As it is with our own children, so it is with guitars: siblings stick together. When Jeff Traugott was approached with the concept of building two sister R Model guitars–one 6-string, the other 12–he saw an opportunity to create two guitars which would grow and sing in tandem and bring out the best in each other. These two guitars are built from matching sets of Brazilian Rosewood for the backs and sides which came from the same board that was saved from its droll life as a bookshelf and transformed into two astonishingly rich guitars. Similarly, the German Spruce tops are a matched pair, as are the Fossilized Ivory nuts and saddles.
The 6-string twin may have half as many strings, but it has half again as much bass and snap as its 12-string sister. Jeff’s taste for fine-grained Brazilian Rosewood, with its enveloping sonority, and his ability to voice the German Spruce top to accentuate the upper registers, combine in the form of a guitar with flawless separation of notes and a dynamic voice. Naturally a fingerstylist’s dream, this Traugott R exudes both sizzling responsiveness and sweet, subtle overtones.

Jeff’s abilities continue to astound: here he’s made a 12-string R with all the focus and precision of its 6-string sister. This is a 12-string like no other: where most 12’s have a big, brash voice, this 12-string is clear and articulate; where many 12’s fill a room with the sheer force of their projection, Jeff’s 12-string envelopes the air with the bell-like clarity and focus of each string pair. In a word, this 12-string speaks directly to you when another would shout at you. Fingerstylists will adore how well-balanced the guitar is across the registers, and the myriad colors that can be discovered in alternate tunings.

The sweets of time are strong in this one. We love a guitar that’s opened up; love it so much more when it’s a Kevin Ryan Mission Grand Concert from 2001. Cedar top plus Mahogany body, wide awake and singing, makes for a very responsive and engaging voice. Trebles have the classic Ryan shimmer, but there’s also a lively and organic quality to the bass and mids to really fill out the voice. Tune it to DADGAD and hold onto your picks, folx. With a fresh refret to the tune of Gold EVO frets, this Ryan MGC is raring to go for another 20 years.

This gorgeous gem of lutherie was originally built in 2012, Matthias Roux and Matthew Rice (the duo that makes up Casimi Guitars) have since reworked it with a wider fretboard and shining new Alpine Moonspruce top over the original African Blackwood back and sides—and if it sounded great before, it’s even more impressive now. This C2 Signature offers a wide, expansive tonal range that incorporates a smooth treble response with soft overtones with mids and basses characterized by an easy clarity and definition. This is an instrument with fingerstyle in mind, and it drinks up altered tunings like water. Arm and rib bevels, deep florentine cutaway, and a 12-fret neck come together for an exercise in ergonomics that leaves other flattops feeling clunky and roughspun. An upper bout soundport keeps the player dialed in to their music, and the hollowed-out headstock keeps the neck weight down, letting the body of the guitar anchor comfortably against your chest and leg.
After hearing nothing but praise about Mathias and Matthew’s instruments for several years now, we’re proud to be able to offer their work for the first time here in Asheville, North Carolina.Other keywords: south africa, marc maingard, maingard, luthier, C2S, C2-S, abw, moon spruce, finger style, fingerpicking

It’s guitars like this that get us out of bed in the morning. Kim Walker knows exactly how to get every last ounce out of his guitars. We were happy to take this 2004 SJ A Deluxe—and even happier to send it right on to its new home before we could list it. Flamed Maple back and sides, Bearclaw German Spruce top, a gorgeous light tobacco burst everywhere, and dark green 42-style Abalone trim that’s reminiscent of prewar Martin inlays. The kind of clarity and response that we’ve come to expect from each Kim Walker? This SJ is no exception. The bass retains a clean and enveloping fundamental without overpowering the voice, and we loved the neck carve, a slightly flattened C shape. Gold Waverly tuners and a Calton case don’t hurt, either.

A guitar for all occasions, this 2009 Flammang GC60-LD. Dressed to the nines with dramatic Brazilian Rosewood and Carpathian Spruce on top, Ebony bindings throughout, and nickel Schaller tuners with matching Ebony buttons. The Carpathian has opened up handsomely in the past decade, lending a breathiness and power to the voice that really comes out with single runs on the treble strings and blooming out with big held chords. We’d recommend this guitar for anyone looking for an all-around great guitar that specializes with note separation and sustain.

Here’s a sweet piece of California lutherie that’s opened up handsomely: the 2010 Moonstone 000-42 in Cocobolo and Adirondack. We love the excellent balance across the registers, and the velvet richness of the midrange especially which helps fill out the voice. Playability is buttery with a 24 3/4” scale, and in spite of the short scale we were able to tune this one down without loss of clarity and projection. Indeed, this Moonstone took to DADGAD like it was born in the tuning. The Cocobolo back and sides have dramatic figuring, while the Adirondack top has tight grain and is set off by 42-style Abalone trim. A slim build weight at 4.5lbs, in a 000 package, makes for a comfortable playing experience. 10/10 would recommend.
