2007 Maingard 000 Blackwood/Euro. Spruce
This is quite simply one of the finest guitars we’ve ever had in the shop. Al and I are just smitten with this little beauty. African Blackwood in the hands of Capetown, South Africa builder Marc Maingard just makes perfect sense. Marc seems to know how to extract the absolute best from a tonewood that is held in the highest esteem. Long used for woodwind instruments, African Blackwood is very difficult to find in wide enough pieces for guitar. Even in Africa it’s extremely rare because the trees tend to split in the center leaving only small 3″ or 4″ pieces. Here we have a beautiful 2 piece back and magical tone. Complimented with Armrest and Ribrest bevels, this 000 is the ultimate in comfort, but you still get a huge voice. It’s loud, strong and sweet as black courant preserves. If you’ve been searching for a small body guitar that has it all and then some, be sure to look and listen to this one in detail

Marc Beneteau’s amazing clarity and articulation come through in every guitar he makes. This is certainly one of those guitars that can serve many masters as it’s happy to play styles ranging from Blues to Celtic and beyond. It’s happy played soft or hard. The cutaway, armrest bevel and Calton Case compliment the premium woods to make this a sophisticated Beneteau.

Here we have a great vintage 1948 Martin D-18 guitar. This one has the sound and the attitude that dread players everywhere will love. The punchy bass and zinging trebles that fly across the room. The great thing about this one is it’s been gone over and any issues have been fully addressed. It’s a stable player ready to gig night after night and will give you the killer vintage Martin tone every time.
2000 Gutmeier Model B Birdseye Maple/Spruce
Here we have a Ross Gutmeier crossover classical with a lovely birdseye maple back and sides, mahogany neck, and spruce top. With its slightly narrower nut width, this instrument will be appreciated by the player who straddles styles. Classical, jazz, Latin, Brazilian, and fingerstyle all feel comfortable on this attractive and versatile instrument.
2008 Bozung Vintage J Quilted Mahogany/Adirondack
Once again, Chris Bozung out-Gibsons Gibson with this beautiful slope-shouldered dread. Play it softly and its quilted mahogany and Adirondack Red Spruce sound as warm and toasty as its vintage shaded finish. Strum it hard and it’s 1965 and you’re a young John Lennon banging it out on the set of “Help.” Players with a light touch will hear their sound bloom in a new way, those with heavy touch will love how this one can take a punch and stay on its feet.

Mark Blanchard’s Bristlecone model is slightly larger than an OM in size, and this one offers up the immediate response, beautifully assertive mids, and overall clarity that class is known for. The highly figured Madagascar Rosewood on this instrument is quite stunning, the European Spruce a lovely complement. This one has the Manzer wedge body design so it’s extremely comfortable. Fingerstylists and single-line players who favor a smaller bodied guitar should enjoy this instrument as much as we have.

We’re thinking that Mr. Clapton was definitely onto something with his recent endorsement of Henderson guitars. This beautiful and responsive Dread offers crystalline highs, gutsy but articulate mids, and a powerful bass that’s strong on the fundamental. The surprisingly light weight of this instrument belies its robust and authoritative tone. It’s responds in kind when played lightly with the fingers. When played hard it’s offers up all the power you could want without a hint of muddiness or ambivalence. What a treat it’s been to spend a little time with this one. What a privilege it would be to hear her open up over time.

This is what mahogany is all about. Paired here with Adirondack it gives this guitar multiple gears. Played sweetly you get mahogany’s wonderful clarity and breath but push it a bit and up comes a powerful throaty growl. The Adirondack is perfect on top and adds sparkle and tons of headroom. This is a guitar that can easily handle lots of terrain. We love the unique rosette and Ed’s always understated and elegant appointments. One serious axe. This instrument features:

There’s nothing small sounding about this “Small Jumbo” from Kent Hamblin. Amazon Rosewood and lovely fine-grained Italian Spruce combine to reward the player with a lush warmth accented by clear and balanced highs. Befitting a jumbo-class guitar, the bass is rich and full, yet it never overpowers. Flamed Koa accents and binding provide a beautiful and fitting complement. I didn’t want to put this one down.

Players looking for all the classic OM qualities — projection, clarity, balance, punchy mids — will find what they’re looking for in this Traditional Series Goodall. To our liking there’s also a warmth and smoothness in the middle that lets this one take an assertive strum better than some. This Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce pairing resulted in a well rounded and versatile guitar that sounds more mature than its years.

It’s fine-grained Italian spruce top is framed by highly figured curly maple binding. The balance here is near perfect, with clear and present bases, warm mids, and the ringing highs Goodall’s are known for. With Lance McCollum passing we have decided to donate 50% of the proceeds from this guitar to Lance’s family. This guitar is extraordinary, Lance originally made it for himself and Tony McManus recorded it on his new Maker’s Mark CD. Lance McCollum pulled out all the stops on this beautiful GA. To start with there is a set of most dramatic Brazilian Rosewood with brick red color, then there is the rare bearclaw Italian Spruce top, Snakewood bindings everywhere with green purfling, Snakewood Headplate, Abalone top trim, Abalone Butt Wedge, Interwoven Rosette, Brazilian Bridge and a K&K pickup. But the audio clip is the most impressive part of this one.

James Goodall worked closely with this guitar’s original owner to build the best “perfectly voiced” fingerstyle guitar he possibly could. The attention he gave this instrument is evident in every detail, from the drop dead gorgeous Brazilian rosewood sides and back, to the beautifully fine-grained red cedar top, to the contrasting extra-curly maple binding. Although it was built for a fingerstylist, this one also offers strummers and single line players plenty of shimmer and sustain as well.
