2019 Borghino BB1, Italian Walnut/Italian Spruce
Italy’s Mirko Borghino has collaborated with Italy’s Francesco Buzzurro for this boutique hybrid archtop nylon string 2019 BB1 equally at home for jazz and the classical repertoire. An arched Italian Walnut body is paired with a carved Italian Spruce top from the Val di Fiemme, Alessi tuners, and the dynamite Graph Tech Ghost nylon string pickup system. This offers both 1/4” and MIDI outputs plus volume knobs for both outputs, and bass, treble, mid, and mid sweep tone. So many options! The Borghino BB1 is immensely fun to play, hands down. It handles a wide range of styles and attacks with aplomb, plays effortlessly, and has a lively and quick response that translates perfectly from an acoustic setting into amplified territory.

Built in 2007 and ready for action! We’ve landed a gorgeous example of Dennis Overton’s work with this Dreadnought dressed up in Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce and bespoke candle inlay at the headstock. Overton worked with the one and only John Arnold for years, and it’s easy to so the influence of John’s traditional methods on Overton’s builds. Here the Brazilian is a surprisingly light colored set, and is set off with Ivoroid bindings that pair up nicely with the tight-grain Ady top. We’ve gone over this one tuners to tail and are happy to give it a clean bill of health. And we’ll be even happier to give it a new home! Give us a shout.

Such a powerful example of modern lutherie. The voice of this brand new Rein RJN-3 is exceptionally clear and smooth, with a lovely balance across the registers. Port Orford Cedar top pairs with Macassar Ebony back and sides (with dramatic dark and light bands of alternating grain); Tom’s ingenious adjustable neck angle system; Mahogany neck with a generous C profile carve and EVO frets. The PO Cedar is french polished for maximum resonance, and elsewhere Tom used a catalyzed urethane finish for a bit extra protection. A glossy neck never felt so smooth! A 2020 build from Joel Michaud that’s already wide awake, dressed to the nines, and playing effortlessly? That’s what we’re fortunate enough to have in the shop today. Such a feat of modern lutherie. Amazon Rosewood back and sides, pencil straight and ruddy red, plus master grade Moonspruce on top and a multiscale design at 26 inches down to 25.4 inches, makes for an incredibly resonant fingerstyle guitar that’s equally at home in Standard as it is in DADGAD or C tunings. It’s the kind of guitar where even flubbed notes sound good. Additionally, Michaud added twin arm & rib bevels for creature comfort, and an eliptical soundport to boot. Plus EVO frets for longevity! And the cream on top is Joel’s addition of oxidized metal appointments at the rosette, headstock, and endgraft.

We’ve been eagerly waiting for a Preston Thompson Dreadnought to land in our lap, and our patience has been rewarded handsomely! This 2016 Preston Thompson is dressed up in their secret stash “Shipwreck” Brazilian Rosewood with an Adirondack Spruce top and Abalone torch inlaid across the headstock. Logo on the backstrap, herringbone trim and a zigzag backstrip; to call it gorgeous would be an understatement.
The projection and dynamic response from this guitar are inspirational to say the least, with a powerful bass register that’s defined rather than muddy, paired with crisp trebles and a colorful midrange. Played gently or with gusto, this PKT Dread exhibits a robust fundamental and impressive sustain. The playability is exceptional, the condition impeccable, and the tone incredible. Need a dread for the stage? This beauty comes with one of James May’s Utra Tonic pickups! Lesser Dreadnoughts, beware! You’re owners might not look at you the same way after they’ve played this Preston Thompson.

If we had to count our favorite traditional builders on one hand, John Slobod would be one of the first fingers on the list. John’s instruments are built with a lifelong passion that’s honed by his wonderful ear and razor’s edge lutherie skills. It should come as no surprise that we’re head over heels for this 2007 Circa Dreadnought with 28-style appointments, Madagascar Rosewood, and Adirondack Spruce. The setup is responsive and easy: you can dig in with a pick without fighting the action. John’s carved out a sweet spot for the bass response with plenty of articulation and just enough boom to fill out the room. It’s hard to find a more responsive, expertly crafted, and just downright fun to play dread than from John Slobod’s Portland, Maine workshop.

In excellent shape, built very recently in 2016, our latest Bourgeois Dreadnought is a beast of another order. This is Dana’s Fully Torrefied AT model, meaning the Mahogany back, sides, and top have all been baked for that old world vintage tone in a new package. A vintage-style Sunburst really sets off the woods, and even the braces are baked! Of course, Hide Glue construction throughout. Nickel Waverly tuners, a V neck with slim, 1 23/32” nut for deft fretwork and 2 3/16” spacing at the saddle. The voice is crisp and loud, and you don’t have to lay into the string to get a lot of projection. Of course, should you choose to dig in you’ll be rewarded with a dry tone with lots of headroom. This is a fantastic example of what happens when you pair traditional concepts with modern technology and design: the Bourgeois D Fully Torrefied AT.

This one won’t be here long. A Kim Walker SJ from 2000 that’s decked out in a dark sunburst, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top. This Sitka was 25-years-old then, which makes it 45 now! We’ve played several of Kim’s guitars built around this time, and each one had a little something special to the voice (and that’s beyond the already incredible tone we associate with Kim’s work). We love how lively and responsive this one is. It’s lightweight, just over four pounds, and it plays like grass-fed butter. What more can you ask for? Come and get it while you can!

We’ve had many, many guitar from Kevin Ryan pass through our shop, and we’ve been consistently impressed by their consistent tone, balance, and particular excellence for fingerstyle music. But this beautiful 2004 Nightingale Signature may be one of the most incredible. Not only are Kevin’s aesthetics on point (Ebony bindings, arm bevel, sparkling Abalone trim, fossilized nut & saddle, Lapis Lazuli-inlaid bridge pins), but the set of “El Milagro” Brazilian Rosewood he chose for the back and sides is jaw-dropping for both its grain lines and its acoustic properties. Tied with Swiss Spruce on top, this Nightingale Signature has a voice that is simultaneously voluminous and bell-like. It’s a huge, room-filling voice that also manages to make individual notes sound intimate as a whispered word.
Larry Robinson adorned the fretboard extension with a Celtic horse, and capped the heel block with a matching Celtic dog. The effect sets off the beauty of the surrounding woods without stealing the show; like everything else about this guitar, the Robinson inlays operate smoothly as part of the harmonious whole. As an added bonus, this is the first Signature Series guitar that Kevin adorned with his signature on the headstock!
One final touch: the satin neck and velvet setup are a dream in your hands. This is easily one of the finest Ryans we’ve ever seen.

Richard Schneider’s Kasha-style Classicals are true treats. This example from 1989 features Redwood top and back and Brazilian Rosewood sides, offset soundhole and asymmetrical bridge, and brass frets on a 670mm scale neck. Access panel at the tail to boot! The voice is dialed in for exquisite precision across the registers. Eschewing the concept of a tieblock altogether, this Kasha-Style Classical anchors the strings from the inside of the guitar, accessible via the access panel Schneider includes at the tail. All wrapped up in the original custom Mark Leaf flight case, this Schneider Kasha Classical is always safe and sound on those rare occasions when the guitar isn’t in your hand.s
We even have an endorsement from the great master himself, Andrés Segovia, for Schneider’s work (and what higher praise could there be?): “I consider Mr. Richard Schneider a magnificent builder of guitars. He is a very efficient collaborator to Mr. Kasha…and still continue experimenting…to increase the volume of its sound without sacrificing its delicacy.”

Such a lovely example of modern French lutherie. The bar is set high with such work from Dominque Delarue! Straight-grain Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top, 650mm scale and 51mm nut, and a slim play weight right at 4lbs—this Concert Classical feels natural and organic in hand, and responds handsomely to a wide range of attacks. The Spanish Cedar neck is carved out to a medium thickness throughout with a U-shaped profile, and the body is bound with Rosewood to match the headstock veneer and bridge. Gold Alessi tuners with Snakewood buttons are an added touch of elegance to go with Delarue’s intricately carved headstock, and at the soundhole we find a similarly intricate mosaic rosette with red purflings to spruce up the Spruce top, so to speak. Built in 2020 but already wide awake, expressive, and powerful.
