2005 Applegate SJ, Flame Walnut/Redwood
This Applegate is a fingerstyle guitar, through and through. We love Brian’s work, and have happily sold his guitars for years, so when this 2005 SJ came along we were eager to represent it. Walnut back and sides, Redwood top, and Brian’s flawless Abalone appointments and falling leaf fretboard inlays. If you prefer a slim neck, this Applegate will be a perfect fit. The setup is slick and easy; makes deft fretwork for the left hand.
The voice is lush, round, and intimate. We loved cozying up with this guitar for open tunings. The treble strings have a sweet, luscious presence with extra warmth from the Redwood top. This SJ weighs in just shy of four pounds. You hardly notice it’s in your lap.
We love the smooth response and clarity of this 2005 Applegate SJ, and we think you will too.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, maple leaf, maple leaves, gotoh, 25.4, cedar creek

Powerhouse lutherie duo Claudio and Claudia Pagelli have been pushing the bleeding edge of guitarbuilding for decades now, yielding a fiercely independent and inventive body of work that completely stands apart from the crowd. We are so excited to be officially partnering up with them to bring you their latest and greatest!
Here we’ve got one of their 40th Anniversary models outfitted with Ovangkol back and sides, Moonspruce top, and some really incredible soundhole and soundport design work. Note the twin offset soundholes at the upper bout of the top? Flip around back for a soundport that’s integrated below the neck, and head over to the bass side lower bout for a rectangular soundport to round it all out. Additionally, the top is braced with continuous brace stock that spreads out at the ends in a vinelike fan that we’ve never seen before. The result is a very energetic and chirpy voice, with treble strings that absolutely kill, very clean and crisp. Wenge neck with a satin finish? Makes for a gossamer lefthand experience. Throw in a unique pinless bridge design and negative space headstock, and you’ve got a whole new kind of beast in your hands.

Powerhouse lutherie duo Claudia and Claudio Pagelli have been pushing the bleeding edge of guitarbuilding for decades now, yielding a fiercely independent and inventive body of work that completely stands apart from the crowd. We are so excited to be officially partnering up with them to bring you their latest and greatest!
This Gringobeat is a semihollow archtop with reimagined curves to maximize ergonomics without compromising an ounce of tone. Note the asymetrical bouts, which help position the guitar perfectly for your right hand; the silky setup and satin-finished Okoume neck; the aluminum arm rest and nickel hardware. The body is also Okoume, aged at least 25 years before use, and the top is a set of carved Swiss Alpine Moonspruce that is finished in the Pagellis’ 3D technique, which yields unique and different results each time. On this Gringobeat, the finish rises and falls across the surface, with lower layers letting the Spruce grain telegraph through. Running your hands over it is a delight. On the electronics front, we’re outfitted with triple Lollar Gold Foils plus a six-way switch for a wide, wide palette of tones (the first position towards the bridge actives the two outer pickups). Additionally, a KMS bridge plus Bigsby tailpiece, and Hipshot knobs, complete the package.

Opened up and singing like sweet baby James himself, this 2002 Olson SJ Cutaway is dressed up and ready for action. Indian Rosewood body with Cedar top, classic 5-ply neck and slinky setup, then upgraded with specs to match the James Taylor Signature model with Abalone trim, downward facing MOP doves on the fretboard to contrast the doves flying upwards from the bridge wings. We’ve only seen a few Olsons with these downward-facing doves, and the look is striking. Tone wise, this one has great balance across the registers, and an extra dose of sparkle not only in the trebles, but also the mids and a touch of the bass. Add an LB6 pickup and tweed case, and you’ve got the complete package.

Strong, oh so strong. Glassy response, and this glass is clearly tempered since it holds up well to a heavier attack just as well as a light touch. Bill Wise of Charis Acoustics, after working with the venerable Jim Olson, has had an excellent career of building premium modern flattops, and we’ve had nothing but great experiences with both Bill and his guitars. This 2009 SJ Cutaway is quite the sharp dressed number! African Blackwood body with Engelmann Spruce top, flamed bindings and arm bevel, 5-ply neck and silky setup. The voice has chocolatey darkness in the bass response, and a fully developed and articulate midrange that really fills the room. Sweet trebles have a slight blooming quality after the immedate attack, making this an exquisite instrument for fingerstyle.

Dressed up with striking tonewoods and Lowden’s trademark super thin satin finish, this 2019 S-50 cuts a fine figure with 50-style appointments, arm bevel, and Gotoh 510 tuners. The short 24 3/4″ scale is quite easy in hand, and that bevel ratchets up player comfort even more so. Lowden’s S body size is just so comfy. On the tone front, this S-50 has a dry and quick voice with snappy trebles and just a touch of sparkle. Thanks to an all-Tasmanian Blackwood body, no doubt. In 2019-2020, Lowden and co offered an exclusive series of all-blackwood instruments, and this S-50 14-fret is one of the select few from that run.

Steve Fischer builds steel strings to respond as well as classicals—and his petite Aria model is a fingerstylist’s favorite. This beauty from 2018 is approximately a 00 proportionately, with an intimate and engrossing voice that scales well when you lean in with a more aggressive attack. The fan-braced Alaskan Yellow Cedar top is responsive to a T, and its warmth pairs up nicely with the dry projection of its Honduran Mahogany back and sides. 25 1/4” scale threads the needle between crisp and round tones, and keeps playability effortless. Steve upgraded this one with a sultry sunburst on top and Spalted Maple rosette, Quilted Sapele bindings, slotted headstock, and Waverly tuners. Additionally, this Fischer Aria is outfitted with an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system, which faithfully translates the warmth and precision right into amplified territory. Weighs in under four pounds! Petite, yet powerful.

Just when we thought our Classical selection was complete, we stumbled across this gem! A 2005 Bouchet model from modern master Antonio Marin Montero himself. Complete with Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this Classical can offer you sparkling trebles and resounding depth across the lower registers. The last Bouchet we had in the shop from Montero was superb; this one is just as jaw-dropping. With a ligthweight build that feels weightless in your lap, this Classical has a silk-smooth setup for effortless playing, and provides haunting overtones across the upper register, and with sustain as prolonged as this guitar can produce, the air around you swimming with rich notes.
One of the foremost Classical builders working today, Montero is known for his craftsmanship, and for the difficulty one experiences in trying to acquire one of his guitars for themselves, so we would recommend laying your hands on this one before it disappears; Classicals of this calibre don’t wait around collecting dust.

Oh here’s one down with, turn off your phone and lock the door. This 2013 Flammang AJ75 is rich, engrossing, sweetly clear and glassy. African Blackwood for the back and sides with Adirondack Spruce on top mix for clarity and darkness, which works fantastically for both and Travis picking, to be honest. The top features a tight burst and tiger stripe pickguard, rectangular bridge, and checkerboard appointments. Mahogany neck is the perfect amount of well rounded C like a vintage J-45, and lightweight Waverly tuners at thre headstock complete the look.

What could be better than working with a great client and one of our favorite builders for a custom project? This Klein & Kauffman 426 was the result of one such collaboration, and it couldn’t have turned out better. We decided on a dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood body with European Spruce on top, plus a multiscale setup to allow for a range of altered tunings. The result is the trademark Klein bass response, plus punchy mids and a clean top end with some sweet overtones. Riches abound! Additionally, Steve dressed this up a soundport, custom Hoffee case and cover, and we even got Larry Robinson to inlay a vibrant, iridescent lotus at the headstock. Along the fretboard are correspondingly colorful Abalone block position markers.

Here’s an Olson that stands out among even Olsons–a 1990 Dreadnought Cutaway with Indian Rosewood body and Sitka Spruce top. The intervening thirty years have seen lots of great music pass between the strings, and the voice is quite lively and wide awake. Quick and energetic, notes like to shoot up and away from the guitar in a way that would makes certain the player can shine through the mix. Herringbone trim and tortoise-style bindings, plus the ubiquitious MOP dove inlays, makes for a classic 90s Olson.

Masterpiece, indeed. Preston Thompson’s team has spent over a year and a half on No. 1 in their Masterpiece Series. This 45-style OM is a testament to steady hands, the finest tonewoods, and the patience required to execute so many minute details in such fine style (read: over 270 inches of inlaid Abalone). A gorgeous example of their “shipwreck” Brazilian Rosewood was used for the back and sides, and a Martin-style brown ‘burst Adirondack Spruce rests on top with Abalone trim and a Brazilian Rosewood belly bridge. Rounded block inlays of Brazilian Rosewood span between each and every gold EVO fret, with Myrtlewood edge bindings and Abalone ring position markers.
The headstock’s fern inlays offer a glimpse of what is to come when you turn the guitar over in your hands: curling up from the tailblock on the back are eight fern tendrils executed with Bronze Mother-Of-Pearl and Green Abalone. A simple strip of flamed Myrtlewood divides the fern in two.
For all that the visual presentation is flawless and elegant, it’s the voice of this Thompson Masterpiece that brings it all home. Smooth balance from E to e, powerful but restrained response to keep notes crisp and focused, and the sort of effortless playability that makes this a guitar which almost plays itself—it’s a wonder to get anything done with this guitar in the room.
The sheer number of hours that have gone into this Thompson is humbling, as is the setup, and especially the tone. The mantle of masterpiece rests easily on its shoulders.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, PKT, OM-45, 45-style, brazilain, abolane, abolone, shipwreck brazilian, adriondack, harptone

A rare and special treat, even among such unique pieces we’ve come to expect from Jeff Traugott: our 1996 Traugott RT 12-fret in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce. Originally built for Martin Simpson, this RT combines a long 25 1/2” scale with a 12-fret neck for clarity and projection, and has sides which are slightly narrower than a regular R to sweeten up the bass response, to say nothing of keeping the guitar lightweight and easy to play. There’s a certain kind of intimacy to the tone that we haven’t found in many of Jeff’s 14-fret models, one that lends itself handsomely to open tunings and a wide range of fingerstyle approaches. In 2002, Jeff installed a new neck with double graphite rods. Wrapped up in a Calton flight case, this gorgeous RT is safe and sound. It’s ready for action at the drop of a hat.

Quick, lively, and raring to go! Here we’ve landed a gorgeous Florentine model from the one and only Abraham Wechter, boasting a slim build weight just over four pounds with Mahogany back and sides and Spruce top, 25.4″ scale and 1 3/4″ nut, and light Maple appointments throughout. The flavor of Mahogany we’re working with here is incredibly light and amber in color–almost like Satinwood at first glance–really makes this one stand out. The voice has great balance across the registers, with energetic trebles that lend an immediacy to the voice that’s honestly great for both fingers and picks.

Here’s one you’ll struggle to put down. Logan spec’d out this powerhouse with Michael Kennedy with the goal of landing a resonant, responsive, engrossing multiscale guitar. Clearly, Mike nailed it. The voice is crisp and clear, with bell-like trebles and a resounding bass response. Instant success for fingerstyle. Soaks up C tunings like it was made for it (and it was). We paired a striking set of Ziricote for the back and sides with Sinker Cedar on top, a 26.25-25.5″ multiscale fretboard, beveled bindings, soundport, tornavoz–the works! If you’re looking for a livewire that holds its own in a wide range of tunings and attacks, our latest Michael Kennedy GC simply will not disappoint.
