2011 Osthoff Woodstock OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Sinker Redwood
For the 2011 Woodstock Luthier Showcase, John Osthoff decided to pull out all the stops, or carbs in the case of this cannabis inlaid OM. Suited up to impress with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a Sinker Redwood top, and this dark, moody visual matches perfectly the warmth and richness of the voice. Evo frets for longevity, an easy setup for fingerstyle, and a curvy C profile neck that feels great in hand. Snakewood bindings and a Spalted Maple rosette set off the cannabis inlay package at the bridge and fretboard, and Cosmo Black Gotoh 510 Delta tuners do the same at the headstock.

2019 Moore Bettah Tenor Ukulele, Milo/Bearclaw Spruce
Here’s a sweet little crooner from Chuck Moore of Moore Bettah Ukuleles that’s ready for more! Built recently in 2019, this Tenor is in great shape and has a lovely rope-style trim package for an cool, old school vibe. Combined with a slotted headstock arrangement and Bearclaw Spruce top plus Milo body.
2019 Greenfield GF, Wenge/Moonspruce
Quick, crisp, expressive, and energetic. These are the first words that come to mind the moment after the first notes fade away, which admittingly is a loooong moment. This 2019 GF model from Michael Greenfield is outfitted with Wenge back and sides and Moonspruce on top, plus his glassy setup and play feel and a florentine cutaway. Fit and finish is flawless throughout, and gold Gotoh tuners at the headstock pair up with a spalted rosette and Ebony bindings for a gorgeous look. To our ears, the Wenge body lends an evenness and clarity to the voice that the Moonspruce amplifies, giving the guitar smooth depth and lively dynamic range. Well cared for, this 2019 GF is in great playing shape; oh so ready for more action.

2011 McPherson 4.0 Camrielle, Madagascar Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
McPherson’s third ever Camrielle model—and this beauty sings. The slimmer proportions of this 2011 CMG 4.0 makes for added punch and clarity; bundle that into the richness and colorful response of Engelmann Spruce over Madagascar Rosewood—the result is smooth, rich definition from bottom to top. Curly Maple bindings set off the Rosewood-Spruce, and also ring in the offset McPherson soundhole for flair. The Rosewood bridge lines up perfectly with the Rosewood fingerboard and headplate veneer, itself capped with the McPherson logo and gold Waverly tuners. The V neck, with a 25.5” scale and 1 3/4” nut, plays very easily—and we had a blast tuning this one down to DADGAD. It even held up well in C#. Plug in with the L.R. Baggs Element pickup system for all of that in an amplified setting.

2016 Brondel A-2, Madagascar Rosewood/German Spruce
Such a sweet voice! This 2016 Brondel A-2 has it all: silky setup, smooth response and crisp projection, and an accurate, defined voice that remains so even when we tested it in C9 waters. Upgraded with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides plus German Spruce on top and burl appointments at the headstock, rosette, and heelcap. Laurent lets the quality of the woods speak for themselves with an overall understated appointment aesthetic, crowned by delicate crow’s feet trim along the top and Waverly tuners with black pearl knobs. We found this A-2 was equally at home with fingerstyle play as with flatpicking, offering up clarity and consistency across all the registers. With a 25” scale and 1 3/4” nut plus C-shaped neck, this Brondel plays very easily, indeed. All wrapped up in a custom Hoffee case!

Brand New Wilborn Nautilus, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
This is another incredible example of Ben Wilborn’s not inconsiderable gifts to the world of modern lutherie. His Nautilus model, part of the new Comma Series, features an offset soundhole, twin bevels for creature comfort, a multiscale setup with 25.5” on the bottom and 25” on top—and this custom build has be(e)n upgraded to the max with chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood for the body, master grade Adirondack Spruce on top, and a K&K Pure Mini pick with vintage 1/8” output jack. Hands down, this guitar kills.

2007 Victor Baker 16″ Archtop #200, Flamed Maple/Sitka Spruce
Number 200 is a milestone, indeed, so why not celebrate it? Enter: Victor Baker’s archtop #200. Pulling out all the stops in 2007, baker carved 25-year-old Sitka Spruce for the top, pairing with tightly flamed Maple for the back and sides, as well as neck and bindings. The number 200 is inlaid at the top and back, and the fretboard is stamped no.200 at the bottom corner of the extension. Floating Kent Armstrong humbucker with volume and tone knobs, Ebony tailpiece reinforced with brass, and gold Gotoh tuners at the headstock. This 16” archtop weighs in at a little over six pounds, and plays very smoothly with a quick and lively response. The Armstrong bucker is rich and fat for plugging in, but this one holds its own when played acoustically as well.

Brand New Borghino Shakti Deluxe, Ziricote/Alpine Spruce
A work of art in quite its own category, and one which engages with the player and audience to create new sonic experience—the Borghino Shakti Deluxe. Designed in collaboration with John McLaughlin, this instrument couples a Jumbo flattop body with a fast neck and seven sympathetic strings strung diagonally across the soundhole. The fretboard is scalloped and set up with light strings to facilitate frictionless runs and added latitude for bending vertically and horizontally.
The sympathetic strings are also also to be strummed, or plucked depending on your attack and use of fingers or picks, in addition to serving to add sympathetic resonance. This latter effect leads to an intensely enveloping voice that is quite honestly a thing unto itself.
Borghino has installed a Barbera Soloist pickup system for both sets of strings to best capture the complexity of the Shakti sound (including several audiophile reference cables for maximum fidelity), and added dramatic arm & rib bevels to the body for added comfort when playing. Additionally, the body has been built with a subtle Manzer Wedge, meaning the bass side is narrower than the treble side, pivoting the top back towards the player and allowing for easier right arm access. Tightly figured Ziricote back and sides pair with Bearclaw Italian Spruce on top, extensive Abalone appointments, and a custom case to house this feat of lutherie.

Brand New Galloup G.2c, Brazilian Rosewood/Italian Spruce
Brand New and already oh so awake. Our latest G.2c from Bryan Galloup is phenomenal, and dressed to prove it. Brazilian Rosewood body with Italian Spruce on top, 25.5” scale, and some tasty appointments with interrupted profilings and geometric motifs. Playability is glass smooth, as is the voice. The top end has a lovely bell quality and some insane overtones; this Galloup has a rare quality of natural reverb that fills the room. It’s frankly haunting. Equally at home with Standard tuning as it is with DADGAD, or even C9.

1997 Ruck Classical, Indian Rosewood/Spruce
A sweet slice of tone from one of our great masters of the classical guitar. This 1997 Classical from Robert Ruck has opened up handsomely in the intervening years, has a sumptuously articulate and expressive bass register, plus a touch of sparkle in the top end and great string energy throughout. This Ruck threads the needle perfectly between lively and powerful: a mixture of great clarity and note definition with added heft and presence. Such a delight to play. Condition wise, this beauty born in 97 has been lovingly cared for and is in fantastic playing shape. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top.

Brand new! Raring to go! Here’s a chance to land yourself a slice of the sweetest blueberry pie you’re likely to find. Tad Brown of California’s CC Blue is simply fabulous. Red Spruce top, Red Maple body, plus a CC Pickups ES250 Charlie Christian pickup and cobalt array, pale Maple bindings with an extra bevelled edge (and a subtle arm bevel introduced into the bindings and top itself at the lower bout); Rosewood appointments throughout; a slim build weight and 1 3/4” nut. The acoustic voice has heaps of projection, and a sweet clarity across the registers. Amplified, this Tad Brown becomes a force of nature, refined.

Here we have an exquisite example of Tyler Robbins’ formidable lutherie chops—this R.1ca is dressed to the nines with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Italian Spruce on top, and a one-of-a-kind appointment package with pearlescent resin inlays crossing from the headstock onto the fretboard, ringing in the soundhole, and setting off the Maddie back and sides with an interrupted backstrip.
