Cedar on top and an L.R. Baggs UST pickup with volume control in the soundhole, 650mm scale, and a completely opened up voice. True strength under these strings. Dake Traphagen’s Double Tops have all the added power of a laminated top plate, but without losing any of the warmth, color, and dynamism of a standard top. This model, dubbed “Joya,” from 2013? Fantastically precise, powerful, and elegant. The back and sides are upgraded, heirloom grade 250-year-old Brazilian Rosewood, here paired with a Cedar double top. French polished for maximum resonance and weighing in about 3.5lbs, this Traphagen is a livewire Classical that is so easy to lose yourself in. 12-hole tieback looks gorgeous and complements the scalloped saddle and nut, plus Dake adorned the soundhole with a gorgeous Burl rosette, in lieu of a traditional mosaic. This is a world class Concert instrument that exudes inspiration. What more could you ask for?

Livewire! This is one of Dake Traphagen’s Cyprus-backed Classicals (although Dake confirms he could easily modify it to be a Flamenco) with an Italian Spruce top and an L.R. Baggs pickup that’s itching to get playing. This beauty comes to us from 2014, and it’s got the marks to prove that it hasn’t been sitting around collecting dust over the past five years. A soundport in the upper bout keeps the player better in tune with their playing, and the lightweight build and quick setup combine to keep playability easy.

It’s a beautiful thing when we get to see a loved guitar return to the fold: we originally offered this Traphagen Double Top in 2008 straight from Dake’s shop, and we’re excited to offer it here again in 2020! Palo Escrito back and sides paired with a double top combining Swiss Spruce and Cedar, this Classical has fierce, incredible power and projection. Warmth and overtones fill out the trebles in particular. Elsewhere, this beauty has a small soundport at the upper bout, elevated fingerboard, and Sloane tuners. It has opened up handsomely in the past 12 years, and it’s in fabulous shape to boot.
