If there’s one thing that binds together all of The Tree guitars we’ve seen, it’s clarity and power. This 2019 OM from Richard Hoover and co at Santa Cruz is no exception—more so since the entire body is built with heavily quilted The Tree Mahogany! The top is braced with Adirondack Spruce, hide glue construction throughout, and Brazilian Rosewood bindings and rosette for added class. Such a beauty; you’ll want to handle this OM in raking light so you can best see the chatoyance of the woodgrain—its three dimensionality is mesmerizing.

We adore Dake Traphagen’s classicals. The man manages to coax voluminous bass response out of the same woods that offer clear and juicy trebles and an expressive midrange—this Classical from 2004 has all of that in spades. Fabulous Madagascar Rosewood back and sides paired with Cedar on top and an L.R. Baggs UST pickup with volume control in the soundhole, 650mm scale, and a completely opened up voice. This Traphagen has been played in extensively and has the marks to prove it, and is shipshape to keep on keepin’ on!

Italian luthier Gioachino Giussani has been working in the classical world for decades, and in that time he has honed his craft to a razor’s edge. This is the first of his work that we’ve seen, and we are soundly impressed by the clarity and power of this 2001 Concert Classical. Dramatically figured Indian Rosewood back and sides with (of course!) an Italian Spruce top featuring a seven fan-braced pattern and doubled back & sides—projection to spare, and trebles that are precise and round, full. Our repair team recently dressed the frets for dinner, so they’re shining like new silver dollars. 650mm scale, 54mm nut, and 60mm saddle spacing.

Kevin Caton pulls out all the stops for this brand new Sullivan model Tunnel 13 Special Edition. When a potent Tunnel 13 Redwood top is paired with Brazilian Rosewood, the result is a lushness and velvety quality that’s immediately draws you in. Excellent balance across the registers, and a smooth, bell-like treble response, make for a top shelf fingerstyle, modern playing experience. Adding to that, Kevin’s design innovations and ergonomic features further establish that contemporaneity with a Ryan-style arm bevel paired with his Bevel Port soundport/back bevel, florentine cutaway, and seven-laminated neck for added stability.
This Tunnel 13 Special Edition from Kevin Caton is phenomenal, hands down. A guitar you lose track of time in again and again, and what higher praise can we offer than that?Other keywords: fingerpicking, lutherie, 68, calton, brazilain, red wood, dyed bone

John Bogdanovich is one of the greatest Classical guitar builders on the scene right now. His guitars are uniformly spectacular, everything from build quality to tone is at the absolute peak of the craft. This 2008 Concert Classical is built from a beautiful set of Brazilian Rosewood and a perfect, even grained German Spruce top. John’s style is one of extreme refinement. From the stunning burl and handmade herringbone rosette to the tasteful colors used in the purflings. This is a guitar that commands attention when you see it. Tonally this classical has everything a concert level performer could want: clear and powerful trebles, present mids and full, boisterous basses, all with incredible balance and pianistic note separation. This is as good as it gets, a builder like John should be held to the same level as Torres and Hauser.

This is a piece of history, and it sings so sweet. New York’s own Manuel Velazquez built many of the U.S.’s finest Classical guitars from the mid 1900s all the way into the 2000s, and we’ve come across a beautiful example of his work from 1966 with this Concert Classical. Dark, dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with an amber-tinged Spruce top and Rosewood bindings. 650mm scale, 54mm nut, and a lovely playability as confirmed by our repair staff as they inspected the instrument, giving it a clean bill of health. There are some player marks on the top and neck which attest to this Velazquez having been played in handsomely in the past almost 60 years, and it responds easily to a variety of attacks. The bass register is well defined with a warm center, and the trebles pair oh so sweetly.

Here we’ve landed a great example of Thomas Humphrey’s Millenium design from 1995, rigged up with Brazilian Rosewood under Spruce, a 650mm scale, and 51mm nut. At the soundhole we have a flower mosaic rosette which offers some color, pairing nicely with the warmly aged surrounding Spruce. A full neck profile with a slight C shape, terminating at the body with the elevated fingerboard extension design ubiquitous to the Millenium. This beauty has been lovingly played in since 1995 and has the marks to prove it, and for us this helps explain the wide open, powerful voice—you only sound this good when you’ve had a lot of music pass through your strings.

We’ve got another Tunnel 13 Gold Standard from Bruce and Matt Petros in the house! Number 22 in the series, this 2013 Petros GC has a sweet voice wrapped up in a gorgeous Walnut-and-Redwood package with Pearwood trim throughout. As you probably already know, the Redwood that Bruce and Matt have acquired for these guitars came from the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Siskiyou Summit Tunnel #13, where they were originally railroad ties. With the characteristic warmth and balance of Redwood, plus the dry crackle of the Claro Walnut back and sides, this Tunnel 13 has a splendid, well-balanced voice with articulate lows and mids, making big chords sound rich and full with each string ringing clearly.
For both fingerstyle and flatpicking, the Gold Standard is comfortable and responsive–and the wider nut makes those big chords a cakewalk. Wrapped up in a Hoffee carbon fiber flight case, this powerhouse from Petros Guitars is your next favorite instrument.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, bruce petros, fingerpicking, butternut, tunnel 13 redwood, gotoh

1969 was the last year for Martin to use Brazilian Rosewood on stock models, yet this D-35 doesn’t suffer for a bottom of the barrel set. The three-piece back has a mixture of lovely figure and straight grain, and pairs up with Sitka Spruce on top and a wide open voice. Our repair staff has gone over this one tuners to tail, including a fresh neck reset, and it’s playing like a well-oiled dream.

Built in 2005 and played in since then! Wide awake and raring to go. Ready for this Maingard OM? You’d better be. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (a classic Maingard move) pairs with Italian Spruce on top, a 25.4” scale, and slim build weight of four pounds for a lightweight, responsive, agile fingerstyle machine. The OM proportions also hold up well under a flatpick, but we had the most fun taking this one into fingerstyle territory with dropped tunings—hardly surprising, given the responsiveness across the range with this Maingard. Soundhole is ringed in with a zigzag rosette and at the headstock we have gold Waverly tuners plus another spot of dramatic BRW with the headplate veneer.
All told, this 2005 Maingard OM is a well-oiled machine. We’d recommend this one to, frankly, anyone.Other keywords: south africa, lutherie, hiscox, brazilain, euro spruce, 195, fingerstyle
