2008 Hoffman 00 Flamed Mesquite/Spruce
This guitar is a stellar example of the work of Minnesotan luthier, Charles Hoffman. The elegant 00 design showcases an unusual and exquisitely beautiful Flamed Mesquite back that is easily one of the most beautiful examples in existence. The 00 has a slim neck that is super easy to navigate, offering up tones that are wonderfully well balanced–and for a guitar of this size, the projection and volume are extraordinary. Featuring a 25 11/32 inch scale, the Hoffman 00 is 1 13/16 inches at the nut. It comes with the original hardshell case. The thinner body of this guitar not only makes it much more comfortable to hold, but it also evens out the bass response of the Spruce top, making it much more balanced.

Brand spankin’ new but already explosively loud and rich, this 2016 SJ from Michael Keller is the new kid on the block at DG, and everyone wants to be his friend. One of our Dream Series guitars, this “Rose“ was made with one of Paul’s personal sets of Brazilian Rosewood (and what a set it is, chocolate-dark and straight-grained) and an Adirondack Spruce top–a deadly combination in Keller’s SJ body. With the added soundport, all the Brazilian richness is broadcasted straight to the player’s ear, while the balanced and crisp trebles help round out the guitar’s voice, itself even and articulate.
The setup is glass-smooth and low for fingerstylists, and this Keller SJ handles D tunings like a champ, and as it continues to open up it’s going to sound even better (if you could believe it)!

Fingerstyle guitars are definitely one of our specialties, and we’ve spent a lot of time with different scale lengths, wood combinations, body sizes, and nut widths. From those years of study, we’ve formed a mental image of what an ideal fingerstyle instrument needs in order to blow us away. This 2006 Beauregard OM–a living example of that ideal. Mario paired a dark-grained set of African Blackwood with Red Cedar, a newer pairing that luthiers are just now experimenting with, and the result is oceanic in its depth, and atmospheric in its clarity.
The bass strings have a fundamentally rich tonality, perfectly balanced with the other registers, which lends the entire voice an enveloping array of colors. The setup is glass-smooth with a 1 25/32″ nut and low action for effortless playing–and with an aggressive attack or gentle touch, this Beauregard’s voice is teeming with energy and sustain. To describe this guitar as lush in lowered tuning would be an understatement: played in DADGAD, this Beauregard has a profound resonance and harmonic palette.

On the long road of playing music, it’s inevitable that one day you’re going to yearn for something different to rekindle your practice and enliven your style. This 2004 Prairie State Jumbo built by John Greven might be that perfect side road to start trekking down–between the swooping curves, gorgeous woods, and thunderous voice, this guitar has a lifetime of exciting tunes to offer. Just look at the Lacewood used for the back and sides! You’ll be hard-pressed to find many guitars with such dramatically-figured wood (this is one of the only sets of Lacewood that John’s been able to get his hands on in his many years in the business), or with Lacewood’s combination of Rosewood richness with a twist of Mahogany-esque dry clarity.
Any lowered tuning under the sun is fair game for this creature; we tried everything down to Cadd9 and the bass notes remained crisp and pronounced. This Jumbo is based on the Larson Brothers’ Prairie State Jumbos (hence the 17″ lower bout), and the shallow sides add extra definition to the voice, making this a prime candidate for fingerstylists (not to mention the 1 13/16″ nut for easy left hand tricks). Ready for a huge voice with impeccable balance? This one’s for you.

Support for Puerto Rico has been skyrocketing, but they’re going to continue to need help for a long time to go. This week we’ve got two beauties on the block: our 1987 Franklin Prairie State and our 2007 Charis Dream Series SJ.
As before, a portion of the proceeds will go the the United For Puerto Rico fund spearheaded by Puerto Rico’s first lady, Beatriz Rosselló. They’ve been able to donate over 36,000 units of water, almost 11,000 units of food—but much of the island is still without reliable power and water. As sweet as a banana split, but rich as cheesecake, this 2007 Charis SJ has all the toppings to make any fingerstylist happy: glassy low action, articulate string-to-string balance, and resounding basses paired with bell-like trebles. This is number five of ten guitars that Bill Wise built exclusively for us as a part of our Dream Series, so we were able to pick out a fabulous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and an Italian Spruce top for added creaminess to the voice.
The low end is warm and very present, but with a well-defined edge that contributes an enveloping quality to your arrangements. With a few years under its belt, this Charis has opened up nicely, and responds well to even a delicate touch. If you’re a fan of altered tunings, you’ll be well served by this one, especially if Celtic stylings are more to your liking.

This astonishing Buscarino Cabaret was originally custom built for a lucky customer of ours overseas, but has returned to our shores after six years’ sabbattical in pristine condition. John’s Cabaret is the ultimate Crossover Nylon String guitar for players with a Jazz background. The arched Tasmanian Black Acacia back and sides (in addition to being strikingly flamed) provide resounding clarity to the low-end, and the Cedar top helps to warm up the tone across the registers.
Featuring Snakewood appointments across the instrument, from the bindings to the fretboard and bridge, this guitar is jaw-droppingly gorgeous–and that’s not including the custom flower petals soundport on the upper bout! Clearly, this is an instrument which deserves equal praise for its appearance, playability, and rich, complex tone.

At a touch, this 2014 McConnell bursts into life. We’ve come to expect Jordan’s guitars to have such rich tonality, but every time another one comes our way it’s like hearing music for the first time. With an understated elegance of style, this SJ marries Brazilian Rosewood, Moonspruce, Ebony, Mahogany, and Stainless Steel frets into an instrument which can rumble and roll, whisper and shout, with equal ease. Everyone wants a guitar which works well for flatpicking and fingerstyle, but such a guitar is rather hard to come by in our experience. This McConnell, however, might have won the lottery for a balanced, dynamic voice which does just that, performing flawlessly for both approaches. Fingerstyle arrangements in altered tunings are rich and articulate, and the same tune will remain articulate and balanced under a flatpick! The basses are particularly clear and present, and blend beautifully with the other registers to form a voice with pianistic separation of notes, no matter where on the fretboard you happen to be playing.

Just when we thought our day couldn’t get better, this 2014 Kostal Jumbo strolled into the shop and taught us all what a Jumbo guitar can really sound like. This instrument is incredibly close to being the perfect guitar: from the desirably straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce to the flawless finish and glass-smooth setup, Jason Kostal went above and beyond the call of duty to create a Jumbo unique and powerful enough to bear his name. Played in a variety of tunings, the voice of this Kostal remains the same, teeming with profound bass notes and a panoply of overtones in the middle and upper registers. The treble strings in particular have a springy, energetic response that lends themselves to brightening up your fingerstyle arrangements.
Now we’ve seen many instruments over the years in wonderful condition, but this Jumbo might take the cake: there’s practically no evidence of any scratches or dings, and the action is delightfully smooth and effortless. Of course we have high expectations for anything that comes out of Jason’s shop, but this Jumbo blew us away–and what’s more, it’s the first Jumbo Jason ever built under his own label! You can find this exact guitar on his site to represent Jason’s Jumbo design. And, wrapped up in a Hoffee carbon fiber flight case, this Jumbo will remain in such a flawless state for years to come.

Taylor guitars are known for their surgically-precise fit and finish, they’re clear tone, and effortless playability–and this 2004 Dreadnought is here to prove it! Decked out in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce, this Taylor 510-CE-19 isn’t your run-of-the-mill Taylor Dread: featuring a short scale (at 24 7/8″) and 14-fret neck, this guitar has an extra dose of sweetness poured over the dry Mahogany projection, and is even easier to play than a regular Taylor. We ran this guitar through its Bluegrass paces to great effect with a flatpick, but we found that with a thumbpick and some gravel in your voice, this Taylor made an excellent Blues guitar, with a punchy tone and crisp low end that sounds delicious with some palm damping and medium attack. Warm, punchy, and loud, this Taylor 510-CE-19 is a dynamic Dreadnought that’s equally equipped for fingerstyle or flatpicking styles.

Small but fierce, this Santa Cruz Firefly from 2009 is an excellent addition to anyone’s collection. In addition to having the smooth playability for which Santa Cruz guitars are famous, this little bottle rocket also has some pretty explosive projection and trebles with an extra toothy bite! Old Time tunes or Blues licks sound particularly impressive on the Firefly, and the Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with a Red Cedar top, help flesh out the voice to include some rich overtones in the bass register.
Conveniently-sized for travel, this Santa Cruz nevertheless has a surprisingly loud voice, and manages to avoid the plunky pitfalls that most guitars of this size suffer from.

This is a Dreadnought’s Dreadnought: a 2004 Martin D-41 in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce! In superb condition, this Martin features the D-41 Abalone package, consisting of top trim, rosette, headstock inlay, and fretboard markers. A sharp-dressed guitar for sure, this D-41 has the tone to back up its visual flair, with a huge, rumbling voice that’s rich and opened up.
The bass is 100% Dreadnought with lots of punch and a well-defined edge, and the setup is optimized for flatpicking with a crisp, easy string feel that’s easy on the hands. Putting this guitar through its Bluegrass paces, we found the projection to be fierce without turning into a muddy wash, even when driven hard. The trebles possess a subtle array of overtones that help fill out the voice and lend a little extra color to your solos. Complete with an undersaddle pickup and Martin molded hardshell case, this D-41 is ready for your next gig, or porch session, or airport jam.

Smooth as butter and sweet as sin, this 2000 Custom Dreadnought from Roy Noble is a sight for sore eyes (and sore hands!). Adirondack Spruce top, paired with a three-piece Cocobolo-and-Quilted-Maple back, lends this Dread profound clarity, and an easy richness in the lower and middle registers.
With frets freshly leveled, crowned, and polished by our very own repair staff, this Noble neck has a silk-smooth setup, and can offer an impressive amount of projection, even by Dreadnought standards, without the need for an aggressive attack. Flatpicked Bluegrass tunes are rich and creamy, or if Blues is more to your liking the snappy bass strings have plenty of heft to fill out your arrangements. Over 15 years old, this Noble has opened up nicely, and is only going to get better with time–if you’re looking for that Dreadnought sound in a more easily playable package that can also handle delicate styles, this Noble Dread is just the thing.

Masaru Kohno was widely regarded as one of the finest builders of concert Classicals, and our experience with his work will definitely reinforce that reputation. This particular Classical is a 1973 vintage, with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a tight-grained Cedar top, and has one of the sweetest, most opened-up voices we’ve heard in a Classical in some time–thanks in no small part to the 660mm long scale setup!
The tone is balanced, with bass notes that are rich and articulate, and the setup is glass smooth and easy on the hands. This #15 model Kohno responds beautifully to both a light touch to a more aggressive attack, and provides consistent projection even with the subltest adagio. The bass notes exude a dry tone that allows them to cut through the mix, complementing the warmth of the middle register. This Kohno has seen many years of great music, and it’s got many more years still to come.

We get vintage Martins through our shop all the time, so we’re well-acquanted with that old-school opened-up sound, and there’s a palpable difference compared to newer Martins. This D-45GE, however, offers all the rich, explosive tone of a vintage instrument with only a few years to its name! Modeled after a 1937 D-45 down to the Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Adirondack Spruce top, this 2001 D-45GE is a piece-for-piece recreation of one of man’s greatest guitars.
Whether you’re a fingerstylist of a flatpicker, playing Traditional, Bluegrass, or Jazz, this Martin is a finely-honed tool capable of matching you note for note with consistent projection across all six strings. The bass is warm and enveloping, perfectly balanced with the other registers. Under even a delicate touch, this D-45GE lights up like fireworks on July 4th, with sweet treble overtones hanging in the air like smoke from the mortars. In true vintage style, this Martin has a modified “V” neck and a glass-smooth setup for easy playability, and a 1 3/4″ nut.
All of that is to say, this 2001 Martin D-45GE is a marvel of tone, aesthetics, and vintage vibe–the worthy decendent of a living legend.
