Brand New Caton Carolina, Curly Katalox/Engelmann Spruce
Kevin Caton pulls out the big body stops for this Carolina model in Curly Katalox and Engelmann Spruce. A powerful, clean voice, with some sort of indescribable quality to it that’s captivating and sets it apart from the crowd. Which Kevin’s innovative soundport-arm bevel combo also achieves. Combined with an asymmetrical body and lovely tonewoods, and the result is a modern guitar quite unlike any other. This one excels at fingerstyle play in a range of tunings, and it’s got enough headroom for flatpicking as well. In a nutshell, this Caton Carolina has a full gear box.

Timeless, indeed: our 2020 Preston Thompson D-14TMA Custom from their ultra exclusive Timeless Series. The Tree Mahogany back and sides—with extravagant turtleback figure—is here paired with Adirondack Spruce with Ebony bindings. Along the fretboard and headplate, recurring geometric marquetry with Mountain Mahogany, Brown Lip Shell, Black Pearl. Waverly tuners, 1 3/4” nut, EVO frets. A work of functional art.
The voice is distinctly smooth, even, and elegant. This doesn’t sound like your standard Mahogany Bluegrass strummer, although it performs fabulously in that capacity. We find the voice equally suited for fingerstyle work, letting individual notes really ring out. The clarity from string to string is really something you need to experience in person for maximum effect.
