2021 Macdonald “Steal This Book,” Honduran Mahogany/Figured Walnut
A first for us from the bench of James Macdonald, this guitar named “Steal This Book” is one of three in a series crafted by Macdonald, dedicated to counterculture literature. *Steal This Book* by Abbie Hoffman was an exemplification of the 1960s counterculture and quickly sold more than a quarter million copies. The number of books stolen is unknown. This book was quite influential for James Macdonald. In his own words:
“I first came across Abbie Hoffman’s offering in the paperback rack of my local library when I was a seventh grader in the early seventies. I flipped through the pages and saw some sort of instructions on how to make a Molotov Cocktail. As one who spent a lot of time as a kid setting off firecrackers, this looked like fun. I remember giving the library a quick once over and feeling the urge to do as Abbie said—steal the book! My better angels won out that day, and I left it behind. My marquetry tells a different story—*Steal This Book* in the act of being stolen. What a radical name for a book!”
This instrument features astounding marquetry work; the attention to detail here is quite staggering. The headstock veneer references yet another book, the anti-war classic *Johnny Got His Gun* by Dalton Trumbo. The body is Honduran mahogany, with a figured walnut top and a variety of woods making up the marquetry: maple, holly, satinwood, smoked eucalyptus, butternut, and Sitka spruce. Aesthetics aside, this guitar actually sounds incredible, offering classic Les Paul tones. The Sheptone Red Headed Stepchild humbuckers can sing soothingly or scream raucously.

2022 Goodall GC, Cocobolo Rosewood/Master Grade German Spruce
This James Goodall GC from 2022 has a lot going on. Ridiculously nice Cocobolo for the back and sides, paired with some mighty fine Master Grade German Spruce. This guitar has a lot of power, very robust treble strings, and is overall well-balanced. It can easily transition into fingerstyle, singer-songwriter vibes, or really just about anything you ask of it. An instrument of this quality clearly shows why James Goodall guitars are so popular in the guitar world.

1987 Monteleone Hot Club, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
From 1987 we have a John Monteleone Hotclub. This is one of those guitars that teaches you to never judge it by its appearance. This axe appears to do one thing, but in all actuality, it does most of the things, and it does them exceedingly well. As you will no doubt hear in our demo, this is a consummate jazz guitar. However, it really transcends any genre or styling. It’s complete, it’s complex, it’s surprising. Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Engelmann Spruce on top—and of course, a healthy dose of the alchemy of time. This guitar is just insanely good. Listen and look for yourself. WOW.

Not only is this instrument beautiful in sight and sound, but also in its construction, which is one of the more unique instruments we have seen in quite some time. Where to begin? Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Sitka Spruce for the top (this Sitka was cut in the 1970s; it’s been well-seasoned). As for the back and sides, this guitar features an active hollow core back, similar to a double top, carbon fiber bridge plate, U brace, elevated fingerboard, and a cylindrically arched top and back. 2003 Ryan Abbey Grand Parlor, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Kevin Ryan’s Abbey model takes the usual Parlor proportions and fills them out just enough to make it a Grand Parlor instead—domed back, 14 inches across the lower bout, and a 25 inch scale come together for warmth and power in equal measure. Add to that a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top, and the result is an even richer, enveloping little guitar. Fingerstyle is the name of the game; the setup is silky smooth for effortless playing. Kevin’s slim neck profile fits comfortably in the hand, and it’s easy to lose track of time playing this one. This beauty from 2003 has been very well maintained—hardly a mark on it—and comes wrapped in a Calton flight case for maximum safety.

This Klein M43 from 1997 offers a subtle glimpse into what Klein & Kauffman guitars are renowned for today. This variation features an offset soundhole, which creates an even more unique sonic soundscape with this instrument. Wielding it feels powerful; hearing it is moving, and looking at it encompasses both of those experiences. The Maple back and sides exhibit extreme chatoyance, reminiscent of looking into the bottom of a swimming pool in summer. The spruce top has aged just as finely in sound as it has in hue. Brand New TreeHouse Blue Ember, Maple/Adirondack Spruce
A first for us here at the shop from Zach Lefebvre, a brand new TreeHouse Blue Ember. It’s rare to find such unique instruments, where form certainly follows function so well. A whole lot of tone, and even more character. The back and sides’ hue harkens back to custom Stratocasters of the late 50s and early 60s, with an incredibly visually pleasing stain on top. The single coil tone combined with its acoustic resonance makes for an intriguing and fantastic musical experience. Maple for the back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top.
