1943 Martin 000, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
When our repair staff get a hold of a project Martin with great potential, they make sure the job’s done right. We took in this 1943 000 as a 000-21 with a number of issues, and over time stabilized everything and brought it back to life, then took it one step further and upgraded the appointments from a 21 to more of a 40 or 42 style hybrid. Ken and Joe did an incredible job bringing this beauty back into premium playing shape, and now it’s raring to go!

1969 was the last year for Martin to use Brazilian Rosewood on stock models, yet this D-35 doesn’t suffer for a bottom of the barrel set. The three-piece back has a mixture of lovely figure and straight grain, and pairs up with Sitka Spruce on top and a wide open voice. Our repair staff has gone over this one tuners to tail, including a fresh neck reset, and it’s playing like a well-oiled dream.

And then there was a 45 from ’38. Just handling this piece of prewar history is an honor, let alone to play it—and we’re honored to offer it to you. Before discontinuing the series in 1942, Martin only built 265 45-series flattops, making only 19 000s in 1938. The venerable T.J. Thompson has handled this beauty before and vouches for its originality, as do we and our repair staff after having gone over it tuner to tail. Inside, this one has some interesting features that further set it apart. 1938 was the transition year from forward X-braced tops to rear X; look inside and you’ll see notches in the kerf lining for a forward X (with serial 69896 putting it early in ’38), but the X is actually rear shifted. Thompson confirms that it is an original Martin top with period correct pearl, and offers that the build could have started early in the year and was shelved for some reason until after the factory transitioned to rear X tops. Alternatively, the original top could have failed within the year and was replaced in 1938 or 1939 with a rear X. Regardless, this 000-45 plays like a sweet dream, and rings, rings, rings. It’s in a category of its own, and has been played in just enough for that wide awake sound, without a lot of wear and tear. Holy grail, indeed.

This is the kind of guitar to write home to the folks about. We are floored by this little 00-18 from 1928. Just floored. The voice is immense, colorful, powerful, and the trebles have incredibly beautiful overtones that ring out and out. Fantastic for fingerstyle work, and it holds up handsomely under a pick too. This Martin 00-18 has been cared for over the years and comes to us with a clean bill of health and ready for more action. The Mahogany body has a few cracks, which have been stabilized. Bridge plate has been replaced, and a thin patch has been installed over the area to reinforce it—and the Adirondack Spruce top rings out loud and clear and true. This 00 very much punches about its weight. The setup is silky smooth to boot; the bar frets here are some of the easiest-playing bars we’ve handled in quite some time. In hand, this gem from 1928 almost floats away: it weights 2.75lbs. That’s it. These tonewoods have been torrefied the old school way! Super lightweight, super resonant. We urge you to snag this one before we decide to keep it for ourselves.

We landed a treasure trove of vintage pieces which our repair folks have lovingly restored to peak playing condition—this Martin 0-17 was built in 1937 and is still ready for action! The 0 size is petite, but by no means quiet (the intervening decades having done some work on opening up the all-Mahogany body), and the setup is that of a brand new guitar.
Coming to you at a trim 3lbs 11oz, this 0-17 is a featherweight player that’s easy on the hands, and the finish on the neck is worn through on the cheeks for that old-pair-of-jeans feel. It also has a Barcus Berry bridge plate pickup that sounds great plugged straight in to an acoustic amp.Other keywords: c.f. martin, martin guitar, 24.9, vintage, pre-war, prewar, all mahogany, #66703

This is a beautifully preserved 1937 000-18 that’s very, very ready for more action. Our repair folks have gone over it from tuner to tail to confirm that, and given this Martin a clean bill of health. Adirondack Spruce over Mahogany, lightweight at 3lbs 13oz, with a few repairs over the years to keep it in tip top shape. We’ve got both the original tuners and the original case, and can ship this beauty either the originals or with the Waverly Relic’d tuners (currently installed) and an aftermarket case. The voice is crisp and woody with even decay across the strings. It fingerpicks very well, and takes to a flatpick pretty naturally to boot. We love the cleanness and clarity; the balance across the registers really makes for well-defined chords. This prewar beauty is a classic 000-18 all the way.

Warm, balanced, and sweetly responsive. We’ve landed a lovely Martin D-35 from 1969 with three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back in & sides, Sitka Spruce top, and an opened up voice to boot! With the right kind of mojo, this beauty feels easy and familiar in your hands, and plays particularly smoothly for a Dreadnought. Our resident flatpick phenom Allen Shadd liked the warm, mellow tone, and we have to agree. It sets this one apart from the typical Bluegrass cannon. It keeps up fine for flatpicking fiddle tunes, but it remains clean and responsive when played softly and for other genres as well. A dynamic D-35 with 50 years under its belt and ready for action.

A lovely piece of history that’s alive and well! We’ve landed a beautiful Martin D-28 that comes to us from all the way back in 1938. Brazilian Rosewood to make a builder cry today, Adirondack Spruce top that’s yellowed to perfection, and honest play wear to prove this D-28 hasn’t been wasting away the decades under the bed. Lightweight and agile, the neck is smooth to the touch like an old, Mahogany banister, and it plays as easily.
Luthier Danny Bishop has recently gone over this vintage gem and given it a clean bill of health after replacing an oversized bridge with a vintage Martin bridge of the proper, original dimensions that Danny has kept in his shop for over 30 years. Danny confirmed the bridgeplate is original to the guitar, and after resetting the neck he installed new frets with period correct wire and dialed the setup in.
The heelblock is stamped #71802, making it one of the last built in 1938, of only 121 for that year. From October 1938 to June 1939, these were made with a 1 3/4 inch nut and no popsicle brace, making this particular period quite desirable.
This is the real vintage deal for a ’38 D-28 that’s seen miles of action, and is ready for a whole lot more.Other keywords: vintage guitar, dreadnaught, dreadnought, brazilain, adriondack, flat picking, flatpick, flatpicking, bluegrass, american guitar, cf martin, C.F. Martin

A hallmark of the vintage Martin world: the D-18. Ours comes to us from 1937, and it’s kept itself in great shape for the past eighty years. The neck carve starts out in a smooth-cheeked C-profile, then slowly the point of a soft-V shape emerges as you travel along the neck toward the heel. Frets are freshly dressed by our repair team, and we’ve dialed in the setup for easy playability and lots of meat left to the saddle. The body was refinished at some point in this Martin’s past, but that über woody Mahogany tone is untouched! The tuners and bridge plate are both original, and If you look closely at the top, you’ll see the Adirondack is tight-grained and straight beneath the shaded burst. This Martin has been partially refinished by the venerable John Allison of Austin, Texas.
Mahogany dreads from the 30s have a dry, explosive tone that’s all their own, and this D-18 is no exception: digging in with a flatpick yields lots of crunch, and the projection is such that you might want to consider wearing ear plugs. It’s an obvious choice for Bluegrass, but we also enjoyed fingerpicked Blues and some forays into Old Time and Appalachian fiddletunes. The woody clarity of the voice lends itself to a variety of styles, and the setup is such that you can easily transition between fingertips and flatpicks and various attacks. Included is a sturdy Calton flight case to make sure she stays safe and sound whenever you have to put it down (you have to sleep eventually, right?). This Martin has come many miles to have arrived at our shop today, and we’re confident you’ll spend a lifetime exploring all those miles locked away in Mahogany, Adi Spruce, Ebony and Ivoroid.

A piece of history which gave us goosebumps at first sight: Kevin Odegard’s 1969 Martin D-28, featured on Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks. This was also the last year for such beautiful Brazilian Rosewood to grace a standard D-28, and the decades of playing that Kevin has put it through since have given the Sitka top a well-loved and played-in appearance. We can only guess at how many hours of music this Martin has seen since 1969. The neck feels familiar and intimate with a few faint marks along the back, and the slim 1 11/16” nut makes for quick and easy left hand work. But what really makes us smile? This Martin is still ready for action. Kevin has installed a Fishman Ellipse Blend pickup + mic system, and the setup is dialed in just like a well-oiled tone machine should be. Not only is this D-28 a piece of American history, it’s also a guitar that’s eager to keep singing its heart out. We’re honored Kevin has entrusted a Martin with so much pedigree to our care, and we’re honored to offer it now to you.

A handsome piece of history that’s opened up sweetly, and has been restored to peak playability from the folks at Martin! From the first pluck, we were stunned by the volume, clarity, and sustain of this 1963 Martin D-18. Not only is the setup delightfully easy on the hands, but there’s plenty of meat left on the saddle too. That makes for a better transfer of string energy into the Sitka Spruce top, which in turn cranks up the volume for an edge over your bandmates.
This beauty is a flatpicking machine, with that dry Mahogany crunch and clarity. This ‘63 D-18 has an extra helping of mellow midrange, which sets it apart from a new D-18’s shrillness. Single owner for over 55 years, it’s now finally ready for owner #2. Please note, this guitar comes with the original nut, saddle, bridge, and Grover tuners in the case.

An absolutely wonderful 1888 Martin Style 1-21. All original and it even includes the wooden Coffin Case! This Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce parlor guitar was obviously stored away for most of it’s life. Master Luthier Bill Tippin went over this guitar for us and did a great setup on the bar frets and it plays like a dream. The voice is as big as an OM, just huge like a piano. We all love this little sweetheart. But then we are suckers for a great guitar that’s over 120 years old!

Opened up and broken in: check out our latest vintage D-28. This gem comes to us all the way from 1961, and it’s still in fine working order today. The Brazilian back and sides are nicely quartersawn with black inking and rich clay color, paired with an amber-hued Sitka Spruce top. The soft V neck is slim; coupled with a slick setup this Martin is a breeze to play, and will really belt it out when you dig in.
Our repair team has gone over the guitar and given it a fresh setup and a clean bill of health. There have been a few repairs over the years, but everything’s in great shape and the voice is crisp with a hearty middle register and well-balanced basses and trebles. This D-28 is a powerful tone machine from 1961 that won’t murder the billfold. Ready to be played!
