From 2020, this special edition Martin D-42 ‘Purple’ is #25 of 100. Made of Flamed Myrtle and Engelmann Spruce, this guitar stands out in the C.F. Martin lineup, not only because of the unique wood combination but also because of the ornamentation of this instrument. Abalone Purple Martin birds alongside abalone Mountain Laurel flowers make this instrument quite a sight to behold. As well as being visually striking, the sound isn’t quite what one expects from a Martin Dreadnought—sweet, round, and full. This guitar can be played lightly and still have power and depth.

1938 Martin D-28, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Ah, to have the real deal in your hands. This piece of Martin history strikes hard, and strikes true, with every note. Huge voice, powerful but precise, with more gears under the hood than you can shake a fist full of picks at. Our 1938 Martin D-28 is the epitome of the herrringbone dread. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with hints of mill marks, and a forward-shifted Adirondack Spruce top that has all of the dried out and woke up qualities we expect from an 85-year-old top. This beauty has been played in extensively and is firing on all cylinders, and our repair staff have gone over it extensively for a clean bill of health. If you’re up to the challenge, this ’38 D-28 prewar powerhouse is ready to go.

This guitar has a little over a decade of playtime under its belt at the time of publishing, and man oh man you can hear it. If you want a killer fingerstyle small body that won’t break the bank, this is for you. Not to mention it was spec’d out by George Gruhn himself!

2005 Greenfield G4, Highly Figured AAA Koa/Figured Adirondack Spruce
An earlier build from the bench of Michael Greenfield, this G4 ‘Jumbo’ from 2005 has lots of everything. Being newer, it features a soundport and Laskin-style armrest, dressed in gorgeously figured Adirondack Spruce and highly figured Koa. Equipped with a Seymour Duncan Magnetic soundhole pickup and D-Tar undersaddle pickup (stereo out), this guitar is ready for anything. Played well and exceptionally taken care of, this guitar is a great way to get into the Greenfield family. Tone, comfort, and collectability all come together in one compelling package.

2011 Collings OM1A Deep Body, Honduran Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
When an artist of the ilk of Julian Lage chooses a Collings OM as his main acoustic axe, this says a lot. This OM1A from 2011 says a lot, too. High-quality Honduran Mahogany and Adirondack spruce make up the DNA of this beastly instrument. It has a deep body as well, which no doubt contributes to the power of this OM. Flatpicking? Check. R.E. Bruné makes guitars that are highly sought after. As a master of building and restoration, his wealth of knowledge and understanding of the instrument is proven in spades with the Concert Classical from 2019. Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides, Cedar on top. This guitar is a powerhouse, with loads of headroom. The ultimate experience for the expressive and discerning guitarist. From 2019, this very custom Froggy Bottom H-12 Limited, decked out in some incredible Koa, is guaranteed to provide a good time.
