2007 Sexauer Dream Series #5 JB-15 Fan Fret Brazilian/German
Bruce Sexauer is known for tone. His guitars have an unmistakable energy and liveness that is very reminiscent of prewar guitars. He is also one of the few builders we’ve invited to make a Dream Series for us and it is a truly special design. Based on his Sexauer JB-15, this is a multiscale 000 14 fret body that is asymmetrical and crafted from the finest old Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce. The finish is a very thin varnish that insures all the tone comes out. It includes snakewood bindings, handmade Rogers Tuners and a Calton case to keep this treasure safe.

Brand New Skytop GC, Spalted Tamarind/Teredo Sitka Spruce
At long last, Eric Weigeshoff has finished our custom build for Yasmin Williams! This Skytop GC is what fine lutherie is all about: Teredo-hole Sitka Spruce, Spalted Tamarind back and sides, multiscale fretboard, twin soundports and Bloodwood appointments—James May Ultra Tonic pickup, Visesnut flight case, and more percussive fingerstyle fun than you can shake a pocketful of acrylic nails at. We’d say the only thing missing is a player to warm it up, but we’re sure Yasmin will keep this Skytop in hand and lap to make music for many years to come.

2016 Somogyi Jumbo, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Here at Dream Guitars we hold Ervin Somogyi, the grandfather of modern fingerstyle lutherie, in the highest esteem. How could we not? His designs and techniques have helped pave the way for an entirely new style of responsive guitar. So it comes as a special honor to have this 2016 Jumbo in our hands today. This is the third of a trio of bespoke builds Ervin crafted for a client, each featuring a unique patio stone headplate with Rodgers tuners, carved rosette, and sail boat inlaid at the heel. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pairs with Sitka Spruce on top, plus a 26-25″ multiscale setup and 12 fret neck. The carved rosette is an incredibly intricate series of celtic hounds backed with red washi paper.

1996 Somogyi Thin Modified Dreadnought, Indian Rosewood/European Spruce
Take the legendary California Guitar Trio, pair them with Ervin Somogyi, and the results are stunning. Hideyo Moriya of CGT worked with Ervin in 1996 to build this Thin Modified Dreadnought as the ultimate performing guitar, rigged out with a 26-25.125” multiscale fretboard, florentine cutaway, and a thin body design that was further enhanced with a Manzer-style body wedge. The result is a featherweight Somogyi that is equally at home for picks, fingertips, standard tuning, NST, DADGAD, you name it. Straight-grain Indian Rosewood body pairs with European Spruce top and one of Ervin’s famous segmented rosette. Recently, Hideyo had Ray Kraut (appropriate as one of Ervin’s former apprentices) refinish this beauty and remove the original pickup system, making it all acoustic. Hideyo put so much time into this guitar, a refinish was very due! Now it looks gorgeous and ready for more action. Additionally, Ray also converted the previous pickup’s side-mounted preamp into a squared up soundport, giving the player a little more “me in the monitor.” Wrapped up in the original Calton case, itself very familiar with the road but in perfect working order, this 1996 Somogyi Thin Modified Dreadnought is safe and sound. 2007 Somogyi 000-12, Brazilian Rosewood/Bearclaw Sitka
It’s a sincere pleasure to meet guitars again after they’ve seen a bit of the world. Paul couldn’t agree more, when this Somogyi 000 came strolling in the door. He commissioned this very guitar from Ervin in 2007, and he pulled out every. single. stop to make sure it was the perfect instrument. Brazilian Rosewood to make your grandpa cry, a Bearclaw Sitka set on top, tight-grained and amber, custom Rodgers tuners, hand-carved rosette and end graft with a celtic flair—the list goes on. Paul ordered a 12-fret neck for this 000 to maximize the sweetness and warmth of the tone, and added a multiscale board (26” bass to 25” treble) to keep that sweetness and clarity across the myriad of tunings he employs. Right down to the asymmetrical neck carve (borrowed from Al Beardsell’s necks), laminated saddle, and scalloped nut, this Somogyi stands apart from the already rarified crowd that makes up Ervin’s body of work. Back at Dream Guitars for a reprised role as coolest guitar in the shop, this beauty is available for the next lucky owner to claim it!

2018 Taran Tirga Mhor, Swartsa Wamara/European Spruce
This 2018 Taran Tirga Mhor features European Spruce on top and a very new-to-us back and sides made of Swartsa Wamara, which is as gorgeous visually as it is sonically. The Tirga Mhor is Rory Dowling’s take on a 000 design. Named after a Scottish mountain, it has 12 frets to the body with Evo frets and semi-hemispherical ends. It’s fitted with a multiscale setup of 26″ on the bass and 25.5″ on the treble extremities. A Wenge neck with a perfectly soft V profile and a sound port offer an exquisite view inside the guitar, showcasing Taran Guitars’ special construction. This guitar is also stage or studio-ready with a K&K Trinity Pickup system, allowing you to recreate the magic you hear in your lap on stage or in recordings. This guitar is so much fun and so refreshing. We have become huge fans of Taran Guitars here at the shop, and we can’t wait to see even more from them.

2007 Tippin Staccato Cuban Mahogany/Salmon Crate Sitka
From 2007, a Bill Tippin Staccato in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce. This is his modern take on the traditional Parlor or 0-sized guitar. It’s the perfect body style for the player seeking a comfortable, easy-playing guitar without sacrificing tone. Like every Tippin, the Staccato boasts a big voice, strong projection, as well as depth and complexity. This beautiful guitar features very rare Cuban Mahogany (Swietenia mahogani), the densest type of Mahogany, known for its fine, rich texture. Its density provides greater sustain and a more complex tone compared to Honduran Mahogany. Bill topped it with rare Salmon Spruce, which was submerged for many years and exhibits more silking than you can imagine. Silking, or medullary rays, indicates that the wood is perfectly quarter-sawn and demonstrates its tensile strength.

Bill’s small-bodied Staccato model paired with a 25.7-24.9″ multiscale setup, Madagascar Rosewood body and “Salmon Crate” Sitka Spruce top, African Blackwood bindings with a Koa rosette, and one of Bill’s trademark soundports at the upper bout.

2014 Tippin Custom Crescendo Fan Fret Brazilian/Moonspruce
This amazing Custom Tippin Crescendo Multiscale was originally custom built for us by Master Luthier Bill Tippin. Old Growth Brazilian, Moon Spruce and a 25.5-26.25 multiscale were chosen to make this a super versatile guitar, this one can do it all! The multiscale insures that the Bass will never get weak and the Trebles will always sing! Bill added an Armrest Bevel and stunning Flamed Koa Bindings along with his elegant Sparkle MOP top trim and exquisite Yin-Yang inlay at the 12th fret. This guitar is inspiring in everyway and that’s what it’s all about. Here’s a great video of Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb that features this Tippin guitar.
We loved this one so much that we teamed up with Al Petteway and recorded it on our latest album: Dream Guitars Volume II Hand Picked. It is Track #16 – The South Wind.

This guitar and the last have been among the very best sounding guitars that Paul and Al have ever heard, period. 2016 Traugott BK Multiscale, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
A 2016 model BK from tonewood virtuoso Jeff Traugott with Brazilian Rosewood, German Spruce, and a multiscale fretboard? The options are limitless. We’ll try to keep it professional, but it’s hard to talk about this guitar without using hyperbole to articulate its inspirational qualities. This is the sort of guitar that will do just about everything you want it to, and do it effortlessly with a shocking clarity. Note to note and string to string, this Traugott BK has pristine separation and sustain, making fingerstyle arrangements incredibly detailed, and flatpicked passages crisp and defined. The sustain is unwavering. Let’s call it haunting. In your gut you can feel the heft of every note as it careens out of the pearl-bound soundhole. The top is also bound in pearl, while the 27 to 25.4 inch multiscale fretboard remains inky black with only position markers on the side. This Brazilian Rosewood is from Jeff’s secret stash of “Kentucky” Brazilian, the stock of which was originally used in veneer mills outside of Knoxville, Tennessee around 1900 to 1920. This is the real deal: the same kind of Brazilian Rosewood found on the best pre-war Martins. It’s particularly special to Jeff, since he was able to repurpose such beautiful, old growth wood.
With a Traugott like this in your hands, bad dreams are a lifetime away. Don’t blame us if your personal and professional lives suffer from inattention.

2008 Traugott R Fan Fret Brazilian/German
Here we have a very special Traugott R multiscale in perfect Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce. This particular Traugott has garnered some high praise by some incredibly talented musicians, our own Al Petteway has said it is the best Traugott he has ever played, Tony McManus had some choice words to say about it, Paul Heumiller himself even owned this one for a while, it is that good. This Model R sports some of the nicest woods that Jeff had in his collection, the Brazilian is dark with some nice ink lines, and the German Spruce is tight grained with lovely Bear Clawing inthe lwer bout. It’s Jeff’s voicing that has really put him on the map, and that voice is in force here, the trebles are fat and full with plenty of power and sustain, the multiscale (25.6″-27″) even out the rest from punchy mids to full thundering bass strings. This baby has it all!

2021 Wilborn Nautilus, Mahogany/Sitka Spruce
Take a page out of Ben Wilborn’s book, and you’ll be writing some fine prose indeed. His Comma Series flattops are exceptional modern builds, combining offset soundholes with multiscale necks, elevated fingerboards, arm bevels–the works. This 2021 Nautilus is precisely that! With Mahogany back and sides plus Sitka Spruce top and a florentine cutaway, 25.4-25″ multiscale setup, and Schertler tuners. Brand New Wilborn Nautilus, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
This is another incredible example of Ben Wilborn’s not inconsiderable gifts to the world of modern lutherie. His Nautilus model, part of the new Comma Series, features an offset soundhole, twin bevels for creature comfort, a multiscale setup with 25.5” on the bottom and 25” on top—and this custom build has be(e)n upgraded to the max with chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood for the body, master grade Adirondack Spruce on top, and a K&K Pure Mini pick with vintage 1/8” output jack. Hands down, this guitar kills.
