2001 Sobell Model 1, Cocobolo/German Spruce
Stefan Sobell’s Model 1 design is a fantastic example of a desert island guitar: it handles a wide range of musics, can be played hard or soft, and projects powerfully without being a full tilt jumbo guitar. This particular example from 2001 is proof of all that and more, here decked out with a three-piece Cocobolo back and German Spruce top, crows’ feet appointments, and a slinky low setup that’s effortless under your fingers. A Highlander IP-1 pickup will take you right up to the stage, and a Calton flight case will keep this Sobell safe and sound on those rare moments you aren’t playing it. Built in 2001, this Model 1 has had some good playing time under its belt and is oh. so. wide open.

Brand New Applegate FS/H, Quilted Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
Rather than just make a gorgeous guitar for his 200th, Brian Applegate decided to lean into the spirit of experimentation and design with this FS/H hybrid model. With an arched back paired to a flat top, the body has more air to move without necessarily being a bigger guitar, so playability remains easy and familiar, and there’s still the crispness and attack we associate with a flattop design to round out the voice. Brian opted for Quilted Mahogany for the back and sides, pairing up with Adirondack Spruce on top for added stiffness and power, plus his classic five-ply neck in slim profile for stability and easy playing. A geometric rosette and Brazilian Rosewood bridge, plus Macassar Ebony fretboard, offer a tasteful and elegantly understated aesthetic.

2021 Eastman Cabaret, Maple/Spruce
Now here’s an incredible deal. Always wanted a Buscarino Cabaret but couldn’t afford it? Try on this 2021 Eastman Cabaret for size. John worked directly with Eastman to design an affordable Crossover guitar, and they nailed it. 12 fret neck with a radiused fretboard, slimmer nut at 1 15/16”, plus subtle cutaway and soundport? Yes, please! And this beauty has a James May Ultra Tonic pickup with soundhole-mounted volume control—and this pickup sounds oh so incredible. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top.

Brand New Preston Thompson D-SBA-42, Shipwreck Brazilian/Adirondack
Wow, and wow. We’re struck by this one from our friends at Preston Thompson Guitars—it’s a real force of nature. One of our clients commissioned this build with us, and we’ve had such a blast collaborating with him and the PKT team. The voice is immense, and balanced, with striking clarity and power in the trebles and a bottom end that is rich and palpable. Pairing up handsomely with an articulate and even midrange to boot. And this isn’t surprising, given what we’ve heard from other Shipwreck builds—Thompson’s supply of Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood is growing thin, while their extant guitars are growing in popularity (and tone as they open up). Adirondack Spruce on top with a well-executed 42-Style trim package throughout, gold Waverly tuners, and a K&K Pure Mini pickup. 2006 Manzer Crossover, Indian Rosewood/Cedar
A special treat if ever we saw one. Here we’ve landed a lovely Manzer Crossover from 2006 that’s opened up handsomely with Indian Rosewood and Cedar and is ready for more action. Crossovers are the perfect choice for the steel string player who wants to expand their tonal horizons and master a new kind of play feel with nylon strings, but with the creature comforts of a steel string guitar to make it easy to play and, frankly, more fun. Here of course Linda used her patented Manzer Wedge body design to tilt the guitar top up and back a touch towards the player, and added a cutaway for upper fret access. Then there’s a radiused fretboard and pickup + mic internal electronics. This one’s set up for just about every genre you throw at it.

Brand New Preston Thompson DBA-45, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Brand new and raring to go! This Preston Thompson DBA-45 is as beautiful to the eyes as it is to the ears, and plays handsomely to boot. Lovely, chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood body with Adirondack Spruce on top, Mahogany neck plus 1 3/4” nut, and stunning 45-style appointments throughout. That’s over 240” of Abalone on the top, back, and sides! These elements take a tremendous amount of time and skill to make come together at such a high level of quality. To date, the Preston Thompson team has only made five other 45-style guitars before this one, so this is very special to say the least. It’s is what a Bluegrass cannon should be: powerful, articulate, and rewarding.

A true one-of-a-kind, bespoke piece of functional art. Thank you, Matthias and Matthew of Casimi Guitars—this C2S is perfection. Straight-grained Wenge back and sides pair up with Alpine Moonspruce, their signature 12 fret design plus deep cutaway, and the gorgeous hollowed headstock design. Visually, the rosette is animated with a colorful array of hummingbirds African sunbirds, and Cape King Protea flowers.

2009 Simon Fay OM, Flamed Claro Walnut/Sinker Redwood
Serious powerhouse on the scene; hard to put this beauty down for any length of time. Simon Fay knocked it right out of the park with this OM from 2009—lively and energetic, crisp with great pop!, fires right out of the soundhole. This one takes to a flatpick like a natural, and has enough sensitivity to respond great under fingers as well. This exemplifies the attributes of the OM, namely, well-rounded and equally at home in every setting. Additionally, the setup is silky smooth, and Fay pulled out gorgeous tonewoods to dress it up. Flamed Claro Walnut back and sides (elements of crisp and woody tone) with Sinker Redwood on top (and the warmth and color that fills out the rest of the voice), plus Snakewood bindings and a soundport for creature comforts. The sides are double thicknessed with Zebrawood interiors, and Simon braced the Redwood top with his unique T bracing pattern.

2019 Lowden F-35, Macassar Ebony/Sinker Redwood
George Lowden’s F body does it all, and does so exceedingly well. Here paired with AAAA Ebony back and sides and AAAA Sinker Redwood on top and Tasmanian Blackwood bindings/bevel, the resulting voice combines a punchy bottom end with warm mids and smooth trebles that cut nicely through the mix. The GL Standard neck profile feels full in hand with a generous C-shaped profile, and this beauty has a silk-smooth setup that feels effortless.

Indian Rosewood body with German Spruce on top, Waverly tuners, and a gorgeous piece of flair with a Brazilian Rosewood headplate—this Legacy D model is a classic beauty. The voice has great balance across the registers, with the lively, opened up quality that only comes after several years of music, which this M.J. Franks certainly has had. Well cared for and rocking an easy setup to boot!

2020 Ryan Paradiso Grand Concert, Mahogany/Engelmann Spruce
A nearly new Ryan Paradiso, get it before it’s gone! This lovely number comes to us from 2020 with lightweight Mahogany body and Engelmann Spruce on top, plus Kevin’s full suite of Design Innovations to meet the needs of virtually any guitar player. The GC body has a heavily arched back for added resonance and projection without being a big guitar (the lower bout is only 15 1/4” across), and the addition of the bevel with acoustic flutes and florentine cutaway make for an effortless playing experience to boot. The voice is glassy and clear, with sweet trebles pairing with a juicy, juicy midrange. It’s a fingerstyle powerhouse that’s equally at home with picks and strumming.

2014 Paul McGill Super Ace Crossover, Flame Maple/Lutz Spruce
Paul McGill is a household name in Nashville’s session scene, and the reason is crossover masterpieces like this Super Ace from 2014. Figured Maple back and sides with Lutz Spruce on top, radiused fretboard and cutaway, plus Paul’s custom onboard preamp and Graphtech saddle pickup system—and that’s just the start. The setup is effortless on this beauty, and with a longer, 25 3/4” scale, the voice is crisp, expressive, and very energetic. Equally at home with a Classical repertoire, Jazz, Blues, or any other genre you want to throw it into. Additionally, there’s a soundport in the upper bout to give the player a little more “me in the monitor,” and a sloping venetian cutaway for unencumbered access to those uppermost frets. Cocobolo bindings throughout (as well as the bridge and headstock veneer) really set of the amber palette of the Maple and Lutz.
