2007 Beneteau Nick Lucas Mahogany/Adirondack
Marc Beneteau’s Nick Lucas design is very popular. It harkens back to the 1920s and 30s Gibson model who’s namesake was a famous player of the day. One key part of the design is the 13 Fret neck joint that keeps the bridge in the wider portion of the lower bout but allows that one more fret to play in. This sunburst beauty is Adirondack over Mahogany with a short 24.9″ scale, lovely Maple bindings and a Spalted Maple rosette. The one modern touch, its side soundport, is a welcome upgrade that sounds great in the driver’s seat. The beauty you see is equalled by what you hear. This is a very strong and proud small body guitar with volume and energy to spare. Blues, Rag and Old Time player will flip over this one.

We are delighted to present to our customers the worldclass guitars of Thomas Rodriguez. What better way to announce his arrival then to offer you his 100th Concert guitar crafted completely from woods that are at least 40 years old, all hand split by the builder. The quality of the aged woods and the unique top bracing, which incorporates fan braces with lateral braces, give this instrument one of the strongest, most musical voices you’ll find. It will certainly fill a hall and do so with sweet, lyrical notes that dance upon the ears. The combination of power and tone reminds us of other fine luthiers such as Tacchi, Fischer and Ruck. From the builder: The woods used in the 100th guitar are as follows; The top is 80 to 100 year old western red cedar from an exterior column from an old house here in Richmond. The back, sides, peg head veneer, bridge and fingerboard are 50 plus year old brazilian rosewood. All cut from the same tree to assure a good color match. The rosette binding and purflings are made up of maple and mahogany from a 1930’s piano. The dark lines are old brazilian rosewood. The mahogany in the back strip is from the 1840’s salvaged from an old house in Richmond. The neck, back braces and heel block are mahogany from the early 60’s all from the same billet. The top braces are from a billet cut down by a friend at the source in 1970. The linings are basswood salvaged from a hair salon opened in the 1950’s. The nut, saddle neck dot and tie block are 30,000 year old mastodon ivory purchased from the Duke of Pearl. The pearl inlays on the bridge are ground down from an old pearl belt that came from Bora Bora during WWII. In putting the guitar together I took the time to hand split all of the wood for the top, neck and braces. This assures the straightest an stiffest grain in critical areas. – Thomas Rodriguez

We were recently in Italy where Jackson Browne performed and from the stage he spoke of how much he loved Roy McAlister’s guitars and we could not agree more. Roy achieves a responsiveness and energy that few makers have found. His voice is a blend of tradition and modern, with chimey top end and clarity to spare. David Crosby also calls his McAlister guitar his “favorite guitar”. Both Jackson and David play with fingers and also strum, evidence of the versatility of McAlister guitars as well. This McAlister Concert is a David Crosby Signature Model and is crafted from top notch Brazilian Rosewood paired with Adirondack for maximum tone. This is a hghly limited edition McAlister guitar, with all the best ingredients.

This is an extremely rare find in vintage Nationals. Here we have a 1930 National Triolian (the first year of production) in Walnut finish but we discovered underneath it is a Style O Brass body! According to Don Young at National Resophonic, during the depression nothing was wasted, so if the engraving in a Style O had a flaw they would paint it and sell it as a Triolian. Very few of these probably exist in the world and it gives this one a great story. The last owner had master Luthier Bill Tippin go over the entire guitar and lovingly bring it up to date with regards to playability and reliability. There is $1500 of repair work in this guitar. The neck was reset and refretted, a new cone was installed to increase the tone and a Highlander Biscuit pickup added for live use. Lastly it has a new National case so this one is completely hassle free, you get all the vintage tone but with modern playability and stability. So here’s a chance for a very rare, Brass Body Triolian with no issues.
