2010 Greven 000-42, Brazilian Rosewood/Lutz Spruce
One of but five 000-42 models ever made by the one and only John Greven! And what a treat. John picked out a colorful set of Brazilian Rosewood for the body and paired that with Lutz Spruce on top, a dark blue-green 42-style trim package, and caps the headstock with an intricately inlaid and engraved torch. Not to mention the intricate tree of life across the fretboard. John set this beauty up with a 1 13/16” nut and very soft V neck, plus a short scale setup of 24.625” for a warm, round, easy-playing effect. Built in 2010, this lovely Greven 000-42 has opened up handsomely and is ready for more action.

To borrow an overused expression, this guitar is an inspiration. Leo Buendia is one of our all-time favorite builders, one who we’ve been very fortunate to work with for a number of years now–and no surprise, his instruments continue to humble and delight us every time. This is the first time we’ve had one of his slim 00 models, and we pray that it is not the last. Excellent dynamic range, gorgeously appointed, and outfitted with some of the finest materials on the scene. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with dramatic figuring and coloration, here paired with Swiss Moonspruce on top and a series of flawlessly executed chip carvings at the rosette, endgraft, and headplate. It’s a fearsome amount of work for just one of these carvings, let alone three. The entire instrument is finished in matte, and makes the grain of the wood pop. Additional features include custom Rodgers tuners with reconstituted malachite buttons, a first for us, offset position markers in Leo’s “stick” style, and even a Brazilian Rosewood bridge. This heirloom instrument was built in 2021, and is essentially new.

We’re excited and honored to have Ciaran McNally’s milestone 200th guitar here in the shop–complete with his new “Ancient Torc” motif at the rosette. Both the back and top come to us as salvaged materials, Ancient Bog Oak for the body and Ancient Blue Sitka, both wrapped up in a gloss finish that really sets off the mineralized quality of these sinker woods. Along the neck McNally opted for a satin texture that feels feather-smooth in hand. While this is a brand new guitar, the voice already has strong string energy and separation across the registers–and that’s at day one. Add a few years to the mix, and the voice will be even more awake, if that could be believed.

This was a fun collaboration between Paul Heumiller and Don Musser. They opted for Adirondack Spruce over Figured Mahogany and a slope shoulder body, with some extra tweaking to the bracing for additional balance and responsiveness. Half satin neck feels excellent in hand, and as a subtle nod to Dream Guitars, Don inlaid “Dream” at the headstock in our brand font.

Keisuke builds flawlessly with a modern eye for aesthetics, curve, and color. A master of the form. This Presentation OM features one of his incredibly detailed mosiac rosettes, carved bridge, plus the contoured and sculpted headstock–for tonewoods, Ancient Japanes Cedar on top with Ancient Keyaki back and sides. The neck is finished to be satin to the touch, with a soft V profile. The result is impossibly smooth, and oh so lovely in hand. The voice is characterized by sweetness and a blooming quality in the bass register; articulate midrange; trebles that linger. Excellent note to note balance.
We see so many incredible guitars come through our shop, but it’s only the rare handful that instantly make a lifelong impression at the first pluck of the strings. This Fujii Presentation OM is one such guitar.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, 2023153, fingerstyle, modern guitar, bam, evo fret

Gone before we could even list it! Jim Merrill packs a punch with this 2010 C-18 Dread. Mahogany and Adirondack, quick and punchy and lively, plays like so much butter–it’s like it’s living and breathing in your arms. Jim’s approach is to recreate the prewar ideals in modern form, and to that end we’ve got Adirondack Spruce on top, 18-style appointments, and a sub-four pounds playing weight. This cannon sings.

2016 Gaffney OM, Madagascar Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
It is a delight to have this incredibly articulate and expressive OM from Julian Gaffney in the shop today. Julian built this guitar well apprenticing with Ervin Somogyi in 2016, and picked out a dramatic set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides that pairs perfectly with Engelmann Spruce on top, plus segmented rosette, carved bridge, and florentine cutaway. The voice is huge and expansive, especially considering its slender OM proportions; this Gaffney has opened up handsomely since 2016.

A gorgeous example of an early 40s Martin, this 00-18 comes to us from 1942 specifically and is in excellent playing shape today in 2023. The Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce combo is a timeless classic for a reason–powerful and quick and clear–and with so many decades of opening up and drying out they’re even better. Slightly slim neck feel in hand, a few light marks making it feel like shaking hands with an old friend. It’s so lightweight it practically floats. It’s had all the necessary maintenance taken care of, with a recent neck reset and fret dress. Tuners, bridge, and pins have been replaced; finish has signs of typical play wear but appears original, as do the bridge plate and braces. Comes in a new Calton case that fits snug as a bug. All in all, a powerhouse in a petite package, energetic and fun–this 1942 Martin 00-18 is an American classic.

We’ve landed a powerhouse with this 2015 Placencia OM from Michael Bashkin in Cocobolo and German Spruce—from headstock to tailblock there’s miles of gorgeous real estate, and some rich tones hidden just beneath the surface. Bashkin paired his compass point rosette with amber side dots/position markers, and bound the body in elegant black Ebony for a subtle delineation between the creamy German Spruce and chocolate-rich Cocobolo.
Tonally, this Placencia has a crisp, focused bass response; tight and snappy, cuts well. Projection is impressive (and that’s not the soundport fooling our ears), and you can dig in a bit with a pick without topping out the sound. Try that on other OMs, we dare you. That said, this guitar is voiced primarily for fingerstyle, and we found it really slurped up dropped tunings. Built in 2015, this Bashkin looks nearly new: a great opportunity to get one for yourself to personalize with your own voice!

An early example of Leo Buendia’s prowess, this 2014 OMC has an expressive and colorful voice that grabs your attention right out the gate. Old Growth, Master Grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Adirondack Spruce top, Figured Koa bindings to set it off, plus Wenge appointments at the rosette and offset/wraparound position markers. A slim playing weight of under five pounds makes, plus glassy string feel and short scale 25″ setup, makes for an exercise in effortlessness with this Buendia in your hands. All wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case to keep things safe and sound on those rare moments you aren’t playing.

This 2016 Jang OM in Cocobolo and Italian Spruce has everything you need to better explore fingerstyle guitar. With a 25.4″ scale and 1 3/4″ nut over a C profile neck, this OM feels familiar at the first touch; playability isn’t a question of “how good is it,” but rather, “How can it be this good?” The Uchida-style cutaway and bevel make for easy fretting across the upper registers while striking a contemporary chord in the aesthetics department. Isaac must have an impressive stash of wood in his shop: the Cocobolo back and sides are darkly gorgeous, matched neatly by a creamy, tight-grained Italian Spruce top. We enjoyed playing this OM in standard, but boy did this Jang become a beast of another order once we dropped it down into DADGAD! The faint treble overtones swelled, the bass strings crisp but fat, the overall voice velvet-smooth. Response time is almost nil; by the time you put fingertip to string the guitar will already be singing loudly.

We lost Don Wilson too soon. He leaves behind a loving family, both in blood and in guitars, and a wealth of time spent with Wayne Henderson at his shop. This 2009 28-style OM is a great example of his handiwork in person: classic 28 style, complete with Herringbone top trim and Abalone snowflakes & diamonds, as well as Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Red Spruce top.
