2000 Huss & Dalton CM Custom Koa/Cedar
To tell the truth, we’re pretty impressed. This 2000 CM Custom from Huss & Dalton has one of the loudest voices you’ll find from a guitar of this size. We can thank the figured Koa back and sides for that, and the Cedar top for giving the guitar an articulate and warm depth–and with everything bound in Curly Maple, this guitar’s a sight to see. Fingerstylists will fall in love with just how responsive this guitar is, and how well it intonates in lowered tunings. For recording, there aren’t many guitars at this price point that can half shine as well. The slim profile of the neck is easy on the hands, and the smaller dimensions of the body allow for comfortable playing, but thanks to Huss & Dalton’s deeper sides, there’s no loss of projection or sustain. This guitar comes equipped with a K&K Passive Mini, so it’s ready to roll acoustic or amplified, and comes with a debonaire TKL tweed hardshell case so you show up at the gig in style.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to this lion in a guitar’s clothing. The 2007 Goodall MSC (Maple Standard Cutaway) Dreadnought we’ve got here is a real eye- (and ear-) catcher of a strummer, with tight Curly Maple back and sides and topped with Sitka Spruce–a Dreadnought which is bright and responsive with a bottom-end that is warm and tender. The Curly Maple provides its hallmark crispness and drive, but thanks to the Dreadnought body that brightness is tempered across the registers, such that the tone is even and balanced (two words not often used to describe anything approaching a Dreadnought). A real flatpicker’s delight, this Goodall MSC responds beautifully to aggressive attack for Bluegrass, but is also clean and expressive for a Sunday afternoon waltz. Lastly, the MSC is both a powerhouse unplugged and amplified, thanks to the installation of a L.R. Baggs I-Beam bridge plate pickup. This guitar comes with an Ameritage hardshell case.

2008 McGill Picasso Cocobolo/German
Paul McGill has earned his reputation as a modern legend with his years of dedication, his exacting perfection, and his incredibly fine-tuned skills and ear. If ever you’ve played a McGill, you know how heartbreaking the moment was when you had to return it to its owner, himself overeager to get the guitar back into his own hands. Next to his Super Ace and Super Steel String, the Picasso nylon string series is one of his finest claims to fame. The Picasso we have here today is, in particular, special: this guitar is #4 in the Collector’s Series. On top of McGill’s fabulous build, this guitar features Cocobolo Rosewood back, sides, and bridge (with a stunning Abalone tying block) and a German Spruce top to really amplifiy the richness of his Picasso model. The guitar’s sustain will pour out for hours, days, with an absorbing, meditative low-end and sweet, shimmering trebles. Breathe on this guitar and it bursts into action; so resonant and responsive. Between the avant garde body design and McGill’s innovative but tasteful appointments, this guitar has got everything working in its favor. The offset rosette, dropped shoulder, and polished Cocobolo bridge all speak to the overwhelming beauty and strength of McGill’s Picasso model, and this one in particular. Pick it up once, and you’ll never want to put it down again.

Break out the flip flops and limes–it’s Margaritaville time. Number 302 of 305, this 2003 Martin Jimmy Buffet “Pollywog” 000 is one of the very last in a limited run of beach-going guitars designed for easy playability and warm tones. With a Mahogany back and sides and Sitka Spruce top in Martin’s 000 package, this nautically themed 12-fret is fun and lively, with the warmth and ease of play that comes from the shorter neck and moving the bridge to the center of the lower bout, optimizing the Sitka Spruce top’s ability to resonate. For a smaller guitar, this one’s got great projection, and it doesn’t peak easily. This guitar is designed for fingerpicking, but it can handle some serious strumming, too–just don’t scratch the Blue Paua Abalone rosette! We only say that because, right now, this guitar is practically mint; good luck looking for a scratch on this one. And lastly, because Jimmy Buffet’s a stylish man and likes to dress his “Pollywog” appropriately, this guitar comes protected by a deluxe leather Martin hardshell case.

R.M. Anderson is many things to us at Dream Guitars: a neighbor, a friend, and an excellent inlay artist and maker of banjos. The Banjeaurine we have here is brand new, hot off the workbench, and is absolutely teeming with gorgeous Mother-of-Pearl inlay. Anderson based the various designs off of inlay work from Cole and Fairbanks, when they were still partnered, and executed them in excruciating detail. Images range from floral patterns, geometric shapes, and butterflies, to a moon-and-star headstock inlay that, according to Bob, was popularized by banjo makers in the late 1800’s in celebration of Halley’s Comet, the only short-term comet that is visible to the naked human eye, which flashed across the skies in 1835, and later in 1910. Bound in Grained Ivoroid and featuring a vintage Vega “White Laydie” pot, this short-scale banjo is pure magic for both the eyes and the ear.
2003 Breedlove Cascade Mandolin Flamed Maple/Sitka
We’ve got a live-wire of a mandolin from the folks at Breedlove Guitars in the story today! In addition to making distinctive and expressive guitars, Breedlove also makes fine mandolins, like this 2003 Breedlove Cascade. With Flamed Maple for the back, sides, and neck, and Sitka Spruce on top, this modified F-style (which Breedlove has coined the “K-style“) has great drive and an energetic, punchy tone. The clarity and articulation of this mandolin set it apart from others in this price range (no damp, flubby notes here), making it an excellent buy for either the guitarist looking to expand his repertoire or the mandolinist looking for a great gigging mando. This one is set up great for Bluegrass, but it could be easily adapted for Blues or Traditional music. Lastly, this mandolin comes with the original briefcase-style Breedlove hardshell case.

In the eleventh hour, Breedlove built this 2006 Calendar XII, ushering in the midnight capstone to a series of twelve guitars they built, each following their own peculiar design. Those built in 2006, like this Calendar XII, were part of a limited production run of ten guitars for each calendar month, making them extra collectable and significant. What sets this one apart from its other monthly cousins is the use of extremely lightweight Myrtlewood for the back, sides, and top of the instrument. Similar in tone to Maple, Myrtlewood has an acutely focused tone which is dry and responsive. Unlike Maple, which can be so bright and in-your-face as to be blinding, this Myrtlewood has an even, controlled voice that really lends itself to flatpicking. Breedlove’s designs are always bombproof but agile, and the Calendar XII is no exception. Fingerstylists can also benefit greatly from the clean drive and string-to-string articulation that define this one’s voice. This guitar sings like a soft, cool breeze; soothing, rather than freezing.

Put this 2015 Ritter Princess Isabella in a crowded room of guitars, and you could still find the Isabella in seconds. From the progressively curved shape of the body to the exquisite woods (German Alder body, Swietenia Mahogany neck), we’re talking about an instrument which stands head and shoulders (and what shoulders they are!) above even top-of-the-line electrics. Jens Ritter has included his trademark, handcast brass bows for a tailpiece which functions as an “attack delay” feature, and has shaped the body to be extra thin (just under an inch) to keep the weight of the instrument down. Instead of using a traditional “floating” bridge or attaching the bridge with studs into the body, the hand cast bridge foot is “mounted” into a small hollowed area carved into the body that exactly matches the contour of the bridge foot, which is held in place by friction and only makes contact with a 2mm thin elliptical contour ridge along the hollow area. Thus, most of the surface area on the interior side of the bridge foot and the bridge studs “float” in the hollow area. With a Haeussel Custom Fat-Jazz pickup and 24.75″ scale, this beast is ready for any and all kinds of music you throw at it.
New Rein Crossover Classical Honduran Rosewood/Lutz
When Thomas Rein lays his hands on the right set of wood, he knows exactly what to do: build a beautiful, resonant guitar. With this 2015 Crossover Classical, that’s exactly what he did. In pairing Honduran Rosewood with a Lutz Spruce top, Rein has created a guitar capable of singing bright and energetic in one passage, somber and thoughtful the next. In order to maximize the thinness, and hence resonance, of the Lutz Spruce, Rein French Polished the top, and used a stronger catalyzed urethane for the rest of the guitar, which is more susceptible to dings and scrapes over time.
When played, this Crossover Classical has a clean, clear voice, like sunlight refracted through a glass of water. The trebles have great body and focus, while the low-end is easy and rolling, and thanks to Rein’s excellent fit and finish, the guitar plays effortlessly. The great fountain of potential energy which is the body is made possible by Rein’s finely-honed technique in voicing the Lutz Spruce top and creating a very lightweight body from the Honduran Rosewood back and sides. You could play this Crossover Classical for hours and never get tired; its voice is so clean and sustained. This guitar comes with the original TKL hardshell case.

If ever there was a guitar for both fingerstylists and flatpickers, this guitar is it. Kevin Chubbuck’s years at first Santa Cruz guitars and later Bill Tippin’s shop inform his excellent skills, and have given him countless hours to hone his craft. Thus, when we offer you his large-bodied 2015 Kalliope, we do so with great confidence in his guitars. Not only does the Kalliope project like a dreadnought–it also has the agile, articulate tonality of a much smaller guitar. The result is an instrument with a deep, resounding low-end that is perfectly balanced with rich trebles and a dynamic range. The Panamanian Rosewood back and sides have a desirable tight grain and the upper bout boasts a slender soundport which really projects a great portion of this guitar’s complex tone right to the player’s ear. Paired with a Swiss “Moon” Spruce top, the soundbox is light and responsive–the strings respond to the lightest touch, but the sound doesn’t become distorted under a more aggressive attack, either. Each note rings clear as a bell on this guitar. Chubbuck has added a Ryan-style arm bevel for playing comfort and a K&K Pure Mini pickup with vintage jack. Lastly, this guitar will travel with you safely wherever you go, thanks to the custom-molded fiberglass Calton Flight Case.

It is always an honor to feature one of Keisuke Nishi’s guitars in our store. Formerly one of Mario Beauregard’s apprentices, Keisuke’s work is absorbed by muscular voicing and 3-dimensionality–and the 2015 SJ we have here showcases both. From Keisuke’s furrowed rosette (made of Amboyna Burl with a narrow channel routed through the center), to his painstakingly sculpted cutaway and heel block, whereby the profile of the heel continues down and into the Florentine Cutaway, this guitar is as much a work of art as it is an instrument. When you stumble across the smaller details–the magnetic bone truss rod cover or the gracefully mitered Brazilian Rosewood fretboard–it’s almost enough to take your breath away. But you’ll want to keep your wits about you, because once you actually strum a chord on this SJ, you will be overwhelmed by the immensity of the voice, how the middle registers expand and hang on the air, and the trebles murmur with airy overtones. This guitar has heaps of headroom! Clear and focused, the SJ has excellent balance. Keisuke knew what he was doing when he paired Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides with German Moon Spruce, and we’re grateful to have this inspiring instrument in our midst.

Michihiro Matsuda: a sculpter among luthiers. Wrought as though by magic, this 2015 Matsuda Deconstruction electric guitar contains a piece of most of the major tonewoods used today, from the Spruce soundboard and back plate, the Figured Maple side rests, Ebony pickguard, Rosewood head and backplate, Wenge tuner knobs, adjustable bridge, and fretboard, to Mahogany for a lower bout lap rest and neck. Add to that the complex maze that is the body’s insides–the collection of puzzle-piece guts of Mahogany, Wenge, and Ebony–and a suspended shoulder strap pin, and you’ve got an instrument which is completely unmistakable. Outfitted with powerhouse electronics, this guitar plays clean, smooth, and responsive. Housed in a custom flight case made by the folks at A&S, you can rest assured that you will never misplace it, nor that the Deconstruction will ever come to harm.
2011 Matsuda Drop D Brazilian/European
As always, Michi Matsuda’s guitars are astounding. The “Drop D” featured here was only in our store for a matter of minutes before it was purchased, but we were able to at least photograph Michi’s artistry before it went right back out the door. Upon observing the guitar, the first thing you notice the forked Brazilian Rosewood headstock, extended Ebony fretboard for the low E, and the built-in Wenge capo. And if that wasn’t enough to take your breath away, there’s the intricate, elegant heel of Mahogany and Wenge. After features such as these, the fact that the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are sumptuously figured is almost (almost) mundane–but that crisp sunburst Spruce top is definitely unforgettable. Combined, they lend the guitar a sublime, full tone with rich bass and musical treble that are clear and present. Thanks to Michi’s “Drop D” innovation, this guitar can be played in a variety of tunings with minimal effort. Here, Michi’s outdone himself, building an incredible guitar that can change tunings with the flick of a wrist.

Guild Guitars were one of the first companies to put 12-strings on the map in the 1960s, singlehandedly establishing the industry standard for double-course guitars. The huge, powerful sound that we associate with 12-strings? Guild’s handiwork. This 1983 D-80-12 is an excellent example of their hallmark voice with East Indian Rosewood back and sides and a Spruce top. Built like a brick house, this 12-string is equally suited to delicate fingerstyle and aggressive flatpicking, with miles of sustain and an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup for unrivalled clarity when amplified. This particular 12-string was custom built by the then-Master Luthier of Guild Guitars before Jerre Haskew, the former president of the company who hired Kim Walker to save it and pave the way for his own work, acquired the instrument–and we trust Jerre when he tells us, “This is the finest production 12-string guitar I’ve ever seen, heard or played regardless of brand.” If you’re interested in the classic 12-string sound in an iconic package with smooth action and a sweet, fiery sunburst finish, look no further than this Guild D-80-12.
