2010 Brondel A1-C, Malaysian Blackwood/German Spruce
What a powerhouse we have here in this 2010 A-1c by Laurent Brondel. Dressed in Malaysian Blackwood and German Spruce—Laurent’s guitars never disappoint and this is no exception. What is exceptional about this instrument however is the bracing. Loaded with a laminated “Larson-style” bracing–this guitar is built for power. It goes without saying there is plenty of headroom here, deep bass as well as strong and sparkling trebles. This dreadnought-sized cutaway is comfortable in hand. Roomy and spacious in both feel and sound. Laurent’s signature arched, rather than domed, top and back certainly contribute to this sense of comfort. As well as the warm and natural aesthetic, this Brondel A-1c feels like home.

Such a delight to visit with this beauty. Michael Bashkin builds premium grade modern fingerstyle instruments, just like this 2017 SJ with Myrtlewood back and sides plus Italian Spruce on top.The voice is characterized by clarity, balance, and smoothness, equally at home in Standard tuning as it is in DADGAD and some C tunings (thanks to the 26-25.4″ multiscale fingerboard). Frets are dressed with semi-hemispherical fret ends, making for a very smooth playing experience under your fingertips. At the headstock you’ll find a delicate inlay scheme with micro purflings looping across the headplate veneer and between the Waverly tuners. All of this comes wrapped in a Hoffee flight case with an added layer of Thinsulate for maximum protection.

We’re more than happy to be able to offer an exquisite southpaw FS Lefty guitar from Bruce and Matt Petros, built in 2014–here rendered with Figured Bubinga back and sides and Curly Redwood top, extensive Purflex Celtic inlays along the rosette and trim and back strip, right down to the tuner buttons themselves. We’ve been longtime fans of Marc Maingard’s work, happily representing him here in the States. This 2003 GC comes to us with two decades’ of experience under its belt and a wide open, full throttle kind of responsiveness. Firecracker explosive! Cocobolo back and sides with German Spruce top, slender V neck, green-and-red purflings and rosette, and sharp florentine cutaway.

We’re huge fans of Preston Thompson Guitars over here, ditto for Jake Workman of Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder fame, so when those two came together you know the result is going to be special. In 2017 Jake spec’d this model out with Thompson’s Shipwreck stash of Brazilian Rosewood (basically unavailable today) and some tight-grained Adirondack Spruce on top, then combined that with a hybrid of 21 and 18-style appointments. K&K Trinity dual source pickup system and EVO frets are the icing on the cake. Moreso, the PKT team built this beau with a slender play weight which makes the guitar feel extra alive and singing in your hands. Add to that a fast neck and great setup, and this PKT DBA-JW is one of those rare guitars that can immediately take you out of yourself to get lost in the music.

Mark Blanchard’s Bristlecone is one of those models that always feels comfortable, and always sounds great. This 2008 Bristlecone is no less than any of that! Carpathian Spruce top with Mahogany back and sides offers a crisp voice with great transparancy and clarity across the registers; ergonomics include a venetian cutaway and a Manzer body wedge. A K&K Pure Mini pickup has been installed (sounds fantastic), ditto for gold EVO frets and a strap button.

In a word, gorgeous. Howard Klepper pulled off an excellent conversion job with this 2013 00-40 which began life in 1960 as a Martin 00-28G. Accordingly, quarter sawn Brazilian Rosewood with some delectable feathered figuring at the bout ends, with a new Red Spruce top and 14-fret neck. Klepper added 40-style Abalone trim along the top, as well as diamonds & snowflakes position markers, Rosewood bridge, and Ivoroid bindings. A light brown shade top finish pairs up with the richness of the Brazilian sides to a T.

Every Calton Case is handcrafted and custom-fit to your instrument.
How are Calton Cases made? By hand and with love. While Calton CNC initial plugs and molds for testing new styles and shapes, once they’ve tested the cases—inside and out—they are made by hand. Without giving away too many secrets, here is how they do it:
- Measurements: we rely on you (and your dealer) for precise measurements of your instruments. This ensures the perfect fit.
- Exterior I: three layers of hand-laid fiberglass build the foundation for the side walls, tops and bottoms of each case.
- Exterior II: once the fiberglass shell is trimmed, up to 97 rivets are used to adhere latches, catch surrounds (leather bumpers), protective feet and a custom leather handle.
- Interior Stage I: gluing of the rubber trim and initial placement of interior fabric, foam and lining.
- Interior Stage II: cutting and assembly of the remaining foam layers and final velvet placement.
- Squeaky Clean: we call this the “detailing” stage where we meticulously polish exteriors and vacuum interiors.
- Final Inspection: every square inch of every case is looked over, making sure it is ready for the road. We add your label (with serial number) and ship!
