A premium example of German lutherie duo Blazer & Henkes--this 1999 Déjà-Vu Phoenix D-45 is as stunning to the ears as it is to the eyes. Straight grained and light-colored Brazilian Rosewood back and sides is set up with a tight-grained Alpine Spruce top; extensive 45-style Abalone appointments throughout--and a fantastically wide open and colorful voice. This instrument sings with every single note. The neck has just a touch more girth for that proper prewar hard V profile (feels great), and the setup is, frankly, perfect. Fine finish checking only adds to the impression that this is a prewar powerhouse.

Blazer & Henkes are revered for building some of the very best recreations of prewar guitars. All the way from their shop in Germany they seem to understand what made the great holy grail guitars tick, and somehow they have recreated it time and time again. Every one of their instruments I've ever played has been extremely energetic and alive, and that's what you find when you have the chance to play a 1930s Martin.
Oh, please don't make me put this one down. It's a hold onto your hat kind of guitar, this thing has heaps of headroom and a sweetly balanced response for a range of attacks and styles. Blazer & Henkes have perfected their craft.
