2020 Matsuda M1, Brazilian Rosewood/Italian Spruce
Now here’s something to lose track of time with. Michi manages to make every one of his guitars a unique experience, acoustically as well as visually and ergonomically. Fine art meets function in the guitar form. This 2021 Matsuda M1 is a force of nature. Brazilian Rosewood body with Italian Spruce top, an expansive voice that mixes up smoothly across the registers and has a capacious midrange that fills out big chords. Played hard, soft, fingers or picks, this Matsuda is equally at home in each scenario. The trebles also have a liquid, glassy quality that transforms into sweet overtones when you let notes linger. Aesthetically, the fretboard and headstock are dressed up with a custom Larry Robinson koi fish inlay scheme to set off the spalted rosette and top appointments. Florentine cutaway, plus a carved heel that allows the left hand to synch up more closely to the fingerboard, and a smoothly contoured C profile neck, make for an effortless playing experience. Scale length is 25.25”, a sweet spot between short and long scales that works well in a range of tunings. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime guitar, look no further.

2020 Olson JT Clone, Brazilian Rosewood/Cedar
Lean in a bit, cuz this one’s got lots of headroom. And how could it not? It’s a James Taylor Olson Clone from 2020, after all. Heirloom-grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (also at the rosette and bindings), Cedar top, Abalone treatment throughout plus doves along the fretboard. A truly gorgeous guitar. Tonally, we’re impressed by how well this responds to a harder attack, given its Cedar top, but as we said this is one Olson that you can really lean into. Strong, glassy, exquisite balance across the strings. Everything we’ve come to expect from an Olson, but this one goes all the way to eleven. Jim’s fit and finish is flawless throughout, and the SJ is finished in high gloss to make these tonewoods leap out at you. Slinky setup too, icing on the cake.

2020 Traugott R, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
The fruits are sweet, indeed. The latest Model R from Jeff Traugott to grace our shop comes to us from 2020, and is already wide awake. Jeff’s classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce is used here to great effect: exquisite clarity across the registers, glassy trebles, and a strong fundamental throughout. The voice is dialed in for maximum clarity, making this a great candidate for fingerstyle play. That said, this Model R also holds up well under a flatpick. It’s the sort of guitar that makes every note count. Jeff’s aesthetic lets the quality of the woods speak for themselves—and what a story this dramatically colored Brazilian Rosewood tells—with only Abalone to tastefully ring in the rosette. The fretboard and bridge are also upgraded with Brazilian Rosewood to make the German Spruce top pop. All wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case for the best protection money can buy, short of a security detail.

2011 Santa Cruz F, Brazilian Rosewood/Bearclaw Italian Spruce
Cream of the crop, with sweet froth on top and a caramel center—our 2011 Santa Cruz F is a delight for hands, eyes, and ears. We love the balance between bass and treble registers, and the lively, energetic quality that comes out under a flatpick; and the unwound strings cut quickly and smoothly through the mix. The bass register is warm and present, but plays nicely with the mids and top end, making it a powerful fingerstyle guitar (we tested it in DADGAD and C9, purely for science. It’s wide awake and very expressive down there). On the tonewoods front, we’ve got the tip top of the top shelf here: 90-year-old Bearclaw Italian Spruce on top, old growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (harvested in 1930; their oldest and best). All bound in Flamed Koa with gold Gotoh Delta tuners to set it off. Adirondack braced top, hide glue construction throughout.

Brand New American Archtop Ram, Flame Maple/European Spruce
The result of masters from two fields in collaboration: luthiers Dale & Tyler Unger and hyperrealist painter Peter Maier. The Ram is a particular brand of unique—17 inch archtop whose Maple back is adorned with a hyper realistic ram from Maier. On top, a gold motif continues along the center seam and with the trapeze tailpiece and hardware, plus gold Gotoh mini tuners. The headstock boasts a tightly figured Koa headplate, and from there you’ll find a series of vibrant Abalone position markers along the fretboard. On the electronics front, Unger outfitted the Ram with a Kent Armstrong floating humbucker plus volume and tone at the pickguard (itself featuring a single band of gold that arcs diagonally across). Top is AAAA European Spruce, paired with AAAA European Maple for the back and sides. Flame Maple neck, set off with the Ebony fingerboard, completes the portrait. Here’s Maier: “The Ram guitar was inspired by my time at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, where skulls of animals were dominant in many business locations—however I worked gold leaf onto the horns with an engine turned finish to give it more of a costly & valued appearance.”

2006 Bresnan OM, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
A fantastic example of Dan Bresnan’s fine lutherie in action! This is one of Dan’s OMs from 2006, here in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce, that’s ready to keep playing. Dan employed one of his mosaic rosettes to up the visual ante, and elsewhere adopted an understated aesthetic that lets the various woods shine. Alessi tuners, Ameritage case, and a frankly effortless playability make this a great guitar for fingerstyle. The voice is first and foremost well balanced, letting complex chords ring out properly, and we especially like how that clarity and balance is maintained up the neck.

2022 Mervyn Davis SmoothTalker OM African Kiaat/Swiss Spruce
Mervyn Davis offers all the playability of electric, but in an acoustic package that packs a punch. This is his newly redesigned SmoothTalker OM model, featuring African Kiaat body and a Swiss Spruce top. The body of the instrument is essentially a clamshell that can be easily disassembled, has an adjustable neck angle to keep the setup precisely where you want it, and comes with an L.R. Baggs Element pickup system installed to carry you into amplified territory with plug-n-play ease; note the volume knob integrated into the bass side lower bout. These SmoothTalkers have a very quick and woody attack, and play like grass fed butter.

2019 Stötzel Small Jumbo, Wenge/Italian Spruce
Our latest beauty from Germany’s Wilm Stötzel is just that: gorgeous from tuners to tail, with a voice to match. Here we find Wilm’s Small Jumbo model decked out with Wenge back and sides and an Italian Spruce top, 25.5” scale for a touch added power and projection, and gorgeous geometric motifs at the rosette and headstock veneer. This instrument excels for fingerstyle playing, and has the right amount of depth and clarity to work wonders with a flatpick as well. Naturally, we had a blast with the Stötzel tuned to DADGAD.

Brand New American Archtop Versailles, Flame Maple/European Spruce
A stunning collaboration between father-and-son duo Dale & Tyler Unger and hyperrealist painter Peter Maier. The Versailles is based on the Ungers’ Elite model, here paired with Maier’s inspiration from Wagner dance music in a panoply of vibrant, metallic hues. The 14.5” lower bout and slim build weight make for an easy playing experience; plus a Lollar P90 with tortoise cover for a lively amplified tone that threads the needle between rich and punchy.

2008 Beauregard MB, Maple/Spruce
Racecar curves, glassy setup, and butter-rich depths—the Beauregard MB is in a class of its own. Flame Maple body with Spruce top, Armstrong humbucker, and tasty Koa appointments throughout. The über curvy sides make for an incredibly comfortable playing experience, all while looking very attractive. A carved bridge and tailpiece complete the portrait. This gorgeous model MB comes to us from 2008, and is oh so ready for more action.

2004 Taylor XXX-BE, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
To honor Bob’s 30th anniversary building guitars under the Taylor name, a limited number of premium XXX guitars were built. We’ve got number 8 of 150 here, an exquisite Grand Concert in Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce that’s topped off with commemorative inlays across the fretboard extension and a slotted headstock on a 14-fret neck. Since 2004, this Taylor has been well-cared for with hardly a mark on her mirror-sheen body.
We were delighted to find an added layer of definition and sustain in the bass register which paired well with the smooth and crisp top end. Since it’s such an excellent fingerstyle guitar, we put it through its paces in a few open tunings, and found Taylor’s trademark playability to shine through in each. The body and rosette are trimmed out in dark Abalone, and the neck has a neck with a crushed velvet-like feel that remains smooth to the touch even after our hands warmed up, as can happen with a glossy neck. It’s a wonder this Taylor XXX-BE has been so well preserved, and we’re proud to offer it in such fine condition.

2019 Jang OM Multiscale, Amazon Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
The fruits are sweet, borne from this 2019 Jang OM Multiscale. Amazon Rosewood back and sides with a pale Adirondack Spruce top, Brazilian Rosewood bindings and rosette, for starters. This beauty features Jang’s Uchida-inspired “Bendaway” cutaway, a subtle body wedge, and multiscale fretboard with a 26.25-25” spread. This is a fabulous fingerstyle instrument that really soaks up DADGAD, and plays like hot melted butter. Flawless, glossy nitro finish throughout, Gotoh 510 HAPA tuners, and a K&K Trinity pickup system.

1969 Martin D-45, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
The cream of the crop comes dressed to the nines (and 36 more) with this rare 1969 Martin D-45. The last year for Brazilian Rosewood increases the collectability—and of course the tone—and with a recent neck reset and setup by our repair staff this 60-year-old Martin plays like so much grass fed butter. Sitka Spruce on top with light play wear; MOP hexagonal position markers; original gold Grover tuners. This beauty has aged handsomely and overall has been well cared for, and will be the centerpiece of your collection. Brazilian Rosewood, intricate 45-style appointments, and the sweets that come with time—this 1969 D-45 is our kind of vintage dream.
