Description

Just when we thought our day couldn't get any better, this 2016 000-14BA came strolling through the door from PKT Guitars' workshop in Sisters, Oregon. It was something of a homecoming, too, since the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides came from our own private stash--and brother, was it good to see that straight-grained set return to us joined with a 45-style center strip. That's right: this 000-14BA is our first Dream Series guitar with Preston Thompson!

20 frets' worth of diamond-cut articulation and string-to-string balance, 4lbs. 2oz. of butter-rich tone, and one wickedly sunburst Adirondack Spruce top to make this a tall, dark, and handsome work of art. The rounded soft-V neck profile feels smooth as glass, and the finish is polished to a mirror shine to match the sparkle of the trebles. Individual notes have serious sustain, and the trebles in particular have a colorful bloom that swells after the initial attack. A powerhouse in standard, this PKT 000-14BA sounds absolutely ferocious in dropped tunings--Drop D was punchy and crisp, but DADGAD and DADF#AD were whole orders of magnitude rich and voluminous.

To say we're excited is an understatement: this guitar's voice and looks are in perfect harmony: individually impressive, but masterfully dovetailed as a whole.

I came across five or six matching sets of this Brazilian to be built into various Dream Series guitars. Each has had a similiar bell-like quality, and it's been fascinating to see how that manifests each time. With this 000-14BA it comes out across the board, but in particular with the trebles; there's a glassy band of overtones that swell after a moment. This guitar is delicious in every respect.

I'm somewhat prejudiced toward Preston Thompson guitars since I own one myself. He really knows how to achieve that "Golden Era" sound with his instruments. The woods used and the finishing recall the best of the best. This 000 has that tone and punch that you are looking for from a great 14-fret 000 and the standard scale length gives it the feel of a great OM as well. The vintage style sunburst tops it all off and with the addition of Brazilian Rosewood binding it has a touch of elegance that is quite nice. I would love to hear this one once it's had a few more hours of playing in it.
