Santa Cruz, California, is home to an incredibly large pool of guitar builders. While some are alumni of the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, others have forged their own way. Matthew Mustapick, located just outside of town in Soquel, is one of the latter. Driven by the idea of an instrument that blends the attributes of classical and steel-string guitars, Mustapick began building guitars in 2003, leaving behind a high-tech job at an Internet company in Silicon Valley. Mustapick began to educate himself in the art of lutherie by reading books, doing research on the Internet, and playing as many guitars as possible.
