How do you describe RainSong’s JM? Three words: loud, loud, and loud. And if that’s not enough, it’s also loud. This is the largest body RainSong builds which is ideally suited to the new Baritone model. The sheer size, combined with the attributes of Projection Tuned Layering provides a deep. low end rumble that can go from quit to loud at will. Yet the JM Baritone has a narrow waist making it way more comfortable to play than one might think.
RainSong’s Projection Tuned Layering technique tunes the tone without the need for soundboard braces. Abalone rosette. All-graphite body. No body braces. All-graphite neck and epoxy fingerboard fabricated using RainSong’s Performance Shape Casting as a single piece with adjustable truss rod. Custom Mother of Pearl sharks. Tusq Nut, saddle. The result of masters from two fields in collaboration: luthiers Dale & Tyler Unger and hyperrealist painter Peter Maier. The Ram is a particular brand of unique—17 inch archtop whose Maple back is adorned with a hyper realistic ram from Maier. On top, a gold motif continues along the center seam and with the trapeze tailpiece and hardware, plus gold Gotoh mini tuners. The headstock boasts a tightly figured Koa headplate, and from there you’ll find a series of vibrant Abalone position markers along the fretboard. On the electronics front, Unger outfitted the Ram with a Kent Armstrong floating humbucker plus volume and tone at the pickguard (itself featuring a single band of gold that arcs diagonally across). Top is AAAA European Spruce, paired with AAAA European Maple for the back and sides. Flame Maple neck, set off with the Ebony fingerboard, completes the portrait. Here’s Maier: “The Ram guitar was inspired by my time at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, where skulls of animals were dominant in many business locations—however I worked gold leaf onto the horns with an engine turned finish to give it more of a costly & valued appearance.”

A fantastic example of Dan Bresnan’s fine lutherie in action! This is one of Dan’s OMs from 2006, here in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce, that’s ready to keep playing. Dan employed one of his mosaic rosettes to up the visual ante, and elsewhere adopted an understated aesthetic that lets the various woods shine. Alessi tuners, Ameritage case, and a frankly effortless playability make this a great guitar for fingerstyle. The voice is first and foremost well balanced, letting complex chords ring out properly, and we especially like how that clarity and balance is maintained up the neck.

This is his newly redesigned SmoothTalker OM model, featuring African Kiaat body and a Swiss Spruce top. The body of the instrument is essentially a clamshell that can be easily disassembled, has an adjustable neck angle to keep the setup precisely where you want it, and comes with an L.R. Baggs Element pickup system installed to carry you into amplified territory with plug-n-play ease; note the volume knob integrated into the bass side lower bout. These SmoothTalkers have a very quick and woody attack, and play like grass fed butter.

Our latest beauty from Germany’s Wilm Stötzel is just that: gorgeous from tuners to tail, with a voice to match. Here we find Wilm’s Small Jumbo model decked out with Wenge back and sides and an Italian Spruce top, 25.5” scale for a touch added power and projection, and gorgeous geometric motifs at the rosette and headstock veneer. This instrument excels for fingerstyle playing, and has the right amount of depth and clarity to work wonders with a flatpick as well. Naturally, we had a blast with the Stötzel tuned to DADGAD.

To honor Bob’s 30th anniversary building guitars under the Taylor name, a limited number of premium XXX guitars were built. We’ve got number 8 of 150 here, an exquisite Grand Concert in Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce that’s topped off with commemorative inlays across the fretboard extension and a slotted headstock on a 14-fret neck. Since 2004, this Taylor has been well-cared for with hardly a mark on her mirror-sheen body.
We were delighted to find an added layer of definition and sustain in the bass register which paired well with the smooth and crisp top end. Since it’s such an excellent fingerstyle guitar, we put it through its paces in a few open tunings, and found Taylor’s trademark playability to shine through in each. The body and rosette are trimmed out in dark Abalone, and the neck has a neck with a crushed velvet-like feel that remains smooth to the touch even after our hands warmed up, as can happen with a glossy neck. It’s a wonder this Taylor XXX-BE has been so well preserved, and we’re proud to offer it in such fine condition.

This 2018 Traphagen 000-12 BRS is just what we’ve come to expect from Dake: enveloping overtones, smooth response, and clarity, clarity, clarity. We have great respect for a luthier who’s equally at home with steel strings as nylon strings, because we find that the skills required for one complement the other in interesting ways.
This 000-12 has an easy, round quality to its voice that is reminiscent of the bass strings on a classical, but with added bite in the mids and trebles. The neck is a flattened C shape, and is Spirit Varnished liked the rest of the guitar to a glossy sheen. French Polish leaves the top extra resonant and responsive. Dake chose an ancient, 250-year-old set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and lined the sides with a thin layer of Spanish Cypress (stained brown to match) for extra stiffness without adding much mass. A creamy set of Carpathian Spruce on top, with a gorgeous Maple Burl rosette, completes the package.
A guitar of this calibre, it’s love at first pluck.

Glass action beautiful. Tom Doerr had a delicate hand for crafting resonant, responsive modern flattops; just look at the fit and finish on this 2018 Trinity Select for proof of that. Flawless, with an exquisite attention to detail, executed in a high gloss finish to really make this one pop. Amazon Rosewood back and sides pair up with Swiss Moonspruce on top, plus an arm bevel and florentine cutaway for creature comforts. A 25-26” multiscale fretboard makes for easy playability and a wide dynamic range, both in standard as well as altered tunings. The voice is equal parts crisp and strong, especially for a smaller bodied instrument. Part of that is of course Tom’s skill in voicing the top to be extra responsive, and the other part being that multiscale setup for a bit more punch in the bass register. All in all, this 2018 Doerr Trinity Select is a shining example of Tom’s legacy to the world of lutherie and fingerstyle guitars.

Brand new! This is what happens when a master archtop builder continues to push the envelope: Tad Brown CC Blue. Red Spruce top, Red Maple body, plus a CC Pickups ES250 Charlie Christian pickup and cobalt array, pale Maple bindings with an extra bevelled edge (and a subtle arm bevel introduced into the bindings and top itself at the lower bout); Rosewood appointments throughout; a slim build weight and 1 3/4” nut. The “blue” model designation refers to Tad’s use of lapis lazuli in the finish, resulting in a three-dimensional effect that pulls extra depth out of the Flame Maple body and Adirondack Spruce top.
This time around, Tad spec’d this CC Blue with a tighter lower bout, putting this one at 15 1/2″ across. This makes for an even more easy-playing experience. The neck profile Tad describes as a “slim sportscar neck,” and this one practically drives itself.
