2009 Don Wilson OM-28, Brazilian Rosewood/Red Spruce
We lost Don Wilson too soon. He leaves behind a loving family, both in blood and in guitars, and a wealth of time spent with Wayne Henderson at his shop. This 2009 28-style OM is a great example of his handiwork in person: classic 28 style, complete with Herringbone top trim and Abalone snowflakes & diamonds, as well as Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Red Spruce top. This beauty has been lovingly played in across the past decade and has opened up a ton as a result.

Wayne Henderson’s righthand man and talented luthier in his own right, Don Wilson has carved out a name for himself with gorgeous flattops and mandolins. We’ve got a special treat here: Don’s first shade top dread! This 2010 D.L. Wilson could win awards on the quality of its Brazilian Rosewood alone, but Don paired all that gorgeous grain with a shaded Adirondack Spruce top, Herringbone trim, and soft V neck for the complete package.
The bass response is characterized by a focused warmth; the mids and trebles play nicely with each other and flesh out the voice great note definition. This is a guitar which begs to be played, and is a challenge to put back down thanks to a slick setup and slim nut spacing.
Don Wilson manages to coax extra sweetness out of the trebles so as to keep the tone smooth and delicious. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal for a Brazilian Dreadnought of this calibre.

Don Wilson has been working in the shop of Wayne Henderson for some time. He builds just a few of his own guitars each year and this is the first we’ve seen. We are here to tell you it’s a fine guitar with serious tone and great vintage vibe. This is a D-18 with a beautiful Shaded Top, Fossil Ivory nut and saddle and sporting a set of gold Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons. This Wilson guitar has plenty of headroom and likes to be hit hard. The wide grain spruce top rings clear and the mahogany insures great projection. This is a wonderful bluegrass guitar.
