2016 Greven The 000-12 Custom, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
Power and poise, in a petite package! This 2016 Greven is the real deal, folks, a powerhouse that loves an aggressive attack but has the responsiveness and dynamic range to bloom under a light touch too. Fingers and picks both welcome! We don’t often find guitars that really manage to work well for both, but this 000-12 Custom is one of those rare pieces. Moreover this beauty is outfitted with gorgeous, straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood and high-altitude harvested Engelmann Spruce, has a chunky and wide neck that’s oh. so. comfortable with its 1 25/32” nut, and subtle Abalone top trim to tie it all together. The voice pairs up a lively and warm bass response with a rich midrange and smooth, glassy top end. It’s a great choice for Standard as well as DADGAD and even C tunings. The Engelmann Spruce John used here came from a tree cut from the top of a range in the Rockies, and features incredibly tight grain. John typically preferred not using Engelmann, but these few sets had the qualities we associate with Adirondack—headroom, clarity, power—and John put them to proper use. The Brazilian is even more unique: this prewar straight-grain stock came from a 1937 log that yielded only a handful of sets. This lines up with Martin stock of the time as well, and as John believes, could have come from near where Martin sourced their coastal Brazilian Rosewood with its characteristic reds and dark winter growth lines.

2015 Greven OM-40, Old Growth Brazilian Rosewood/Master Grade Adirondack Spruce
2015 Greven OM 40 Style 1937, with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a master-grade Adirondack Spruce top. An excellent modern offering of a classic, true-to-form vintage design. With ten years under its belt at the time of publication, this one is wide open and alive.
It features a full neck profile, wide spacing at the nut and saddle, and that ever-comfortable OM body. Often, a guitar that can do many things well loses a bit of character in the process—but one of the hallmarks of the pre-war OM is its ability to handle everything with authority. This Greven captures that perfectly.
For fingerstyle, it’s a dream; for flatpicking, it feels like it has unlimited headroom. This medium-sized box is a true banjo-killer (we don’t condone the harm of banjos or their caretakers!). Well cared for and well played, this guitar will bring out the best in whoever’s lucky enough to make it their own.

1975 Henderson Banjo #5
We’re already very familiar with Wayne Henderson’s flattops—and we love them dearly. We’ve been fortunate enough to have seen a great number pass through our hands, but until today we’ve never seen what Wayne can do with a Bluegrass Banjo. This Mastertone-inspired wonder was built all the way back in 1975 with gold etched hardware, Maple resonator, and tight flamed Maple neck. This is #5 of only 19 banjos that Wayne has built to date, each unique, and this is one of only two with “Henderson” inlaid at the headstock. Long scale setup at 27” and 1 3/16” nut; a hefty 10lbs 13oz; broken in and opened up tone.

2018 Isaac Jang OM, Beeswing Cocobolo/Italian Alpine Spruce
Delicious. Rich, velvety, butter-smooth. We love this 2018 Jang OM from tuner to tail. The setup is that slinky sweet spot that’s perfect for fingerstyle in a range of tunings and easy on the hands with a 1 13/16” nut. Note clarity is exquisite; precision is the name of the game when it comes to this one’s voice. Then there’s the eye candy. Dramatically figured “Beeswing” Cocobolo back and sides—yes, please—paired with a creamy Italian Alpine Spruce top and Isaac’s Uchida-Style “Bendaway” cutaway, as well as a Subtle Manzer Wedge body contour, makes for a striking presentation that’s comfortable to boot. 2022 Ivanov 00, Koa/Western Red Cedar
Dontcho Ivanov spares no detail with this 2022 00 in Koa and Cedar. Fit and finish are flawless, rendered in high gloss to show off the flame figuring on the Koa back and sides, as well as the rich Red Cedar top. Lacewood trim sets off those woods perfectly. The 00 body is paired with a 12-fret neck and a 25″ scale for sweetness and warmth, with a lively, energetic response. In a word, very fun!
And it’s the little things that really set this one apart for us. Dontcho carves his headstock plates with a unique relief, and you’ll find a similar treatment at the wings of the bridge.
