Description

Master engraver and banjo builder Bob (RM) Anderson swung by the other day to drop off his two latest creations. This “Solar System” banjo is a special one. The inlays are various shells (Pearl, Gold Pearl, Abalone, Sea Snail) and silver wire, and they depict in painstaking detail planets, stars, the sun and the moon, and an astronaut floating up the fretboard from the fretless extension. Bob carved a fresh Curly Maple neck for this Whyte Laydie pot with a calf skin head, and installed Planetary-style Gotoh tuners and a fossilized Walrus Ivory nut for a classic effect. Bob’s dedication to the engraving arts is humbling: he built new tools just to be able to realize his design for this fretboard. Bob Anderson’s banjos are works of art equally for the eyes and the ears. This one comes wrapped up safe and sound in a Guardian hardshell case.

Robert Anderson pulled out all the stops on this banjo and utilized numerous materials and all of his techniques to create an amazing piece of art. We all dreamed of being an astronaut when we were young, if only for a moment, and here he captures the essence of that youthful admiration. Starting with the figure at the base of the neck and then showing many of the planets on the fingerboard this is an instrument but not only has a vintage Whyte Ladie pot and a modern neck built by Robert, but it has that magnetism that will pull you to the instrument so you will play more. That’s what a great instruments all about.
