A thing of beauty is a Monteleone. We are fortunate to have acquired an exquisite sample of John’s masterwork that’s been kept in excellent condition since its birth in 1998: a Radio Flyer in flamed Red Maple and Adirondack Spruce. 17 inches across the lower bout, 3 inches deep at the sides, gently radiused back and sides, African Ebony tailpiece, bridge, and pickguard, 1 13/16” nut—the dressings of archtop royalty. Bound in Red Maple, and with a Red Maple neck, this Monteleone reminds us just how beautiful flamed Maple can be, and John hand-rubbed Nitrocellulose finish has adopted a honey amber patina to bring the Adirondack and Maple together.
In spite of a generous lower bout, this archtop is built light and airy, and its voice lines up accordingly. We were delighted to find trebles which absolutely sang, and meshed smoothly with an overall middle register emphasis that lent the tone an simultaneously crisp and woody flavor. John describes the sound of individual notes on an archtop as articulate bubbles, and we find the description fitting: there’s a well-defined pop that separates each note and keeps solos ringing and chords clear. With a gentle fingerstyle touch, the Radio Flyer could purr; dig in with a pick to accentuate an agile, airy response. A colorful splash of treble overtones bloom when played softly, keeping the voice clean and lively even when quiet.
In short, this is one of the finest archtop guitars we’ve ever laid hands or eyes on. It’s an honor to offer a piece of functional art of this calibre from John Monteleone.

At a glance, the Brazilian-and-German–Spruce Traugott looks so natural as to have always been there, cradled in your hands. In the bass, trebles, and everywhere in between the voice flows from the soundhole as easy as breathing. Some great guitars have a big, flashy personality–this Traugott R achieves as much, if not more, in a refined package that belies an elegantly open voice underneath.

You gotta love that vintage guitar smell–decades of good tunes under the hood mixed with a little blood, sweat, and tears. This 1942 Gibson Mahogany J-45 is a beast from yesterday! One of the loudest Banner J-45s we’ve had in the shop, this Gibson has the iconic Louisville Slugger neck and a killer woody tone that really speaks to its impressive age.
There’s more vintage mojo at work here than you can swing a baseball bat, or this Gibson Banner neck, at. By all appearances, the neck has never been reset, but there’s still lots of life left to the saddle height and it’s set up as a loud strummer right now. For such a big body, the weight is surprisingly light. The singer songwriter will love the volume and woody response, especially if you like to croon Townes Van Zandt or Steve Earl tunes. Outfitted with an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup, this vintage Banner J works further miracles on stage, too!

Now we could say that we have gotten lucky but we know better, Froggy Bottom only know how to build exceptional guitars. The whole DG crew would have a Froggy Bottom guitar if they could! This a 2008 H-12 Deluxe model in Cocobolo Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. As is always the case, this guitar has gorgeous tone, it is rich and full from bass to treble with surprising volume. there is nothing not to like here, we promise. Playability is smooth with a soft V neck profile and twelve frets to the body. Perfection.

This Baritone is the guitar equivalent of a 20oz porterhouse steak: at first glance it seems like too much, but after the first bite you know it’s a perfect fit. We don’t know what Marc Beneteau’s been feeding his regular guitars to make them grow up to be such impressive baritones, but the results are hard to miss. Juicy, fat trebles. Bass response with some meat on its bones. Sustain so prolonged you have to chase it away with a stick.
Marc put together this 2007 powerhouse with a shorter (in Baritone land) 27” scale and his M body (16 1/8” lower bout) in a Macassar Ebony and Sitka Spruce package—the Ebony and scale warm up the voice and keep it articulate, while the Sitka makes sure all those beefy overtones project well beyond the soundhole. There’s also a Laskin-style Arm Bevel and a soundport in the upper bout, and a McIntyre Feather pickup with which to make a splash into amplified territory. Add to Compare1996 Ron Pinkham LP Master 20th Anniversary Brazilian/German
Maybe it’s the two decades’ worth of opening up, or the thin French Polish gloss, perhaps the flattened C profile neck or German Spruce top—whatever it is, this 20th Anniversary LP from Ron Pinkham is an intensely resonant guitar. This beautiful example of French Polished Brazilian Rosewood is excellent for the fingerstylist who plays across the spectrum of altered tunings, but it holds up handsomely to a flatpack as well. Just pluck the open strings and let this baby ring. Now that’s sustain!
The trebles have a potent powder coat of overtones that really dress up the upper register and fill in the rest of the voice with some sparkling colors. Ron reverses the body taper with his LP model, making the upper bout deeper than the lower, which helps accentuate the balance and response. Visually, this Pinkham doesn’t slouch. There’s some gasp-inducing figure across the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, mosaic rosette with Classical flair, and intricately carved headstock. The neck profile is what you’d get if you married a Classical D shape with a typical C profile: the cheeks are shallow but delicately curved (and quite comfortable on the left hand). Pretty, and with a purpose most resonant, the 1996 Pinkham 20th Anniversary LP is the powerhouse all-around excellent guitar you’ve been looking for.

In the world of high-end lutherie, Michi Matsuda’s work stands alone. Here in our little corner of paradise, among the Somogyis and Traugotts, Manzers and Monteleones, this Matsuda M1 manages to stand apart from this singular crowd. It’s not just in the curve of the upper bout into the waist from the Florentine cutaway, or the asymmetrically grooved heel carve (the thumb slipping casually into place when fretting along the fingerboard extension). There are other forces at work than the purely visual. As mesmerizing as is Michi’s sense of line and curve manifesting across the segmented top inlays or headstock veneer, or the luster of the Brazilian Rosewood back, this M1 betrays deeper secrets than those found by sight or touch.
When the string are plucked, that’s magic. The voice transitions smoothly between subtle and triumphant, balancing the bell-like trebles with a middle register articulate and precise, and a bass response bearing just a hint of warmth to round out the bottom edge. No matter the tuning, this Matsuda remains clear, nuanced, and invigorating. Michi coaxed the extreme edge of energy out of the Italian Spruce top with his honed voicing techniques. Carving the neck profile into a shape as intimate a lover’s touch, Michi made an instrument which plays as effortlessly as breathing.
It would appear that Matsuda has mastered the ability to reduce Rosewood, Spruce, and Cedar to their natural essences, and to marry them together into a harmony not unlike love. We were transfixed from the first pluck. We still are.

What could be finer than quality time with a Wayne Henderson guitar? Answer: quality time with 000-28 #51, the guitar Wayne built before his personal guitar, D-18 #52. Indian Rosewood and Spruce, Wayne’s name emblazoned across the thistle headstock inlay, and his curving bridge pin layout, match up smooth as you please with the traditional Martin-style herringbone appointments, Grained Ivoroid binding, and MOP diamonds across the fingerboard.
Around the block a time or two, this Hendo beau from 1978 is in excellent shape—all that time has not been wasted, either. The kind of quick response you’d expect from vintage, played-in guitars? We’re happy to say that yes, this 000 has more than opened up, and the 25.4” scale and soft-V neck is a delight for picks or fingertips.
We all love a good Henderson Dreadnought for volume and projection, but this lil 000-28 has a bit of the “little dog, big bark” complex, which is to say it’s as comfy as a lapdog but prone to frequent bouts of rather loud howling when you dig in for a bluesy solo.
We’d love to keep this beauty for ourselves, but that would hardly be fair to all you loyal Henderson lovers! Give us a ring for an in-hand description of the 000 Wayne built just before his personal D-18!

We have had the immense good fortune to have had quite a few Henderson guitars come through our shop, they don’t hang around long, but we sure enjoy them while they are here. Each Henderson that comes along is a gem and has something special to say about Wayne and his passion for the craft, but this one in particular has a little something extra special built in to it, and we love it. This is a D-42 model in highly figured Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. Wayne added a few special appointments to this guitar like abalone purfling on the fingerboard, floral headstock inlay and etched gold Waverly tuners. True to form this dread has power and headroom to spare, plenty of bass and round trebles to be had here. Another fine guitar from the Wizard of Rugby.

How to describe the experience of playing this 2015 BRS from Dake Traphagen? It’s something akin to that overwhelming sense of warmth and satisfaction after a delicious dinner with friends. The voice is replete with rich, flowing overtones and trebles that hang in the air like ripe fruits. Traphagen French Polished this Classical from tailblock to tuners to a mirror shine that really brings out the colors in the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and European Spruce top. Gold Graff tuners operate like the well-oiled machines that they are, and the gentle contour of the D neck profile? Like running your fingers through your hair after a good brushing.
We’re quite impressed by Dake’s wood stash: this is prime real estate in the Brazilian Rosewood market, and the burled rosette and Rosewood bridge complement the dark and creamy Euro Spruce top.
