1995 Humphrey Millennium Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce
Here we’ve landed a great example of Thomas Humphrey’s Millenium design from 1995, rigged up with Brazilian Rosewood under Spruce, a 650mm scale, and 51mm nut. At the soundhole we have a flower mosaic rosette which offers some color, pairing nicely with the warmly aged surrounding Spruce. A full neck profile with a slight C shape, terminating at the body with the elevated fingerboard extension design ubiquitous to the Millenium. This beauty has been lovingly played in since 1995 and has the marks to prove it, and for us this helps explain the wide open, powerful voice—you only sound this good when you’ve had a lot of music pass through your strings.

The Classical guitar community lost the great Thomas Humphrey too soon in 2008, and that loss has been felt ever since. We’re grateful and honored to have one of his last Millenium models, built in 2007, here to offer. The Millennium design, now ubiquitous in contemporary Classical construction, features Humphrey’s elevated fingerboard, dramatic body taper, and hybrid X bracing. The results are felt in both playability and tone: this Humphrey Millennium is easy on the hands and has an incredibly distinct voice. The treble register pushes out and away from the soundhole with great clarity and weight; the voice has a visceral quality that is mesmerizing. The body boasts chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Cedar on top and a floral mosaic rosette.

We are delighted to be able to offer this rare Thomas Humphrey Millenium guitar. It starts with a tremendous set of straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood and is topped with well-matured Spruce. This is a rare one where Tom used his curved ‘smiley-face’ bridge design and is a 660 scale.
Luthier, and head of Guitar at Furman University, Steven Walter went over this instrument for us and made a new bridge, refretted it and touched up the French Polish breathing wonderful new life into this wonderful guitar. This guitar is suitable for the highest level of player and has a very clear and articulate voice that is at once powerful and lyrical. This is a tremendous example of Humphrey’s great work.

This wonderful 1990 Humphrey Millenium comes to us from National Fingerpicking Champ Todd Hallawell. He had Master Luthier Ervin Somogyi go over the guitar recently so it’s in perfect order. The french polish has been freshened so the guitar looks young again, but the voice clearly is matured to perfection under the hands of a master player. Every note leaps out of this Humphrey Millenium with clarity and power. The magic of Humphrey’s Millenium design is that the sloped soundboard and elevated fingerboard cause the strings to pull at a steeper angle. This one features his Radial Bracing. The result is greater volume and easy access to the highest frets. Even with Tom Humphrey’s passing his Millenium will forever live as one of the greatest guitar designs and this is a supreme example.

Prior to the arrival of the Humphrey Millennium, Thomas was building in a more traditional style, and many of his early instruments were based on Hermann Hauser guitars. Gradually, Humphrey found ways to combine the traditional design with more power, a faster voice and a huge palate of timbres. These are also considered to be a very important guitar for the collector who wishes to completely represent the history of American guitar making.
Sadly, Thomas passed away in April 2008
