This 1a Rio graduated at the top of its class in 2001 from Casimiro Lozano—and it’s gone up, up, and up since then. We love the powerful, warm, present and awake flavor of this Lozano, especially in the articulate, defined bass register. Trebles and mids pair up smoothly to fill out the voice, with a sweetness in the upper mids that comes out under a light attack. Being Lozano’s Rio model, this 1a has been upgraded with lovely Brazilian Rosewood and a Spruce top, 650mm scale, Spanish Cedar neck, and French Polish finish throughout for maximum resonance. Being 20 years old, this 1a Rio has opened up oh so handsomely, and has been well cared for with only some play marks on top.

Herman Hauser I needs no introduction to the classical world. However, aside from the family of Spanish guitars for which he is best known, Hauser I also built a number of other instruments according to the musical trends of the turn of the twentieth century, among them zithers and even lutes. Here we have an example of his Vienna Hybrid model, a design favored in the Munich music scene with Maple body over Spruce, an adjustable neck, mustache bridge, and zero fret. The sound is lively and quick, with a punchy, bright treble register that cuts through the mix. The bass register is energetic and brassy and projects with a crisp sweetness. Playability is superb, plus this Vienna model with its thin sides (only 3” at the tail) weighs in just over three pounds.
A remarkable example of one of traditional lutherie’s giants, this Hauser I Vienna model is a testament to his enduring legacy.Other keywords: classical guitar, classical, nylon string, luthier, lutherie, fingerstyle, marquetry, handmade, french polished, steve newbrough, andy jurik, 339867, viena, veinna, russell cleveland
2019 Kraut OM, Koa/Swiss Moonspruce
Featherweight build packs heavyweight tone. Our 2019 OM from Ray Kraut is a pale-topped knockout with Flamed Koa and Swiss Moonspruce—plays effortlessly, with fearsome tonal reserves waiting to be tapped. In short, we’re in love with this Kraut OM. Ray’s voiced this Swiss Spruce beauty for maximum responsiveness paired with an even temperament: from fret to fret and string to string, this Kraut remains balanced and clear. Open tunings are a dream on this machine, where the Koa back and sides lend a hint of dry woodiness that keeps clarity at the forefront of the voice. We tried and tried to make this guitar sound bad, but if there’s a flub note on this Kraut, we can’t find it. Weighing in at a scant 3.75lbs, it’s a study in fingerstyle finesse without parallel.

Brent McElroy’s 2018 Generation 2.1 Standard Model is a powerhorse (that’s the intersection of powerhouse and workhorse) dressed to the nines with Adirondack Spruce on top, Claro Walnut back and sides, and a gorgeous Amboyna Burl rosette. The voice here is characterized by a dry, woody response that fires right off the top with a quick decay that makes for added clarity on those fast passages. A pinless Ebony bridge with bone saddle helps more efficiently activate the Adi top, and makes for effortless string changes to boot. The neck is finished in satin for an old-pair-of-jeans kind of feel in hand with a slim profile for easy fretability.

Bastien Burlot has been a staple of French lutherie for years, having built guitars for such giants as Thomas Viloteau and the late Roland Dyens, cultivating a unique voice that combines the power and presence of modern styles with the warmth and elegance of tradition for a simultaneously fresh, and timeless, flavor. Recently, Burlot launched a new project that ties these two ideas even more snugly: the Alkemia Series. These Classicals are inspired by the most famous cathedrals in France, with the first in this series being the Alkemia Chartres Cathedral (found about an hour outside of Paris). The tightly patterned mosaic rosette is modeled directly after the stained glass windows of the church, and inside the guitar the label features a labyrinth in homage to the floor of the cathedral’s nave. Here pilgrims have gathered for hundreds of years to walk the labyrinth in contemplation.
Here’s an additional video with Andy Jurik playing the lovely “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (J.S. Bach) on this Burlot Classical: https://youtu.be/3vq-Wdupyek

Smooth to a T and balanced like a dancer. This 1959 Masaru Kono performs with precision and elegance, with a lovely balance across the registers and a bell-like clarity in the mids and trebles. We love this evenness, which makes this an excellent Classical for recording, or the artist who needs the string-to-string balance to be dialed in. Going strong since 1959, this Kono has had a few repairs and is in great playing shape. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top, 650mm scale with a Rosewood fingerboard, and a Spanish Cedar neck that features more of a C-shaped profile than the U shape commonly found on nylon string instruments.

Mike Blanchard’s Bristlecone weighs in a touch larger than a traditional OM, and that extra depth adds presence and power to the voice, without launching full tilt into a large guitar. Instead, the Bristlecone is easy in hand and a lively singer. Great string energy and responsiveness, with a voice characterized by balance and clarity, makes for a fine fingerpicking experience. This lovely number from 2000 has Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with Adirondack Spruce on top, plus Curly Maple bindings to really set it off. The woods are gorgeous, especially the tightly figured Honduran Mahogany back and sides, which Bortot pairs up with Rosewood bindings for an understated look. The body and headplate are buffed to a clear gloss, but the neck is satin smooth, velvet to the touch. We’re very much fans of this neck. The rosette features an interlocking motif for centerpiece. This one practically moves on its own. So much energy under the hood! We simply love how alive and vibrant Marc Maingard’s 000s are, and this one’s one of the most electric we’ve seen. Opening up since 2007, it’s fantastically awake and raring to go. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides match up with a lovely, creamy European Spruce top, 12 fret neck join, and arm & rib bevels for creature comfort. Aesthetically, Marc’s distinctive headplate design is set off with custom tuners and the rosette pops in turquoise (echoed with similar purflings along the top, back, and heelcap).
The voice is quick, immediate, vigorous. The registers mix up nicely, with a crisp bottom end that feels like it’s leaping out of the soundhole. Playability is gossamer to boot, and the 12-fret neck makes the 25.4” scale feel extra easy in hand.
