It’s guitars like this that get us out of bed in the morning. Kim Walker knows exactly how to get every last ounce out of his guitars. We were happy to take this 2004 SJ A Deluxe—and even happier to send it right on to its new home before we could list it. Flamed Maple back and sides, Bearclaw German Spruce top, a gorgeous light tobacco burst everywhere, and dark green 42-style Abalone trim that’s reminiscent of prewar Martin inlays. The kind of clarity and response that we’ve come to expect from each Kim Walker? This SJ is no exception. The bass retains a clean and enveloping fundamental without overpowering the voice, and we loved the neck carve, a slightly flattened C shape. Gold Waverly tuners and a Calton case don’t hurt, either.
