2010 Southwell A, Brazilian Rosewood & German Spruce
Gary Southwell’s A Series cuts a fine figure in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce with a voice that’s equal parts elegance and energy. Loaded with unique features, from the cantilevered neck and Smallman armrest to offset tuners and Florentine Cutaway, this A Series is a deliciously fresh take on the nylon string guitar.
Gary has only built a handful of Brazilian Rosewood A Series, so our #265 from 2010 is a rarity even among its brothers and sisters—and what gorgeous Rosewood it is! Rich, brick-red hues and a little bit of dramatic grain. The German Spruce top is satin finished for maximum resonance. The setup is delightfully smooth for allegro passages, and the combination of cutaway and cantilevered fretboard make for easy access to the entirety of the board. Powerful sonority in the bass response, and the mids have some added punch to make for lush and colorful arrangements.
Unfettered by convention, the Southwell A Series offers a timeless voice to contemporary music, and a vibrant flair to the traditional.

A Parlor done right: our 2014 Froggy Bottom P12. We can describe the voice in three words: smooth, velvety, and clear. In spite of its slender dimensions, this P12 has a lot of volume packed away, and it takes minimal effort to access that projection. An easy player for sure. Bastogne Walnut back and sides with some figure, Adirondack Spruce on top (a Froggy Bottom staple), bound in Curly Maple and adorned with an Abalone frog at the slotted headstock.
The overtone levels are just perfect to give extra lushness to feather the trebles without overpowering the voice. This Froggy is four years old, but looks practically brand new; it’s like getting a new Froggy without the new Froggy price tag—a smart choice for a sharp Parlor package.

Now that’s what a Dreadnought is supposed to sound like! This incredible beauty from John Slobod comes to us from 2003, serial number 0004. We’re happy to report the past 15 years have treated it well. John’s trebles are three parts glass and two parts razor; clean clarity that cuts through the mix. The Cocobolo back and sides are straight-grained and chocolate-dark, and we think that’s part of the reason the bass response is so rich yet balanced. Of course, Adirondack Spruce on top with a light sunburst. Slobod’s guitars are some of our all-time favorites, and this 2003 Dread is right up there at the top of the list.
The V neck flattens out a bit as you approach the heel block, and elsewhere an 28-style appointment package sets off the vibrant hues of the Cocobolo and burst. Waverly open back tuners in true Americana fashion, and great playing shape from toe to tip. This is the kind of Circa you write home to the folks about. It’s a game changer.

Steve Fischer’s spin on the nylon string crossover dips its pen in the company ink of both flattops and classicals for exceptionally playability and responsiveness. Our 2015 Moderna is done up in European Maple and Engelmann Spruce, features a slight fretboard radius and cutaway as creature comforts, and is bound in Rosewood and purfling for an elegant presentation.
The Euro Maple body lends a hint of dryness to the upper mids and trebles that really helps them cut through the mix, while the bass retains a balance between warmth and clarity to round out the voice. The nut is wider than average for a steel string at 1 29/32”, but not as wide as a traditional classical—this means those complex chord shapes are that much easier to fret without added string buzzes from overlapping fingers. A trim punching weight of 3lb 8oz makes this a crossover guitar that’s difficult to put down, period.

Elegance defined: our latest Preston Thompson Dream Series. This 2018 000-14BA is nothing short of incredible, with its gorgeous Martin-style Adirondack Spruce shade top and one of our own sets of Brazilian Rosewood. The finish is buffed to a mirror sheen so crisp you can see 12 seconds into the future, when you actually put the guitar in your hands and put fingers to strings. We’ll call that love at first sight. If this PKT has a sweet spot on the fingerboard, it’s every single fret.
An excellent companion for delving into open tunings like DADF#AD, or for everything you’ve ever learned in standard. A light touch yields clarity and color; dig in and you’ll find crisp depths in the bass register and a rollicking projection. Short scale with a 14-fret neck means easy playability without sacrificing power, and the setup is an exercise in effortlessness.
Ready for a cut above the rest? Our Preston Thompson 000-14BA Dream Series is the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Michel Pellerin’s got incredible tricks up his sleeve, and he pulled out more than a few for this brand new Presentation grade Grand Auditorium. So where to begin? On woods alone this guitar excels. A gorgeous set of Cocobolo make up the back and sides with just a hint of sapwood at the center seam, and a silky set of Sitka Spruce on top. African Blackwood bridge, Cocobolo rosette and tuner buttons, mirror-sheen and responsively thin Polyurethane finish. Intricate Abalone and MOP flowers and vines inlaid into the fretboard, scalloped nut, arm bevel and Ebony bindings—it’s a challenge to do anything more than stare when you pull this guitar out of the case.
Brand new but already a livewire, this Pellerin GA has a very energetic response and clean balance from string to string and note to note. If you like slick playability, the neck carve and setup will be a dream come true. It’s a big box with a 16 inch lower bout, but Michel coaxes a delicious blend of warmth and articulation out of the voice that’s superb for fingerstyle arrangements and flatpicked pieces alike.
What’s one word to wrap up all this goodness? Incredible.

This Petros is immensely satisfying to play, especially if you’re of the fingerstyle persuasion and you need crisp note separation and string-to-string balance. Built in 2010, this GC is still quite new, but has already opened up a lot thanks to the loving ministrations of its previous owner (he wore down the original EVO frets, so we just refretted it with EVO for another round of music). Tasmanian Blackwood, tightly flamed, make up the back, sides, and headstock veneer, and you’ll find Italian Spruce with a faintly vintage yellow toner on top.
While this Petros needed new frets, the rest of the guitar is in superb shape. We’re happy to report the previous owner has diligently maintained its nearly new condition at the same time that they put in some long hours opening up the voice. This Petros strikes an impressive balance between individual note definition and a splay of overtones in the mids and trebles, so fingerstyle arrangements play out in full, crisp technicolor. The balance across registers is similarly articulate, and this beau takes to D tunings like a duck to water.

Our latest Bashkin acquisition is a gorgeous, like new OM that comes to us from 2017. Still has that new guitar smell! Or maybe that’s just the Lucky Strike Redwood top. A black-silked Ziricote set makes up the back and sides, and there’s Michael’s lief headstock and Amber position markers that double as side dots to complete the picture.
Already the voice has the easy richness and projection of a much older guitar, and it has a smooth response across the fretboard. Appointed in Michael’s trademark style, the elegant headstock lief motif and compass-style rosette are a fitting complement to the guitar’s refined, crisp voice. The cherry on top that is a soundport completes the picture.

Wayne Henderson is a luthier who needs little introduction, known as he is the world over for building some of the finest pre-war style guitars. This D-28 in Red Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is the bluegrass wet dream. All the power to punch through an instrument-heavy jam session, or take on the softer side and it fingerpicks beautifully. The voicing Wayne achieves, as always, is lovely. It is warm and has a great boom chuck. Henderson guitars never hang around the shop long, so get this one while it’s still here!

Straight out of far, far, far left field, we’ve got a steampunk distortion provocateur affectionately dubbed Miss Blues from electric guitar whiz kid Leo Lospennato. With a built-in knob to dial in distortion from plain jane’s “none,” all the way to “nuclear,” it’s clear that with a twitch of the dial your tone will plunge from the clean and lofty into the depths of chaotic distortion. Fun, much?
The Alder body is finished with vintage and steampunk flair, comes with a piezo bridge pickup to supplement the Dimarzio Bluesbucker (flip up the pickguard to access the battery compartment!). With a piece this unique, your tone (to say nothing of visual flair) is guaranteed to stand apart from the crowd. They’ll want to stay back, lest Miss Blues devour them in a distortion fugue!

Sweet trebles and smooth playability are the name of the game when it comes to our 2016 CX from Tony Vines. The classic combo of Indian Rosewood and Cedar gives the bass and mids an extra warm boost, and the voice overall has a lively energy to it that translates well into altered tunings. Tony’s CX design nudges the bridge to a sweeter spot on the top, giving the player extra color in the trebles that’s great for fingerstyle compositions and singer songwriter accompaniment.
This beauty is in excellent shape: nary a scratch on her. There’s also an arm bevel and soundport for creature comfort, and stylish hardshell case for protection that looks good, and keeps the CX looking good too. If you like slinky setups, this 2016 Vines CX has a delightful neck that plays very easily, even with a 25.5” scale. Available now!

Luthiers Bernie Lehmann and Jeff Cole have teamed up to create a unique offering: a tribute to Louis Panormo’s “Spanish Style” guitars from 1830s London. Constructed with modern techniques and materials at hand, this Panormo marries the traditional–like Brazilian Rosewood sides and a bees wax finished top–with the contemporary–see the graphite saddle. “I want people to be unsure if it is old or new when the first look at it,” says Lehmann. Of course, it’s a little bit of both. This Panormo features solid Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a Spanish heel with Panorama-style fan bracing.
The Sitka Spruce top is finished to a matte sheen with beeswax and adorned by a pearl-inlaid bridge and rosette. Brazilian Rosewood for the fretboard, itself adorned with EVO gold frets, mated beautifully to the ebonised Mahogany neck. Right down to the hand-turned Mammoth Ivory endpin and strap button, the attention to detail by Lehmann & Cole has paid off handsomely–and the voice is sweet, balanced, and surprisingly loud. For the Civil War buff or Early Romantic Classical musician, this Panormo is a one-of-a-kind right up your alley. And it comes with a custom coffin case from Lehmann & Cole, dark-green and burgundy like the original!

The next closest thing to holding the 1700s in your hands: Bernie Lehmann’s copy of the 1780 Renault & Chatelain guitar. You can see the original at the Musée de la Musique in Paris, France, but of course they don’t let you take it off the wall for a strum. Lucky for you, Bernie’s managed to create one that you can take home for yourself. Curly Maple back and sides with tight grain, Engelmann Spruce top finished in beeswax, with the final frets inlaid directly into the upper bout.
In Bernie’s own words, “This is a fine example of a transitional instrument between the five course, double strung Baroque guitar, and the modern 6-string guitar. It retains the elongated body and flush fingerboard, with the top extending over the body joint of a Baroque guitar, and the larger bridge and six single strings of the Romantic era guitar.” Bernie’s made sure this piece can survive the test of time, so you’ll find graphite embedded in the neck for reinforcement, and a bolt-on heel. The body is finished with catalyzed spirit varnish, and the tuners are actually 4:1 geared tuners in a friction tuner shape. Modern convenience, period correct look!
For the recreation of historical guitars and beyond, you’re hard-pressed to find a better builder than Bernie Lehmann. His Renault & Chatelain is not one to miss!
