2001 Ryan Mission Grand Concert, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Kevin’s Mission Grand is well known by fingerstyle players the world over. It is the design that really put Ryan guitars on the map. We’ve long been fans of the balance and clarity of the MGC; here in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. This one is well played and wide open from professional use. It’s got a few marks to prove it, and has been perfectly maintained and plays like a dream. Complete with McIntyre Feather pickup and Calton, ready for the stage!

Gather round! Our latest Brand New OM from Bevan Frost of Big Hollow Guitars has arrived. Tight flamed Koa back and sides—take a moment to appreciate that lovely figuring—pair up with Lutz Spruce on top in a gorgeous sunburst. Oil Varnish finish throughout for maximum resonance, which this Big Hollow has in spades, and Alessi tuners at the slotted headstock for an added touch of elegance. The voice is smooth and balanced, an excellent player for fingerstyle, but with enough power under the hood to hold up under a flatpick as well, thanks to the versatile nature of Lutz Spruce. Bevan’s fit and finish are fantastic; the pyramid bridge is well executed, and we love the use of Bloodwood bindings to make the sunburst and Koa pop. A bird’s beak headstock joint on Mahogany neck is the cherry on top.

Brand new and already raring to go. This Klein & Kauffman 457 is such a powerhouse, and it’s decked out with some premium woods to boot. Mouthwatering Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with Engelmann Spruce on top, a Guatemalan Rosewood neck for added sustain, Holly bindings throughout, and an upper bout soundport for a little more me in the monitors. What’s not to love? The voice is voluminous and thunderous, but maintains a crisp balance across the registers and along the fretboard that really speaks to the finest of modern lutherie. No one builds quite like Steve Klein and Steve Kauffman, and nothing sounds quite like this 457.

Kathy Wingert was the first builder we invited to make a limited edition Dream Series guitar for us. This series was inspired by ten sets of incredible Black Brazilian Rosewood that she acquired. To get the most from this special and rare Brazilian Rosewood, Kathy selected her favorite top wood, Italian Spruce, this one with some lovely bearclaw. Italian Spruce is known for it’s clarity, power and sustain. Exclusive to the Dream Series is a one-of-a-kind Geometric Rosette designed by Jimmi Wingert. This rosette, along with a full top and back border of premium Abalone, really makes the Wingert Dream Series shine. Kathy Wingert’s tone is one of our very favorites for fingerstyle players and this one, #4 of 10, is special indeed. Fat, juicy treble strings that give melodies heart and soul and big, warm bass that will make you wonder how she does it. Her passion that makes the difference.

An earlier build from Lynn Dudenbostel that’s had a few decades to open up—and open up, it has. This 000-45 (long scale) was built in 1996 with Brazilian Rosewood body and Adirondack Spruce on top, plus a well executed Abalone 45-style appointment package and 1 13/16” nut spacing. It’s a very comfortable fingerstyle guitar, and with the longscale setup it handles flatpickiing well to boot. It’s been well cared for and looks great for its age, and is more than ready for action. Plus this beauty comes wrapped up in a Calton flight case for maximum safety on those rare moments you won’t be playing it.

The world needs more guitars like this Model E from Kathy Wingert. The 2003 “California Sun” is a heartthrob with just about anything you throw its way—fingerstyle, strumming, standard pitch or wacky tunings—and it looks great while it’s doing it. Cocobolo back and sides pair up with European Spruce on top with its amber sunburst, 14 fret neck, and Abalone appointments to round it out. The voice is very, very energetic and responsive. It has dynamic range, power, and a lot of gears, equally at home for both soft playing and aggressive pieces. Great balance across the registers, paired with crisp note definition, makes for a pianistic player that really soaks up the fingerstyle goodness. We wish this one wasn’t for sale, but could stay at the shop forever. So please, take it off our hands before we pull the trigger instead.

John Slobod does it again. We’ve landed a smooth talker from 2016 that’s wide awake and crooning. This Circa 000-28 is upgraded with the crème de la crème of all tonewoods, gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood, and topped with Adirondack Spruce (sweetly opened up in the past five years for power and push). 12 fret neck (with slotted headstock) adds warmth and roundness to the trebles to match the responsive and present bottom end, plus the setup on this Circa is smooth to the touch and easy as breathing. Ivoroid bindings and tight herringbone trim, combined with a pyramid bridge, make the classic American guitar aesthetic proud.

Powerhouse with Pearl to spare! Here’s a gorgeous example of Roy McAlister’s Vintage Series OM models, decked out with a gorgeous 45-style appointment package, that’s opened up handsomely since 2006. Premium Brazilian Rosewood like the set Roy used here for the back and sides is a wonder to behold: straight grain with just enough figure to make it pop, reminiscent of prewar Martin stock, and extra stable. Adirondack Spruce on top, which has opened up nicely in the past 15 years, rounds out the basis for a classic, vintage sound. The voice is smooth and well balanced across the registers; lively string energy in the bottom end helps carry tone out and away from the body with great projection.

This is our first Kris Barnett, here from 2019, and we hope it won’t be our last. Such a beauty. Gabon Ebony body with Cedar on top (itself partially ‘bent’ and paired with an elevated fingerboard for easy playability); Spanish Cedar neck; resonant French Polishing throughout; and modern features like a two-way adjustable truss rod and bolt on neck! It’s refreshing to see contemporary designs like these cropping up in the nylon string world, offering new ways to contribute to, and elevate, the Classical repertoire.

Paulino Bernabe offers us a lovely voice and powerful bass with this Concierto model from 2002. Brazilian Rosewood body with German Spruce on top (one of our favorite combinations), plus a 650mm scale and 50mm nut for a familiar, easy setup. This one’s opened up handsomely since 2002, and feels lively and energetic in hand. Consistent note definition and separation across the registers, with a little extra kick to the bass that helps this one push out and fill the concert hall.

We just love Max Spohn’s contemporary flair, his expressive voicing, and great eye for tonewood. Even more, we love collaborating with Max on custom builds for our clients like this bespoke 00 12-Fret. Lovely figuring across the Birdseye Maple back and sides (matching up with the headstock veneers); Swiss Moonspruce on top with an offset geometric rosette and Ebony bindings—plus a sweet cardinal inlaid at the heelcap. Brass Scheller tuners round it out.
The voice is a delight. Small body roundness to the trebles, and there’s a meaty midrange (much more than we usually find on smaller bodies) that really fills it out. Note definition is crisp and smooth, with great balance across the registers. In short, it’s a helluva lot of tone from a petite package. It’s headed to its eager new home now! 2005 McGill Picasso, Cocobolo Rosewood/European Spruce
A Classical guitar with modern sensibilities: our 2005 McGill Picasso turns heads and tunes ears right out of the case. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides are here paired with a European Spruce top and Koa bindings and Paul’s dropped shoulder cutaway. The effect, when combined with the offset position markers, elliptical rosette, and open headstock, is to stand out from the nylon string crowd with an exciting flair. Elsewhere, McGill’s Picasso model offers some of the creature comforts of more progressively set up crossover guitars, like a slim 1.95” nut and cutaway, while maintaining the depth of response and color of a traditional classical guitar. The figured Cedar neck has a U-shaped profile that will feel instantly familiar, and Paul’s coaxed the setup into slinky territory for effortless playability.
Our McGill Picasso is the sort of Classical that’s not afraid to make a statement, and it backs it up with a rich and enveloping voice.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, nylon-string, crossover classical, classical music, nashville, fingerstyle

Smoothness, a clear fundamental, and balance across the registers are the defining traits of this 2010 Sexauer FT-14. The bass register’s warmth and presence pairs up perfectly with the precision and definition of the trebles, in a way that gives the voice a chocolatey richness that also exhibits great note separation. This is sometimes referred to as the piano effect, and it especially comes out with big, lush chords here. It’s a fabulous fingerstyle instrument. And at 14 1/2” across the lower bout and 3.5lbs, this FT-14 is also an incredibly comfortable guitar. The setup is correspondingly slinky smooth to boot. We enjoyed taking this one down to DADGAD, as much as we enjoyed it C9, Standard, and beyond. Bruce has a way of building guitars that offer a wide tonal palette for different applications, and we’re moore than excited that this Sexauer is no exception. On the tonewoods front, the back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood, with Italian Spruce on top and Maple purflings. Additionally, the bridge, fingerboard, and headstock veneer are also Brazilian Rosewood for added elegance. This 2010 Sexauer FT-14 is damn near perfect, in our opinion.

More of these, please! This D12 from the fine team at Santa Cruz is a wonderfully dynamic guitar, equally at home with fingerstyle and flatpicking. The voice has great balance and power, plus a meaty top end that really pumps out and away from the soundhole. It’s still pretty new from 2019, but already the voice is rich and open—especially impressive considering the Adirondack Spruce top, which is still opening up! 12 frets to the body, on a figured Maple neck, warms everything up for added sweetness, and this beauty was custom ordered with a 1 7/8” nut for an extra comfortable playing experience for the lefthand. The body boasts a lovely set of flitch-sawn Brazilian Rosewood with dramatic figure and dark brown coloration throughout. Ivoroid bindings, plus herringbone trim, round it all out.
