This Avalon d300a is a treat to play and listen to. The finely quartered Mahagony back and sides which gives it a nice warmth. Combined with a Spruce top, this one has a lovely overtone presence almost reminiscent of a Rosewood guitar. The strings remain distinct and even up and down the fingerboard with a nice sparkle on the high strings. It has handled everything we threw at it, from finger picking to strumming. Fretting for fingerstyle or flatpicking both feel at home here. That vintage vibe is easy on the eyes as well. The sunburst Mahogany and Spruce are eye catchers for sure, and would be right at home in the 1930's.
It's amazing how well this guitar handles fingerpicking and strumming! It is a bigger bodied guitar, but it sits well in your lap and is easy to play. It's also stunning to look at, one of the best sunbursts I have seen lately.
I was really surprised with this guitar. Being a dread sized body, I was prepared to do a strumming demo, but after playing it for a while, I found it to be a great fingerstyle guitar and I ended up playing a fingerstyle demo. The sunburst and the trim give it a strong Gibson vibe. The neck is very playable and comfortable with bar chords and open positions. It works well as a strummer too, so I think it would be a great all around guitar.
