2012 Kim Walker OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Kim Walker continues to be one of the most sought after modern makers. And why? Because each and every guitar of his contains a heaping spoonful of power, balance, clarity, and dynamic range. This 2012 OM, dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce plus Curly Maple bindings, has all of that in spades. The high end has a rich, expressive quality that enriches the whole voice, and the bass is crisp, expansive, but perfectly balanced against the warmth of the midrange. In short, a perfect fingerstyle instrument. With a 25.4″ scale and Adi top, this Walker also has the headroom for flatpicking ands trumming work as well. The Brazilian Rosewood comes from a select stash that Kim acquired from Martin in the early 1970s, making this Walker even more desirable.

Such a delight to see this one in the shop. This is one of Martin’s most coveted signature series, the 1999 D-45SS Stephen Stills, and we’ve landed number 86 of 91 of that most exclusive run. Each of these was built with figured Brazilian Rosewood and Alpine Spruce on top, plus perfectly executed 45-style appointments and a MOP Southern Cross inlaid into the guard in homage to CSN. This particular beauty has the snowflakes & diamonds fretboard spread as well. Tonally, this is a distinctive, expressive, exquisitely musical Dreadnought. It’s sensitive enough for fingerpicking, and also has enough headroom for aggressive strumming without breaking up.

A piece 45 heaven from the master himself. Here we’ve landed a lifetime OM from Mr. T.J. Thompson, dressed to the nines with 45-style treatment throughout and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides plus Adirondack Spruce top. What more need be said? T.J. is centered in the traditional Martin style of building, with this 2007 OM-45 playing and feeling right at home alongside the prewar originals. Bar frets, V neck, gorgeous dark Abalone throughout–and a touch of modernity with a Schertler pickup system. With an upgraded Karura flight case, this T.J. Thompson OM-45 is safe and sound when not in use. But let’s be honest: this is one guitar that’s begging to be played, and who are we to say no?

The goods keep on coming! We originally spec’d out this Buendia 000 in 2018 with Brazilian Rosewood, Swiss Alpine Moonspruce, Brazilian bridge, Honduran Mahogany neck, 12-fret board and Florentine Cutaway. That’s only scratching the surface. Leo’s touch makes for incredibly dynamic and resonant guitars, and this one packs in incredible amount of clarity, depth, and power into an effortless-playing 000 package. Calling it impressive would be an understatement. Excellent note separation, and buttery riches from string to string. Fingerstyle heaven, much?

Sweetness paired with power, and articulate across the registers. This 2008 Solace Select from the late Tom Doerr sings in your hands at a light touch, but has plenty of headroom to dig into as well; the 16 1/4″ lower bout Cedar top and actively-braced Madagascar Rosewood back can attest to that. To keep a guitar of this size effortless to play, Tom outfitted it with not only a cutaway and wraparound arm bevel, but also introduced a subtle body wedge into the build to keep the bass side a touch slimmer, and therefore easier to get your right arm around. This Doerr plays handsomely, indeed. The multi-laminated neck is stable and slender in-hand, and transforms into a gorgeous routed out channel at the back of the headstock and at the heelcap. That, combined with the glassy fit and finish elsewhere, paints the picture of a well-dressed modern flattop that’s ready for just about anything. In 2017, Tom retopped this Solace with the current Cedar top and his latest bracing designs. So it’s got that openness that only comes with being played for years, plus the lively and quick response of a newer build. A Cedar Creek case keeps it safe when (rarely) not in use, and a Schatten pickup to boot.

Pure velvet. A Kevin Ryan is always glassy, but this 2019 Nightingale Soloist takes that to a new level with its combination of Sinker Redwood and Brazilian Rosewood. Very rich and expressive, with an added blooming quality in the bass response that’s particularly sweet to experience. Kevin’s 25.7″ scale keeps the voice crisp and defined as well, and enables you to tune down into DADGAD or beyond without loss of projection and definition. Being one of his rare Signature Series guitars, this Nightingale is dressed for the red carpet with art deco appointments, an arm bevel & acoustic flutes, titanium bridge pins, and silk-smooth setup.

Alive, powerful, and boasting a meaty midrange. This Crescendo from Bill Tippin has opened up oh so much since 2006. Stiff Carpathian Spruce makes for a treble response that immediately cuts through the mix, and paired with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides the voice has a velvety quality which bring the word heft to mind. Gorgeous tonewoods here, and Bill further upgraded this build with BRW bridge and Flame Koa bindings, Waverly tuners, and a tasteful pointed inlay at the headstock terminus of the fretboard. A K&K Mini pickup carries all of that right onto the stage, and a previous owner installed a strap button at the heel so you can strap right up into it as well. Bill’s Crescendo is something of a souped up OM, packing more power and push. Ready for a guitar experience to get your heart racing?

Leo Buendia approaches the classical guitar form with an eye for modern aesthetics, ergonomic design, and a sensitive voicing. This 2019 Nylon model boasts dark, dark Brazilian Rosewood back and sides plus tight-grained Red Cedar on top, and has further been appointed with one of his painstaking carved rosettes (plus endgraft), and green-dyed tieblock tying in with the headstock inlays. Leo has put a fearsome amount of time and effort into making every single chip and carve count; the result is intricate, and impressively clean. Rather than opt for a traditional fingerboard, Leo has adopted a subtle radius for his Nylon model, making the playing experience effortless indeed. Build weight comes in a little over four pounds, making this Buendia quite comfortable in hand. Of course, Rodgers tuners in the Hauser style and a carved Brazilian Rosewood bridge are the final additions to this study in elegance, and a french polish finish throughout.

Australian luthier Ashley Sanders crafts an incredible guitar, hands down. This Classical is relatively new from 2018, but has an impressively opened up voice and responsiveness. Ziricote back and sides with a lattice braced Cedar top, Rubner deluxe tuners and Snakewood buttons—and this Australian-style Classical only weighs in at five pounds. The Ziricote back is slightly arched à la Greg Smallman, adding volume and power to the voice. 12-hole tieblock for increased break angle at the saddle, and Sanders added side dots at the 5th and 7th fret for creature comfort.

2015 Wilborn Parlor, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
So much sweetness and power, packed into a slender package. Ben Wilborn makes a modern parlor guitar to compete with its bigger brethren—and this one is up to the task. Enlarged soundhole plus soundport add to the liveliness and projection, while the Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce combo fills the entire voice with easy richness and clarity. Trebles have a particularly sweet and shimmering quality that draws you in. The Braz is gorgeous stuff, ruddy and with some dramatic figuring, while the Sitka is heirloom stock harvested in the mid 1900s. Elsewhere this beauty is dressed for a night on the town with Leopardwood bindings and rosette, plus dark Abalone purflings throughout. Rosewood bridge and fretboard, headplate; really, this 2015 Wilborn Parlor looks as good as it sounds.

Take the legendary California Guitar Trio, pair them with Ervin Somogyi, and the results are stunning. Hideyo Moriya of CGT worked with Ervin in 1996 to build this Thin Modified Dreadnought as the ultimate performing guitar, rigged out with a 26-25.125” multiscale fretboard, florentine cutaway, and a thin body design that was further enhanced with a Manzer-style body wedge. The result is a featherweight Somogyi that is equally at home for picks, fingertips, standard tuning, NST, DADGAD, you name it. Straight-grain Indian Rosewood body pairs with European Spruce top and one of Ervin’s famous segmented rosette. Recently, Hideyo had Ray Kraut (appropriate as one of Ervin’s former apprentices) refinish this beauty and remove the original pickup system, making it all acoustic. Hideyo put so much time into this guitar, a refinish was very due! Now it looks gorgeous and ready for more action. Additionally, Ray also converted the previous pickup’s side-mounted preamp into a squared up soundport, giving the player a little more “me in the monitor.” Wrapped up in the original Calton case, itself very familiar with the road but in perfect working order, this 1996 Somogyi Thin Modified Dreadnought is safe and sound. Interested? Give us a shout!

Santa Cruz’s Vintage Southerner is quick, lively, and oh so fun to play. Richard Hoover and co take inspiration from the Gibson J-45, the Epiphone Texan, as well as their own VA model, for this slope shoulder powerhouse. Mahogany back and sides are here upgraded with Adirondack Spruce on top and hide glue construction, plus Adirondack brace stock. A tasty sunburst, rectangular bridge, and Ivoroid bindings make for a classic aesthetic. The setup is easy on the hands with a 24 3/4” scale and 1 11/16” nut, plus this one has had a strap button installed at the heel so you can strap up into it and maintain good posture. This SCGC VS comes to us from 2019 and is in excellent playing shape, ready for more action.

A heavenly host indeed. This is Otto D’Ambrosio’s full-size, 18” archtop, the Angel City, here rendered with pale Alpine Spruce over Italian Maple, plus Flame Maple bindings and appointments throughout. Otto’s been in the lutherie business since he was a teenager, working at the fabled Mandolin Brothers repair shop. Later with Flip Scipio and even John Monteleone, and even later with Guild, Otto has had his hands on hundreds of instruments, which experience has informed his present day builds. In this Angel City we can definitely see the influence of Monteleone at the soundholes and headstock, for instance. Across the board, this instrument is exquisitely crafted for an effortless playing experience—a 18” archtop which doesn’t feel like a 18” archtop in your hands. Otto has included an Armstrong pickup integrated into the Maple pickguard, but you’ll find the volume and tone knobs are integrated lower down, into the chrome tailpiece itself. This allows the right hand to very easily reach the knobs without having to stretch your arm further out and across the guitar.
This is the kind of instrument that checks all the boxes: flawless execution, playability, and elegance.Other keywords: duane simpson, fingerstyle, jazz box, arch top, 02213, gotoh

A quick, lively, expressive Classical from Italian luthier Luciano Lovadina—Flame Maple with Italian Spruce, 650mm scale, Alessi tuners, the works. The lightweight build from 2016 makes for a very comfortable playing experience, in part from the Maple body which also enhances the crisp projection. Lovadina has built guitars for a number of world class musicians, including Fareed Haque, Oscar Ghiglia, Frank Bungarten, and Carlos Bonell. We love the tight flamed Mahogany neck; the figuring really pops and pairs up nicely with the Maple body. Offset throughout by Rosewood bindings and a Rosewood bridge with six-hole tieback. Lovadina’s mosaic rosette is simply gorgeous, intricately spiraling out from the soundhole, and is set off perfectly by the high gloss finish.
