1984 Robert Mattingly Classical, Indian Rosewood/German Spruce
This Mattingly Classical is a well-preserved treasure from one of America’s cherished luthiers. Built all the way back in 1984, this Concert Classical is in superb condition today, with only a few marks in spite of its many years. It’s been in one person’s hands all this time, and now we’re looking for the next person to take on this beautiful, responsive, and eminently playable Mattingly. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce on top, and Robert carved the neck with a sweet and subtle curve that feels silky in the hand. 650mm scale, rope style bindings and mosaic rosette, and Robert’s hallmark scalloped nut completes the image. This 1984 Mattingly comes with its original hardshell case and case cover.

A beautiful blast from the past. We’re happy and proud to have landed this Concert Classical from Robert Mattingly, which comes to us all the way from 1967 in Flamed Maple and Spruce. The voice is quick, lively, and immediately rewarding; the evidence of an instrument that’s been played in and opened up completely. At some point in its long life (so far!), this Mattingly was played as a Flamenco guitar, and has twin clear tap plates and nail marks to prove it. We’ve gone over the instrument head to toe and can confirm that it’s in great playing shape, ready for many more years to yet.

R.L. (Bob) Mattingly made fine classical instruments and was the owner of “The World of Strings”, a music store in Long Beach, CA. His career as a luthier began in the early ’60s and he was primarily self taught. In the early 70’s he visited many of the great builders in Spain, and even spent a couple of days in the shop with his hero Miguel Rodriguez. Mattingly built over 700 guitars before his untimely death in 1992.
This incredible 1968 Mattingly has tons of character and mojo. It is one of those instruments that you wish could talk. The playability is excellent. The Rosewood back and sides and Spruce top yield a tone that embodies decades of tradition–a round, robust sound with great mids. This very collectible and very musical Mattingly will be a treasure for some lucky player.
