Leo Posch builds excellent guitars in the tradition of the great mid-century Gibsons and pre-war Martins, and this slope-shouldered Dreadnought exemplifies his dedication to the great tone embodied in those classic instruments. The Adirondack Spruce used here is an essential ingredient in achieving that tone, and the Hormigo Leo uses for back and sides imparts a flavor somewhere between Mahogany and Rosewood. The result is all the classic tone and playability of a pre-war Dread, with a slightly modern twist. The twelve-fret design places the bridge further back in the lower bout, sweetening the bass response and providing greater volume.

Leo Posch has a great reputation for building guitars that are inherently old souls. Somehow he can craft guitars today that you’d swear are 50-100 years old. This model CLG, 0 size guitar is a great example. Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce with no bindings, just a great smokey sunburst and lots of attitude. The instant we played this guitar we could hear the great old Gibson L-0 voice, only this one plays perfectly up the entire neck and has a straight neck and tuners that work perfectly. So you get the best of what’s vintage and none of the hassles. This is a killer blues or rag guitar, but of course it can do anything you put into it. Great little beast…

We played our first Posch last year and we immediately called Leo and invited him to send us guitars any time. He is a maker with a keen sense of how to capture the vintage lure of the best D-18 Martin has ever made. This guitar, like the last, sounds and feels like a 70 year old guitar even though it’s new. No small feat. The Cuban Mahogany body, which is the densest Mahogany, has a voice that is loud and powerful but also deep and rich. This one is a cannon that will clearly continue to grow into a monster guitar. This one is barely preowned, it’s owned by Leo Posch and comes with a full warranty.

Across America there are some great Luthiers that live under the radar. They focus on repair primarily but also build some truly fine instruments and their insight from the repair world informs their building in wonderful ways. Leo Posch is one of these great luthiers. Working in Kansas, Leo runs a very successful repair business and has a loyal following of players that clammer for the few guitars he builds. This D-18 is a cannon, absolutely one of the loudest and sweetest sounding Mahogany/Adirondack dreads you’ll find anywhere. We love it. The Adirondack is wide grained like some of the best old Martins and it beautifully constructed. Flatpickers and strummers alike will absolutely love this one and fingerstyle players will also since it has a 1 3/4″ nut.

I’m trying to build some guitars in the old tradition – hide glue, thin nitro finish, high quality woods, wide open sound. I have seen some fabulous guitars over the time I have spent repairing. The ones that always sound best to me are the Martins from the 1900s to the late 1930s and Gibsons from the 1920s to the early 1950s. So that’s the kind of look and sound I’m going after.Leo Posch
