2015 PRS Angelus Private Stock, Brazilian Rosewood/European Spruce
Pull all the stops, and you land a powerhouse like this 2015 PRS Private Stock. Figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, creamy (and dreamy) European Spruce top, with caramel Koa bindings and dark Abalone trim. The Private Stock team then went one step further by using Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard, bridge, tuner buttons, even the neck. The result is the definition of beautiful. The setup is slinky and smooth, and the bass and trebles mix up sweetly with a very warm and articulate midrange. The voice is rich, rich, rich.

1998 Manuel Velazquez Concert Classical, Malaysian Blackwood/Spruce
One of the most revered classical luthiers of the 21st century, Manuel Velazquez’s career boasts decades of incredible work. This lovely number from 1998 comes to us towards the last epoch of that career, and it’s got all the benefits that a master’s touch can provide after so many years’ experience. Brand New Mendel Octave Mandolin, Maple/Sitka Spruce
Here’s something we don’t see every day! Our friend and fine luthier Joe Mendel has brought us a punchy and powerful flattop-style octave mandolin upgraded with a multiscale fretboard for easy lefthand work. Combined with the guitar-style body’s smooth waist, this makes for a very comfortable playing experience—no more fighting to keep the neck up like you’d have to with a traditional mandolin-shaped design! Joe outfitted this beauty with EVO frets, Maple back and sides, plus Sitka Spruce on top, and Curly Maple bindings throughout.

2020 Froggy Bottom R14 50th Anniversary Limited, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
In 2020, to celebrate an astounding 50 years in the business, Froggy Bottom Guitars pulled out all of the stops for an exclusive series of guitars, and we’re grateful to visit with this one in the shop today. This R14 Limited is number four of only 18, and is outfitted with FB’s AAAAA pre-CITES Brazilian Rosewood and master grade Adirondack Spruce on top; heelcap of mammoth ivory engraved by Petria Mitchell; #7 style position markers and froggy logo engraved by Glenn Carson; a gorgeous sunburst from Chris Bavaria. The R14 body pulls from the L-00 family with a 14-fret neck and short scale setup. The result, with BRW and Adirondack, is a quick, responsive, and most importantly expressive sound.

1997 Olson SJ Cutaway, East Indian Rosewood/Cedar
We bet this Olson was a powerhouse when new in 1997. Now, some thirty odd years later, it’s even more so—with the added sweetness, power, and breathiness that comes with opening up for a few decades. This is such a wonderful example of Jim’s work from the late 90s. Indian Rosewood body with Cedar on top, plus a florentine cutaway and tortoise-style bindings and herringbone appointments.

1992 Olson SJ, Single Owner, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Here we’ve landed an early Jim Olson SJ, this time from 1992! Of course Jim was already at guitar #406 by then. This beauty has been well cared for by its single owner in all that time and is in great playing shape. Indian Rosewood body with Sitka Spruce on top sets it apart from the Rosewood-Cedar Olson sound, and this one has a bit extra oomph and power as a result. It’s still excellent for fingerstyle, but holds up well under a flatpick too. Upgrades include a forentine cutaway, Abalone trim plus Tortoise-style bindings, and Jim’s signature O headstock inlay plus MOP dove fretboard inlays. And the classic L.R. Baggs LB6 pickup to round it all out!

2017 Guild D-55 Antique Burst, Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Powerful and easy on the eyes. Guild’s classic D-55 Dreadnought comes to us here from 2017 with Rosewood body and Sitka Spruce on top, a tasty antique burst finish, and Abalone appointments to dress it to the nines and back. Lovely setup with spare saddles to handle changes in season and climate, plus a comfortable C profile neck and 1 11/16” nut well-suited to deft lefthand work.

2013 Charis SJ, Cocobolo/Cedar
Wide awake and singing oh so clear, our Charis SJ from 2013 is the perfect choice for anyone who wants a guitar that can do it all while looking good at the same time. This number is dressed to the nines with Red Cedar on top, brick-red Cocobolo back and sides with Tzalam bindings, and capped with a colorful, modern tree of life vine inlaid along the fretboard. Add to that a venetian cutaway, soundport, arm bevel, and L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system, and you’ve got an exercise in effortlessness. The sides are deep enough to enhance projection and round out the bass response, but the lower bout is still only 15 3/8” wide in Bill Wise’s SJ configuration, so this beauty is very comfortable in hand.

Calton Case for Dreadnought 14-Fret
Made in Canada Calton Flight case is in very good condition. It has superficial scuffs but is in excellent structural condition. All four hasps operate as intended and each one can be locked with the included key. Includes a detachable carrying strap.
Calton provides top of the line protection for your Dreadnought acoustic guitar, and this pre-owned case is priced much less than a new one.
2008 Traugott 00, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
We’ve seen a number of Jeff’s R models come through the shop, and a fair number of his BKs too, but only rarely have we had the chance to see a 00. And that’s a shame, because this number from 2008 is here to tell us that Jeff has perfected the small body guitar just as handily as he has the medium and the large. What an exquisite voice, lovely balance across the registers and equal parts energetic and elegant. Lots of projection under the hood, ready to burst out of the soundhole with even a light attack. It’s really a wonderful example of Jeff’s lutherie chops. The classic Traugott combination of German Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood is here in full force; combined with a 24.9” scale, 1 3.4” nut, and 2 3/8” saddle spacing for a spacious, comfortable righthand experience. Try and find a bad note on this guitar, we dare you.

Brand New Musser OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
With OM number 358, Don gives us a gorgeous example of the dynamism and wide-ranging appeal of this body size. This brand new Musser is responsive to many different styles of play, has a clarity and precision in the trebles that pairs up nicely with a sweet, rich bottom end, and the fit and finish are flawless from tuner to tail. For this build, Don picked out a chocolatey set of Brazilain Rosewood for the back and sides, paired it with Colorado Engelmann Spruce on top, and bound it all up with some truly lovely Curly Bigleaf Maple bindings (extra bevelled for creature comfort). And caps it off with a dalmatian style pickguard and Abalone rosette plus MOP torch headstock.

2010 Sheppard Grand Concert Minstrel, Amazon Rosewood/Caucasian Spruce
We love this one. A controlled, balanced, and articulate voice paired with a wider nut for fingerstyle play and some ergonomic features to maximize player comfort. Our 2010 Grand Concert Minstrel from Gerald Sheppard is hands down a gorgeous guitar on every level. Amazon Rosewood body with Caucasian Spruce on top, dual arm and rib bevels (plus a bevelled cutaway), and the aforementioned 1 13/16” nut all come together in an easy-playing, expressive package. There’s also a soundport! And Fossilized Walrus Ivory nut & saddle. Gerald built this as a deep body variation on his standard GC, and the added depth gives a darkness and power to the bottom end that we especially enjoy in dropped tunings.

2007 McPherson MG 4.5XP, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
We’ve landed a lovely McPherson MG 4.5XP from 2007 that’s been played in and is singing with a wide awake voice today. And it’s got a lot to sing about! Dramatic, figured Brazilian Rosewood body with Adirondack Spruce on top, Figured Koa bindings throughout; plus McPherson’s XP oversized soundhole and easy playing setup. The L.R. Baggs pickup system, complete with volume control at the soundhole, sounds fantastic, and will carry you faithfully on to the stage. This one holds up very well in a group setting as well—with McPherson’s second biggest body size, this MG 4.5XP has a lot of power under the hood, waiting to be let out.
