2019 Lowden S-50W, All Walnut
2019 but already wide awake. We landed this Lowden S-50W and were immediately struck by the gorgeous all Walnut body that’s set off by pale Maple bindings and arm bevel. 24 3/4” scale length makes for easy playability, and the 50 series appointments with Abalone GL Leaf inlays along the fretboard offers an understated aesthetic to better show off the figuring of all this Walnut. The voice has great balance and woody characteristics, and it has this cool warming up quality that comes out after a few minutes’ play. Definitely a great choice for the player who wants a full spectrum sound in a smaller package.

Brand New Mountain Song Heumiller OD-J Baritone, Padauk/Adirondack Spruce
The first signature baritone of Paul Heumiller from Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars! Based on the specs of Paul’s original Mountain Song OD-J baritone, this beauty is dressed to the nines with fiery Padauk back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top, and of course a multiscale setup of 28.5 to 27 inches for plenty of power and clarity across the range. Twin arm and rib bevels keep this big box comfortable in hand, and gold EVO frets insure it won’t need a fret job for a long time—unless of course it gets played all day every day like it deserves! Brand new, but already so expressive and articulate; there’s an organic, breathing quality to the voice that makes it clear this is a living thing in your hands.

2005 Simpson GA-C, Ziricote/Redwood
Trebles have haunting overtones, very bell like and clear. Paired up with a warm midrange and bottom end thanks to the Redwood top, and throw in a few years’ music to make it sing, and the result is this wide open fingerstyle GA-C from Jason Simpson. This beauty comes to us from 2005 and has opened up handsomely, is trimmed out with Bloodwood appointments to set off the Ziricote body and Redwood top, and is outfitted with a B-Band pickup system to carry you into amplified territory. All wrapped up in a Cedar Creek case.

2012 Beardsell 3D-V, Macassar Ebony/Lutz Spruce
And now for something completely different. Al Beardsell may have never built the same guitar twice; each time we get one in the shop there’s something different and exciting going on under the hood or visually. This 2012 3D-V is a great example. Arm bevel, oval soundhole, soundport, asymmetrical neck carve, art deco rosette, flattened cutaway. Then there’s the voice. A fascinating mixture of pop and power, plus a smoothness and depth that’s quite its own thing. Beardsell’s built a fantastic fingerstyle guitar here, one which soaks up DADGAD like it was born in the tuning. Dramatically figured Macassar Ebony back and sides pair with Lutz Spruce on top, Ebony bindings throughout.

2008 Kinnaird CS Deluxe, Cocobolo/Adirondack Spruce
This beautiful Kinnaird CS Deluxe has opened up handsomely—blooming into a sweet rose with Cocobolo and Adirondack Spruce and slotted headstock, Abalone appointments, and a tasty shade top finish. Exquisite warmth characterizes the voice with a colorful dynamic range that works perfectly for fingerstyle, and mixes up great across the registers. Stephen Kinnaird brought this one to life in 2008, and the intervening years have opened it wide. Sweet and rich, with great note separation to make individual notes pop.

2021 Taylor 912ce 12-Fret, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
The Grand Concert model from the 900 Series boasts all-solid tonewoods, V-Class bracing and a rich appointment package that makes it an inspiration in both sound and visuals. The 912ce’s compact body shape lends it an inviting, intimate feel while playing, made even more comfortable by the ebony radius-style armrest and slender Taylor neck. The interior bracing scheme adds more volume and sustain to complement the warmth and articulation of the rosewood/spruce tonewoods, resulting in a balanced sound with clear definition between notes that will especially please fingerstyle players. 2012 Traugott R, Brazilian/European Spruce
This is one of a pair of R Models from Jeff Traugott’s hands, with love. Adorned with Larry Robinson inlays and sporting primo-grade Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this R Cutaway cut a striking figure with sparkling Abalone trim and Venetian Cutaways. Knife-sharp trebles with a warm and responsive middle register, and that with a focused bass response to keep the voice tight and snappy. Jeff’s guitars are equally at home with picks as with fingertips, and we couldn’t help ourselves when it came time to dip into altered tuning territory—this is an incredible DADGAD guitar. The Custom Shop folx nailed it with this 2015 D14F Martin—fantastically balanced and responsive, lively and energetic, effortless playability. Guatemalan Rosewood back and sides pair with Adirondack Spruce on top and 28-style fretboard position markers, plus open back tuners. We love the shimmer and warmth in the midrange, and the note separation and easy playability. It’s sensitive for a fingerpicking approach just as much as it’s stiff enough for a flatpick.

1999 Klein Electric
More fun than you can shake a bag of strings at—and make sure they’re double-ball-ended strings at that. This headless Klein Electric from 1999 is immensely fun, and so effortless to play. The body design orients the neck perfectly for the left hand, while balancing the neck weight such that the guitar stays right in place on your right leg, no balancing required. The pickups are a set of Joe Bardens with coil taps at the volume and tone knobs for single coil screams. Combined with a five-way switch and Steinberger tremolo, this Klein Electric gives the player an immense array of tones and textures at their fingertips.

2019 Bourgeois Championship Dreadnought, Sinker Mahogany/AT Sitka Spruce
Built for the 2019 Winter NAMM, so of course Dana Bourgeois and his team went out of their way to make this Dreadnought a showstopper. Not only that, but this is one of Dana’s Championship models—spec’d out just like the Dread Luke Lovejoy used to take first place at the 2018 Walnut Valley Flatpicking Championship with Sinker Mahogany back and sides and an Aged Tone Sitka Spruce top. That, along with torrefied brace stock and animal protein glue construction, makes for great balance across the registers and superb note definition. This is one you can really crank up the BPM on; no muddiness at high speeds here.

2008 Litchfield C600 Classical, Indian Rosewood/Cedar
Coming to us wide awake and singing form 2008, this Litchfield C600 Classical’s design comes from the Smallman style of building, making the sides extra stiff to support a thinner, and more resonant/expressive top with the assistance of carbon fiber reinforcement. Here with Cedar on top, the result is a powerful warmth and dynamic response, with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides and a Gilbert-style, 12-hole bridge. An intricate crows feet rosette, executed in green, completes the picture of a modern classical designed for concert performance with clarity, power, and definition.
