2003 Ryan Nightingale East Indian/Sitka
We get some truly amazing instruments that pass through our showroom, but only a handful of those guitars hooks us with an emotional response. This 2003 Ryan Nightingale Grand Soloist is one of those few instruments which, from aesthetics to tone, pulls something out of the player that they didn’t know they had. Fingerstyle guitarists, we’re talking to you.
Providing a rich, full-figured presence from the bass strings to your arrangements, and pairing that with treble overtones like bells, this Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce Nightingale has the ability to transform the simple into the grand, and the epic into the elegant. Played in lowered tunings, you can feel the pulse of the low end thick in your gut, but the setup is so glass-smooth that the experience of playing this Ryan is an excercise in effortlessness. Each string is rendered in vibrant color, and is perfectly balanced with its neighbors, rendering the voice complex, but surgically balanced. Add an L.R. Baggs iBeam pickup to the mix, and a Calton flight case with Colorado Case Cover, and you’ll want for nothing. This, friends, is the sort of guitar you’ll carry with you for a lifetime.

Here, Marty Lanham’s done a wonderful job of blending the warm presense of a 12-fret neck with a Slope Shoulder Dreadnought body for added depth and sustain. This 2001 Dreadnought has a rich, colorful bass that rolls out of the guitar like the rumble of an old Chevy, so if you’re ready to let the top down, this guitar is ready to hit the road for the nearest Bluegrass or Old Time jam. Flatpickers will love the sheer hugeness of the voice, and all you fingerpicking songwriters can rely on the sweet warmth of the 12-fret design to lend extra color to your songs with the Adirondack Spruce top. Looking for a smooth-playing Indian Rosewood Dreadnought with the articulation and playability of a much smaller guitar? Look no further; your ride has arrived.

The closer you get to perfection, the harder it is to improve, is it not? If that’s the case, then how was Lance McCollum able to get so close to perfection with this guitar, and make it look effortless? Combining the rippling Fiddleback Claro Walnut back and sides with Curly Redwood, McCollum gave this GA a voice with butter-smooth warmth across the trebles, and a punchy middle register which begs for a fingerstylist’s ministrations.
Responsive to the lightest touch, this deep-bodied GA offers delicate treble overtones and rich, haunting bass notes to fill out your arrangements and lend new color to old tunes. Playing this guitar is an excercise in weightlessness: the build is lightweight, the neck profile and setup so smooth and glassy as to practically play itself, and the projection is effortless and expansive. Do yourself a favor and find a way to come play this McCollum–you won’t be disappointed.
Add to Compare2000 Nashville Guitar Co. Dreadnought Quilted Mahogany/German
Loud and brash as the Fourth of July, this Dreadnought from Marty Lanham’s Nashville Guitar Company is a sound cannon fit to knock you flat on your feet–so we recommend first playing this Dread while seated. Combining the classic punch and drive of Mahogany (and what gorgeous Quilted Mahogany is this!) with a German Spruce top for maximum silkiness, you won’t find a bad note across the length of the fretboard.
The banjo players at your Bluegrass session better be ready, because this Dreadnought means business; they might be out of a job, soon. In addition, this Dreadnought has a hearty C-profile neck that’s easy on the left hand, and traditional pre-War aesthetics from the bone through-saddle to the Grained Ivoroid binding and MOP snowflakes on the fretboard, to provide the ultimate in traditional American tone and design.

1957 was a good year for the folks at Gibson–and this J-50 is here to prove it. We’re looking at a dynamite Dreadnought here, with more dry, hearty Mahogany punch than you can shake a fist full of picks at. With an excellently opened-up Spruce top for projection, and a smooth C profile neck, this is one J-50 fit to bring the house down! And speaking of houses, when it came in ours we were (happily) surprised to find that it has an excellent neck angle, mimimal fret wear, lots of saddle–and it doesn’t appear to have ever had a neck reset! Considering this instrument is just shy 50 years old, that isn’t something you see every day. Moreover, the previous owner had an L.R. Baggs Lyric microphone pickup installed, so you can take this vintage gem on the road and on the stage as easily as plugging in a 1/4″ cable.

Another all-star performer from Marty Lanham’s Nashville Guitar Company shop! This Dreadnought’s decked out in some seriously alluring Brazilian Rosewood–all swirling grain across the back–with Adirondack Spruce on top for maximum projection. Flatpickers, rejoice: between the explosive low end and the crisp trebles is a sea of fat, juicy solos ready to be explored.
In keeping faith with Lanham’s traditional aesthetic, this Dreadnought features Grained Ivoroid bindings and understated Abalone diamond inlays on the fretboard, with a fit and finish that is top notch; and there are virtually no signs of play wear anywhere on this instrument. Wrapped up in a hardshell TKL case when not in use, this Nashville Guitar Co. Dreadnought is ready for many more years of fine music.

If Randy Wood lays his hands on your damaged instruments, you know that soon it will sound better than when it was new. If you, on the other hand, get to lay your hands on one of his instruments, you know that soon your songs are going to sound better than brand new! This Brazilian-Rosewood-and-Adirondack-Spruce Dreadnought we’ve got in the shop today has got more energy than a steam engine, and boasts a gorgeous pre-war aesthetic that’ll be the envy of every Bluegrass picker you know. One of five guitars that Randy built as copies of a certain Herringbone Dreadnought, this 1993 Dreadnought is perfect for the flatpicker looking for an enormous voice with lots of rumble in the bass.
Be it solos or chords, this guitar absolutely kills it–the projection is fearsome, and if you listen at the right moments you can pick up some gorgeous treble overtones fit to melt your heart. We had a go with a few songs, and found this Dreadnought provided excellent accompaniment, if you were prepared to sing a bit louder, and with a thumbpick the bass notes had a fat, juicy snap! to them that’s perfect for Blues.

From the man who, quite literally, wrote the book on contemporary steel string guitar construction, we’ve got a beautiful example of a shallow-bodied Concert-size guitar. Decked out with Flamed Koa for the back and sides and topped with German Spruce, this little sound cannon from 1994 is more than ready to get down to the business of making music. Combining the dry attack of the former with the silky smooth tone of the latter, Cumpiano gives this guitar a voice which is equal parts Bluesy rumble and elegant Ballad. Featuring a slightly narrow neck (with the nut at 1 11/16″), this Concert is the perfect size for someone looking for a smaller package that can still bring home the bacon with regards to projection and sustain.
With a flatpick and Standard tuning, we were able to dig up some powerful, gritty grooves, but the cleanness of the trebles kept everything well balanced. Once we dropped the tuning into DADGAD and relinquished the picks in favor of our fingertips, the entire guitar became a much more nuanced creature, affording us an excellent expression toolset for creating different effects and moods. So: if you’re in the market for a Concert-size guitar which is smoothly balanced and incredibly lightweight and easy on the hands, this might just be the ticket!

For the fingerstylist who needs a guitar that can keep pace with whatever wild tunings strikes his fancy, and can add prodigious strength and tone to every arrangement, no matter how grand or subtle–this is the instrument for you. This 2003 Grand Cathedral Fingerstyle from Kevin Ryan is nothing short of awe-inspiring, from its striking Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, and delicate Abalone inlay to its rich, enveloping voice and vibrant tone.
No matter what tuning we tried, the Grand Cathedral’s voice remained true, with the bass strings retaining their snap and crackle, and the trebles singing as sweetly as in standard pitch. And what lushness, what complex overtones when we pulled out our favorite fingerstyle pieces! This is the kind of guitar which makes your every tune sound just a little better. With the Ebony armrest and Florentine cutaway, playability isn’t even a question–the Grand Cathedral practically plays itself. We’d love to go on and on about this Ryan, but it’s really something you need to see for yourself to really understand. So what are you waiting for?

This Nashville Guitar Company 000 is your short track to fingerstyle heaven. The 000 body and 12-fret neck give this guitar a rich, sweet voice that’s bursting at the seams with delicate overtones and a crisp, responsive bass register. With Koa back and sides for dryness and articulation, and Spruce for powerful projection, this is the perfect storm for a solo fingerstylist. We tried this guitar in Standard, in DADGAD, in DADF#AD, in DADFAD, all the way down to Cadd9 and Open C–it handled each and every tuning we threw its way with aplomb. In particular, Open D Minor had an extra chills-up-your-spine factor, thanks to that Koa dryness.
The 12-fret neck is comfortable in the left hand, and the string-to-string separation is superb; perfect for complex fingerpicking arrangements. The fit and finish is top notch, with gold Waverly slotted tuners for easy retunings between sets, and the 000 size and shape make this guitar instantly intimate in your hands.

If you’re in the market for a deep-bodied GA with lots of low-end rumble and the perfect amount of middle and upper register charm, this McCollum is the one for you. Featuring a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, this guitar is as fun to look at as it is to play. From the celtic knots adorning the fretboard to the interweaving streams of Abalone and MOP that make up the rosette on the Spruce top, Lance McCollum knew exactly what he was doing when he put this beast together–a guitar with both charm and tone to knock the pants of the competition.
The excellent string-to-string balance makes this GA perfect for fingerstyle, but thanks to the deeper body, it holds up beautifully under a flatpick as well. With a voice decked out in crisp, clear overtones, this McCollum will perform equally well in a recording booth as on stage at your next performance.

From the builder who once engineered for Thom Bresh a double-sided guitar so he could play nylon strings and steel strings with a flip of the instrument, we have a golden opportunity for the classical guitarist seeking a Hauser model for him or herself. This 1997 Classical from Del Langejans (now retired), is gorgeous proof that an innovative builder could also produce an amazing instrument according to tradition. Featuring the classic combination of Indian Rosewood and German Spruce, this Classical combines the richness of the former with the glass-smooth projection of the latter.
One pluck of the bass strings, and the entire instrument throbs with energy–and to bathe in the sweet overtones from the treble strings is something you won’t want to miss. Regardless of the type of piece you’re performing, this Langejans Hauser can provide powerful projection, and a smoothness to your compositions that only an instrument that’s opened up as fully as this one can provide. Finally, this Classical features a slim nut, at 1 7/8″, that is incredibly easy on the left hand, making this a Classical that you can play easily for hours to come.

Gather round, all ye Henderson fans: we’ve got a rare treat in the house today! An 2011 OM-42, shining like moonlight on the water with it’s delicate and complex Abalone inlay. Wayne’s only built a handful of OMs, and an even smaller handful of OM-42s, so the odds of finding another guitar like this one are pretty slim–and what a beast! The bass is crisp and explosive, and there’s an awe-inspiring clearness in the separation of notes that will leave your every fingerstyle arrangement lush and orchestral. With the classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Adirondack Spruce for the top, this Henderson OM-42 more than lives up to its heritage.

In flawless condition, and with an impeccable voice, this 1999 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional is a powerhouse you won’t want to pass up. With gorgeous straight-grained Cocobolo Rosewood for the back and sides, and German Spruce for the top, you’ll find the tone rich and expressive, and capable of ferocious projection.
The last owner kept this baby in pristine shape, too, so this is as close as a guitarist can hope to get to a new guitar from Santa Cruz. Moreover, this guitar features a soft-V neck and 1 11/16″ nut, for a slim left hand feel, and a leopard-like spotted pickguard and herringbone trim package for extra suave points. We put this guitar through the ringer with everything from Funk and Blues to Bossa Nova and Bluegrass–and the results were the same every time: rich, dynamic, expressive.

The list of people who could build a Dreadnought like this one–combining the thunderous projection traditionally associated with these guitars with a surgically-precise articulation and balanced voice–is a short one, indeed, with names like Ervin Somogyi and Wayne Henderson at the top of the list. Right there next to them stood Lance McCollum. This particular Dreadnought comes to us as an instrument with no faults, and no excuses: it’s here to make music. The back and sides? Honduran Mahogany from “The Tree,” of course–with waving grain that shimmers as though alive in the light. There’s more: Adirondack Spruce for the top, Lance’s understated but original Abalone-and-wood rosette, a three-ply Mahogany neck with a center seam right through the heel.
For the flatpicker, this McCollum makes dreams come true, rendering everything from Bluegrass to Blues to Swing chords in rich, vibrant color. With crisp trebles and a bottom end with more thud and hustle than you can shake a pick at, this Dreadnought makes even flubbed notes sound great. When you’re satisfied that every strum yields new, enveloping tones, put the pick aside and try this Dread on for fingerpicking size. Lowered to DADGAD or beyond, the bass strings remain crisp and present, and thanks to Lance’s use of a longer scale length, you’ll never need worry about losing that well-defined edge, either. The string-to-string articulation is so strong that even simple fingerstyle arrangements sound proud, orchestral. From top to bottom, inside and out, this Dreadnought might be one of our favorites so far this year.
