1995 Olson Parlor, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
This is a special treat for all you Olson fans! Jim only ever built about 11 Parlors, and has stated several times that he won’t ever build any more—and this is the only example we know of with both a Brazilian Rosewood body and a florentine cutaway. German Spruce on top, plus the tree of life fretboard plus headplate inlays, further set it apart. This is a powerful, punch-above-its-weight Parlor with a wide, wide open voice and easy playability. 25.4” scale with a 12 fret neck for that sweet spot between power and warmth, and the right amount of round pop to the trebles in true Parlor style. This one’s been played in since 1995, originally owned by Nashville Hall of Fame singer-songwriter Pat Alger to make sure it’s opened up handsomely, and also comes with a dual source Fishman pickup plus Fishman Pocket Box external preamp which sounds gorgeous and accurate right out of the gate.

Here’s a special throwback for all you Olson fans. This beauty comes to us from 1992 with Indian Rosewood body and a Cedar top, florentine cutaway, and some lovely Abalone dove inlays along the fretboard to match the Abalone top trim and MOP rosette. We love how much this Olson has opened up; it’s got an incredible amount of projection and dynamic range, with good headroom for a flatpick, and also sensitive to a lighter fingerstyle approach as well.

This one’s wide awake and ready for more: our 2008 Froggy Bottom H12 Deluxe. Gorgeous Madagascar Rosewood body with dramatic ink lines and grain, an Adirondack Spruce top that’s opened up handsomely since ’08, and a 12-fret, 25” scale setup that mixes up great across the registers for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. One of those Froggy Bottoms that does it all, and does it all exceedingly well!

Hawaii-based luthier Steve Grimes knows how to make nylon string sing. This 2002 Cutaway model is a lovely number dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce, Koa bindings, and a tasty Abalone palm tree inlaid at the 12th fret—plus the aforementioned cutaway for better access to those dusty top frets. Blue purflings set off the amber colors of the top and Koa bindings, and add a bright spice to the overall aesthetic. Combined with an elliptical rosette of Koa, and this Grimes Nylon String Cutaway stands apart from the crowd in all the right ways.

Roy McAlister’s Vintage Series guitars are a delight: traditional aesthetics and a modern voice. This 2010 OM-42 is a fantastic example! Brazilian Rosewood body with Adirondack Spruce up top and some gorgeous sea green Abalone appointments in a 42-style package. Though it’s designated as an OM-42 on the label, this beauty has a 000 scale setup that’s butter smooth and a delight on the hands. The voice is even to a T, with all registers mixing up smoothly. We love the flame figure along the back of the Mahogany neck, and the pairing with Snakewood bindings throughout. It’s a well-dressed crooner from tuner to tail. The Adi top has opened up nicely since 2010 and is raring to go!

Ah, we love gorgeous this 2021 OM from Don Musser. He picked out a stellar set of Cocobolo Rosewood for the body, and paired it with Colorado Blue Spruce on top and Curly Maple bindings—and it sounds as lovely as it looks. Nearly new from 2021 and the voice is already expansive and balanced across the registers.

Here we’ve landed a great example of Martin Custom Shop chops with a 2016 000-14F decked out all in Fiddleback Mahogany and bound in Maple. Rope style rosette and trim? Yes, please! While designated as a 000 at the heelblock, this Custom Shop has a long scale setup that works well with the all-Mahogany construction, giving a nice edge to the woody warmth. Quick decay lends itself well for blues or rags, and we had a blast getting into it here. We love the Maple torch inlaid at the headstock, rather than the typical Abalone, for a more understated effect that looks gorgeous and makes this 000-14F stand out even more.

David Russell Young built guitars for only a handful of years, managing to rack up an impressive stable of world class players in the 60s and 70s, including the one and only Gram Parsons. We feel privileged to have a beautiful example of his work from 1978 on offer today, a Dreadnought with 3-piece Brazilian Rosewood back and Cedar top, Rosewood bindings, and a stylized phoenix inlaid in Abalone at the headstock. The neck is also Brazilian Rosewood, adding sustain to the voice and rarity to the build. The slick and easy setup makes for effortless playability, and we find this one is equally at home with picks as fingertips. It has some honest play wear but is structurally sound (evidence of its having been played in and woken up), plus the soundhole currently bears a Fishman rare earth pickup mounted at the fretboard terminus.

Kevin Caton’s latest Sullivan comes to us with straight-grain Guatemalan Rosewood and Italian Spruce, Kevin’s unique Bevel Port, and a wide open voice that’s dialed in for maximum resonance. Brand new! And already wide awake. Great sonority in the bass and mids, with a sweet amount of bloom to the trebles that has a subtle, lingering effect. A Ryan-style arm bevel on top, plus venetian cutaway, make for easy playability, and the flawless fit and finish means this one looks as good as it plays, and that’s saying something.

A real powerhouse is a thing that comes in time. And this 45-style Model D from Santa Cruz, which hails all the way from 1995, is precisely that. Elegant and powerful, with excellent balance across the registers. This Dread plays so smoothly, you can lean on the gas or step it back and this one keeps up just fine. The 45-style treatment is simply stunning from tuners to tail, all done in dark Abalone plus a gorgeous torch inlaid at the headstock with the SCGC logo snuck into the center. Play feel is silky smooth and easy on both hands; we even like playing this one with light gauge strings when it first came in (we’ve since replaced them with mediums). On the tonewood front, the back and sides are dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood, and the Santa Cruz team topped this D with German Spruce, which isn’t something we see every day. We think that contributes in part to the smooth quality to the trebles here. This is a masterwork from Santa Cruz that we’re more than excited to offer to you.

Here’s a special treat. We’ve landed a 2019 Santa Cruz Custom that’s outfitted with the top shelf of the top shelf woods from tuner to tail: The Tree Mahogany body with Tunnel 13 Redwood top; Brazilian Rosewood bindings, appointments, headplate; Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons. The result is fantastic, proof that the fox at Santa Cruz are working on the top of their game. The voice is very smooth and balanced, with added darkness and color in the bass and mids for an enveloping flavor. There’s a lot of projection packed away under the hood, especially for an OM-sized guitar, and the setup is effortless to boot.

Now here’s a big box that knows how to fill a room! We love Lowden’s O body size for its power, but also the balance and clarity that George’s team coaxes out of the braces. This O-35c from 2009 is decked out with Indian Rosewood back and sides and a Spruce top that’s opened up nicely in the intervening years—but this beauty has been very well-cared for so it’s looking pretty damn minty. Figured Maple bindings round out the understated aesthetic, plus an Abalone rosette to ring it all in.

Lance McCollum provided the modern guitar world with a treasure trove of builds ranging from harp guitars to baritones, and it’s his Meaghan model that we keep coming back to. 15 inches across the lower bout, with a side depth of 5 1/8” at the tail, offers great depth and power while still feeling—and playing—like a small-bodied instrument. That, paired with sapwood Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce on top, makes this 1998 Meaghan rich and responsive and energetic. You can really lose track of time with this one; the string to string balance is excellent. Lance’s fit and finish was top notch, and this beauty’s been well cared for across the past twenty plus years. It’s ready for the next player today.
