2008 Kinnaird CS Deluxe, Cocobolo/Adirondack Spruce
This beautiful Kinnaird CS Deluxe has opened up handsomely—blooming into a sweet rose with Cocobolo and Adirondack Spruce and slotted headstock, Abalone appointments, and a tasty shade top finish. Exquisite warmth characterizes the voice with a colorful dynamic range that works perfectly for fingerstyle, and mixes up great across the registers. Stephen Kinnaird brought this one to life in 2008, and the intervening years have opened it wide. Sweet and rich, with great note separation to make individual notes pop.

Stephen Kinnaird’s P-1c is a petite powerhouse if ever we saw one. Modeled after the early Martin 1-18 design, the Kinnaird P-1c weighs in under four pounds with a trim lower bout of 12 7/8” and sides that taper from 3 1/2” at the heel to 4” at the tail. This 2010 beauty comes decked out with select Figured Maple back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top with dark sunburst, Florentine Cutaway for a touch of the modern. Brazilian Rosewood bindings, head plate, bridge, and rosette! And Stephen’s MOP inlay chops sprawling across the guitar from rosette to tuners.
Short scale at 25”, plus a 12-fret body join, makes for sweetness to mellow the bright Maple projection. We enjoyed putting this one through its paces in Standard and Open G, and while it shines best with a fingerpicker’s touch we found it also held up well for some strumming. The treble strings have a round, smooth quality that ties it all together in a sweet voice.Other keywords: steven kinnaird, parlour guitar, ameritage, englemann

While exploring somewhere deep into the cavernous recesses of the Luthier’s Mercantile lumber supply, Stephen Kinnaird discovered an incredible set of Bubinga that he just had to have. Once he paired it with a delicious Sinker Redwood top, the guitar practically built itself. This 2014 P-1 is brand new, and already the voice is absurd. Use whichever words you prefer–huge, fat, grand, rich, enveloping, sonorous–and they will all come up a bit short to describe the complexity of this instrument. Notes might actually sustain for days. Give it a strum and start counting, and while you wait for those sweet, rich notes to expire, explore the depths of the whorls in the Bubinga back and sides, and the panoply of colors in the Sinker Redwood top. You might find yourself caught between staring and playing. Stephen knows how to build a Parlor guitar, that much is certain.

Stephen Kinnaird is one of our regular builders and we love the voice of his instruments. This FSC-12 model is his Fingerstyle body shape. The 00 body size makes for superb balance and clarity, but we are hear to tell you this little guitar is strong as well. The treble strings are deep and full and the Cuban Mahogany and Red Cedar top offer up both growl and beauty depending on how you attack it. There is a wonderful dark burst on the top back and sides that really shows off the deep curl of the Cuban Mahogany. This is a keeper for some lucky player!

After falling in love with a lovely Parlor Stephen Kinnaird made for us some time ago we custom ordered this little sweetheart, P-1 Parlor Model. Once again it is Amore! Stephen used an extraordinary set of Quilted Spanish Cedar for the body and topped it with Italian Spruce. The neck is lightweight Spanish Cedar and it adorned with Kingwood accents. The result is a superb clear and articulate voice that is very responsive as well. This is one of those guitars you’ll want to keep close so you can grab it every chance you get.

Here’s an amazing sounding Kinnaird CS model in Pao Ferro and Engelmann Spruce. Beautifully appointed with a side sounport, Macassar Ebony bindings on the head, fingerboard and neck and featuring tone galore. This Stephen Kinnaird guitar has a voice much bigger than it’s 15 1/2″ body might suggest and the port give the player a full rich earful. This guitar has great balance and clarity and the 13 Fret neck keeps the bridge nearer the sweetspot and you can really hear it in the lovely treble strings. This one has a wide fingerboard as well. A wonderful mid size guitar with a big sound.

This is our first guitar from Maker Steven Kinnaird of Texas and what a beauty. High Curl Western Big Leaf maple with a nearly black sunburst makes for dramatic hide and seek with the figure of the Maple. The sides and neck are tone to match as well. The top is Engelmann which adds a decided warmth to the responsiveness of the Maple. The voice is very strong, very rich and beautiful. From top to bottom, literally, the adornments are stunning. Starting with the unique shape of the slotted headstock which is guilded in Gold and White Pearl, also bound and bordered. Then comes a solid Pearl nut that Steven Kinnaird said he’s always wanted to try. Then on to the beautifully bound and bordered fingerboard that is dressed again in a lovely mix of Gold and White Pearl. Lastly, the rosette is captivating with shell inset into deep black wood. White perflings on all sides add lovely contrast to the dark burst and bring the canvas to life. But when you are not staring at it you will love playing this guitar. It’s alive, beautiful, easy to hold and to play. It’s at once a gentleman’s guitar and a man’s guitar…

John Kinnaird pulled out all the stops on this beautiful Mini Jumbo (SJ). For starters there is a stunning set of figured Koa, which is become very hard to find. Then there is the sunburst Engelmann top, cutaway, armrest bevel, abalone top border and lovely inlays. The voice however is my favorite part, it’s full and rich with great Koa sparkle. There is abundant bass which plays beautiful against the rich trebles. This is a versatile guitar that will handle many situations and do so with elegant style.

It was a turning point for my brother John and me when we visited the shop of J. Rhyne, a luthier in Atlanta, GA. Before then I assumed guitars could only be made in factories. It was a revelation to see a lone individual making world class instruments. We left that day with the ambition to do the same. So while I was finishing a degree in music, I was also studying as much as I could find about guitar construction.
By the year 1980, I felt confident enough to accept a commission to build a guitar for a friend. In a few months’ time that first guitar was finished, and I was hooked. In the ensuing years I have developed a style that shows an appreciation of the great guitars of the past, while leaving room for personal expression. As a custom builder each instrument is approached as unique, and no two are exactly alike. I find great satisfaction in the challenge of designing an instrument that meets the needs of each customer.
