1995 Humphrey Millennium Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce
Here we’ve landed a great example of Thomas Humphrey’s Millenium design from 1995, rigged up with Brazilian Rosewood under Spruce, a 650mm scale, and 51mm nut. At the soundhole we have a flower mosaic rosette which offers some color, pairing nicely with the warmly aged surrounding Spruce. A full neck profile with a slight C shape, terminating at the body with the elevated fingerboard extension design ubiquitous to the Millenium. This beauty has been lovingly played in since 1995 and has the marks to prove it, and for us this helps explain the wide open, powerful voice—you only sound this good when you’ve had a lot of music pass through your strings.

2013 Petros T-13 Gold Standard, Claro Walnut/Tunnel 13 Redwood
We’ve got another Tunnel 13 Gold Standard from Bruce and Matt Petros in the house! Number 22 in the series, this 2013 Petros GC has a sweet voice wrapped up in a gorgeous Walnut-and-Redwood package with Pearwood trim throughout. As you probably already know, the Redwood that Bruce and Matt have acquired for these guitars came from the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Siskiyou Summit Tunnel #13, where they were originally railroad ties. With the characteristic warmth and balance of Redwood, plus the dry crackle of the Claro Walnut back and sides, this Tunnel 13 has a splendid, well-balanced voice with articulate lows and mids, making big chords sound rich and full with each string ringing clearly.
For both fingerstyle and flatpicking, the Gold Standard is comfortable and responsive–and the wider nut makes those big chords a cakewalk. Wrapped up in a Hoffee carbon fiber flight case, this powerhouse from Petros Guitars is your next favorite instrument.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, bruce petros, fingerpicking, butternut, tunnel 13 redwood, gotoh

1969 was the last year for Martin to use Brazilian Rosewood on stock models, yet this D-35 doesn’t suffer for a bottom of the barrel set. The three-piece back has a mixture of lovely figure and straight grain, and pairs up with Sitka Spruce on top and a wide open voice. Our repair staff has gone over this one tuners to tail, including a fresh neck reset, and it’s playing like a well-oiled dream.

Here’s a wonderful example of Wilm Stötzel’s modern lutherie! This is a custom client commission decked out with Wenge back and sides (and bridge), plus German Spruce on top and Spalted Beech appointments throughout. A geometric headstock, combined with the partial rosette, makes a contemporary statement that perfectly accompanies the voice, itself the modern ideal with its mixture of power, clarity, and bloom.

Built in 2005 and played in since then! Wide awake and raring to go. Ready for this Maingard OM? You’d better be. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (a classic Maingard move) pairs with Italian Spruce on top, a 25.4” scale, and slim build weight of four pounds for a lightweight, responsive, agile fingerstyle machine. The OM proportions also hold up well under a flatpick, but we had the most fun taking this one into fingerstyle territory with dropped tunings—hardly surprising, given the responsiveness across the range with this Maingard. Soundhole is ringed in with a zigzag rosette and at the headstock we have gold Waverly tuners plus another spot of dramatic BRW with the headplate veneer.
All told, this 2005 Maingard OM is a well-oiled machine. We’d recommend this one to, frankly, anyone.Other keywords: south africa, lutherie, hiscox, brazilain, euro spruce, 195, fingerstyle

In 2010, fingerstyle phenom El McMeen and Bill Tippin collaborated on a signature model that took BIll’s Bravado body and tweaked it for additional playability, and paired that with Brazilian Rosewood & European Moonspruce for maximum resonance and response. As always, Bill more than succeeded. El McMeen Signature #1 operates like a well-oiled machine with its wedge-shaped body and upper bout soundport, chock full of smooth trebles and a liquid, rolling bass register that envelopes rather than booms. The 25.5” scale keeps the guitar crisp and responsive when dropped down to DADGAD and beyond; plenty of bite to be had when you dig in a bit. The aesthetics are understated elegance, with a Mother-of-Pearl motif in the trim and rosette, and at the top of the fretboard.
El’s put this Tippin through years of use, and it’s time to pass the torch! It’s in great playing shape, and is ready to keep the tunes going. Here’s an additional demo with our own Billy Presnell: https://youtu.be/-sRyVdj58Jo.

Bill Tippin repeatedly ranks in our top ten. Why? Consistency. Consistency in build quality, and consistency in tone: his guitars are fantastically balanced across the registers. This 2017 Forte is such a powerhouse! The Forte model is a slightly enlarged Crescendo, here upgraded with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce with Koa bindings and a soundport plus arm bevel. The Adi top really opens up after you play for a few minutes, lending a lively and organic quality to the player experience; you’ll remark that this particular guitar is quite wide awake. As mentioned, the balance is splendid across the range, and Bill’s managed to inject the same amount of power and presence into each note, making this an exquisite fingerstyle instrument. Plus it comes wrapped up safe and sound in a Calton case on those rare occasions when you aren’t playing it.

The Martin Custom Shop team knows how it’s done, and this 2013 D-45 Custom Shop proves it. They opted for a lovely set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides with black ink lines (ditto with the headstock veneer), paired that with classic Adirondack Spruce on top for bell-like tonality and power, then dressed it all to the nines with a 45-style package. Complete with Abalone hexagonal inlays, rather than the more commonly seen diamonds & squares. So this Custom Shop model has the visual flair to match the quality and presence of its voice, which we love for its clarity and warmth, especially in the midrange where many other dreads would suffer a muddy response. Instead, this D-45 has lovely balance and note definition across the registers.

The paired mini toggles turn the humbuckers into TCI-tuned single coils, plus the push/pull tone control to activate both humbuckers when engaged. John Slobod: one of the most dedicated and skilled builders of vintage-style guitars alive. The Circa we have here today is the happy child of those years of dedication and hard work. The power of this cannon is almost intimidating, and the strong, complex voice sounds like it should come from a guitar seven times as old. The Cocobolo back and sides and the Adirondack Spruce top both exhibit ramrod-straight grain, and give the guitar its bold voice and thick, enveloping low-end. The upper registers have subtle, sweet overtones to balance out that fearsome bottom-end, and the mids have lots of headroom in between. This is a hallmark Dreadnought, with miles of sustain and projection enough to fill any room; and John’s supreme craftsmanship to tie it all together with perfect fit and finish, Grained Ivoroid bindings, and Herringbone trim.

Martin’s D-28 Authentic 1937 Aged may be a mouthful, but it’s worth it. The torrefied tonewoods make for added power, articulation, and balance, as well as the use of a forward-shifted X brace, and Martin’s light relic job to make it look the part. This beauty comes to us from 2017 and is already wide awake and ready for action (thanks for the pre-breaking in, Martin’s torrefaction team!). Full neck profile feels lovely in hand, with the slimmer 1 11/16” nut that’s familiar for flatpickers.

Combined with an asymmetrical body and lovely tonewoods, and the result is a modern guitar quite unlike any other. This one excels at fingerstyle play in a range of tunings, and it’s got enough headroom for flatpicking as well. In a nutshell, this Caton Carolina has a full gear box.
