This is simply one of the most sought after signature models that Martin has released to date: the Martin D-45SS Stephen Stills. The D-45SS boasts Alpine Spruce over premium Brazilian Rosewood, Stills’ signature inlaid at the fretboard extension, and the southern star inlaid at the pickguard. Elsewhere, this model is based on Stills’ 1939 Martin D-45, so here represented with the hexagonal 45 treatment along the fretboard, through-saddle belly bridge, and gold Waverly tuners. This one comes wrapped up in an upgraded, custom teal Calton flight case.

We are excited to be partnering with the Ukulele Kids Club Inc., along with four outstanding luthiers: Steve Grimes, Jay Lichty, Peter Robson, and Ben Wilborn, as the platform that will sell four one-of-a-kind guitars to help bring the healing power of music to medically fragile children. It is our honor to support the efforts of these altruistic luthiers who have chosen to donate these fine instruments to benefit so many children in need. All partners and luthiers are proud to share that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ukulele Kids Club Inc.
Here we’ve got Steve Grimes’ FHP-33 parlor guitar with some asymmetrical curves. As with all four LFAC guitars, the body is Flame Maple with Sitka Spruce on top, supplied by Steve. In addition to asymmetrical proportions, Steve also includes a carved back like you’d find on an archtop guitar. Here that comes together in a slim package that nonetheless has a sizeable voice under the hood. Great string energy and quick, snappy decay makes for a solid blues guitar, but there’s also a touch of sweetness and roundness in the trebles that works well for a range of styles.

Ted Åstrand grants us the resonant gift with this 2017 Å-OM. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides paired with a European Alpine Moonspruce top, 25 inch scale, and slotted headstock; “Scissor Bird” fretboard inlay and Koa bindings to tie it all together. The 14-fret neck is rubbed down to a feather-smooth velvety finish, and the C profile has a faint peak that almost minutely hints at a V. Nickel Waverly tuners offset the Rosewood headstock veneer, and the fiery-dark grain of the Rosewood bridge similarly sets off the creamy expanse of the Moon Spruce top.
This Å-OM has a lively voice which errs on the side of dry articulation over enveloping overtones. The upper register cuts well, pairs nicely with the crunchy mids. The bass response is light and energetic rather than dark, which isn’t to say the overall tone suffers from an atrophied bass. Rather, the voice is exceedingly well-balanced, with even response across all the registers and great note separation. The shorter scale and matte-finished neck make for a comfortable playing experience, and boasting a fighting weight of 4lbs 1oz this Åstrand feels quick and agile in your hands.

Laurent Brondel’s The 18 is a powerhouse guitar inspired by, and in some ways surpassing, the classic prewar Martin OM. Amazing. This is among the rarest, and finest, Gibson mandolins we’ve had the pleasure of hosting: a 1923 F-5 Lloyd Loar. All original, right down to the virzi inside, and still in great playing shape today, 100 years later. That in itself is amazing–this beauty is still going strong! This ’23 Loar comes to us with serial number 72857, carved body of Maple body with Spruce top, light sunburst finish, smooth tuner operation and weighs in just over two pounds.
The Loar era has forever changed the definition of the American mandolin, and here we have a pristine example of his early magic that’s inspired so many generations of builders and players.

John Slobod has a nack for building OMs that exemplify the Orchestra Model ambition of “do-it-all” guitars. This 2013 OM with Palo Escrito and Adirondack Spruce is precisely that, at home in a wide range of settings and balanced across the registers for both picks and fingers. Not only is the fit and finish excellent, John’s eye for good wood is on point, too: the Palo Escrito has some lovely swirling figure, and on top he opted for a segmented rosette with what appear to be Rosewood blocks. Gold EVO frets for longevity; Waverly tuners for light weight. This 2013 Circa OM comes wrapped up in an Ameritage case.

Add to Compare2016 Manzer Pat Metheny Signature 6 Limited Edition, Indian Rosewood/German Spruce
It’s been a good year:, we just landed Linda Manzer’s 21st (of 30) Pat Metheny Signature 6 Limited Run from 2016. Set up with Indian Rosewood back and sides plus German Spruce top, as well as many of the ergonomic features Metheny uses on his own Manzers. There’s the namesake Manzer Wedge and Venetian Cutaway, and added to that we have a groove carved into the heel, coupled with a thumb rest on the bass side, to coax the player’s left hand just a smidge closer to those uppermost frets.
The inlays across the headstock and fretboard are matched with the orange Calton flight case, and each of these 30 guitars is inlaid in a pattern unique to this run. The inlays were executed in conjunction with master inlay artist Mark Kett. Further, Linda used Copper for the side dots, and inlaid a Diamond at the 7th fret dot to boot. Linda also collaborated with Tony Duggan-Smith for the final setup and fretwork on each.
