2019 Kris Barnett, Gabon Ebony/Cedar
This is our first Kris Barnett, here from 2019, and we hope it won’t be our last. Such a beauty. Gabon Ebony body with Cedar on top (itself partially ‘bent’ and paired with an elevated fingerboard for easy playability); Spanish Cedar neck; resonant French Polishing throughout; and modern features like a two-way adjustable truss rod and bolt on neck! It’s refreshing to see contemporary designs like these cropping up in the nylon string world, offering new ways to contribute to, and elevate, the Classical repertoire.

Paulino Bernabe offers us a lovely voice and powerful bass with this Concierto model from 2002. Brazilian Rosewood body with German Spruce on top (one of our favorite combinations), plus a 650mm scale and 50mm nut for a familiar, easy setup. This one’s opened up handsomely since 2002, and feels lively and energetic in hand. Consistent note definition and separation across the registers, with a little extra kick to the bass that helps this one push out and fill the concert hall.

Fresh setup and singing! What better way to experience the joy of an opened up instrument than this 1999 Olson SJ? Cedar over Indian Rosewood with cutaway and upgraded Orpheum position markers, L.R. Baggs Element VTS pickup, and brand new stainless steel frets—this Olson plays like grass-fed butter, with a voice to match. It’s a natural choice for fingerestyle; takes well to strumming as well. As Paul would say, this one’s got gears. And everything comes wrapped up in a custom Calton case for safety on those rare moments you won’t have this Olson in hand.

We just love Max Spohn’s contemporary flair, his expressive voicing, and great eye for tonewood. Even more, we love collaborating with Max on custom builds for our clients like this bespoke 00 12-Fret. Lovely figuring across the Birdseye Maple back and sides (matching up with the headstock veneers); Swiss Moonspruce on top with an offset geometric rosette and Ebony bindings—plus a sweet cardinal inlaid at the heelcap. Brass Scheller tuners round it out.
The voice is a delight. Small body roundness to the trebles, and there’s a meaty midrange (much more than we usually find on smaller bodies) that really fills it out. Note definition is crisp and smooth, with great balance across the registers. In short, it’s a helluva lot of tone from a petite package. It’s headed to its eager new home now! A Classical guitar with modern sensibilities: our 2005 McGill Picasso turns heads and tunes ears right out of the case. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides are here paired with a European Spruce top and Koa bindings and Paul’s dropped shoulder cutaway. The effect, when combined with the offset position markers, elliptical rosette, and open headstock, is to stand out from the nylon string crowd with an exciting flair. Elsewhere, McGill’s Picasso model offers some of the creature comforts of more progressively set up crossover guitars, like a slim 1.95” nut and cutaway, while maintaining the depth of response and color of a traditional classical guitar. The figured Cedar neck has a U-shaped profile that will feel instantly familiar, and Paul’s coaxed the setup into slinky territory for effortless playability.
Our McGill Picasso is the sort of Classical that’s not afraid to make a statement, and it backs it up with a rich and enveloping voice.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, nylon-string, crossover classical, classical music, nashville, fingerstyle

Smoothness, a clear fundamental, and balance across the registers are the defining traits of this 2010 Sexauer FT-14. The bass register’s warmth and presence pairs up perfectly with the precision and definition of the trebles, in a way that gives the voice a chocolatey richness that also exhibits great note separation. This is sometimes referred to as the piano effect, and it especially comes out with big, lush chords here. It’s a fabulous fingerstyle instrument. And at 14 1/2” across the lower bout and 3.5lbs, this FT-14 is also an incredibly comfortable guitar. The setup is correspondingly slinky smooth to boot. We enjoyed taking this one down to DADGAD, as much as we enjoyed it C9, Standard, and beyond. Bruce has a way of building guitars that offer a wide tonal palette for different applications, and we’re moore than excited that this Sexauer is no exception. On the tonewoods front, the back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood, with Italian Spruce on top and Maple purflings. Additionally, the bridge, fingerboard, and headstock veneer are also Brazilian Rosewood for added elegance. This 2010 Sexauer FT-14 is damn near perfect, in our opinion.

More of these, please! This D12 from the fine team at Santa Cruz is a wonderfully dynamic guitar, equally at home with fingerstyle and flatpicking. The voice has great balance and power, plus a meaty top end that really pumps out and away from the soundhole. It’s still pretty new from 2019, but already the voice is rich and open—especially impressive considering the Adirondack Spruce top, which is still opening up! 12 frets to the body, on a figured Maple neck, warms everything up for added sweetness, and this beauty was custom ordered with a 1 7/8” nut for an extra comfortable playing experience for the lefthand. The body boasts a lovely set of flitch-sawn Brazilian Rosewood with dramatic figure and dark brown coloration throughout. Ivoroid bindings, plus herringbone trim, round it all out.

A gorgeous, mostly original Gibson F4 from 1920. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top and a Varnish finish throughout, Ivoroid bindings and half rope rosette trim, original inlaid tuners and pickguard—it’s a sweetheart. Gibson wasn’t using adjustable bridges until the 1920s, so we believe this bridge was added afterwards, although the footprint of the bridge matches the impressions in the top finish. If it is replaced, it appears to have been done very early in its life. Our repair staff recently went over it from tuner to tail and have given it a clean bill of health (and refretting it for a killer setup).

Jason Kostal plus Michael Watts—the result is delicious indeed. These two have collaborated for a unique take on the Somogyi Modified Dreadnought body: shrink by 15%, then add a 12-fret neck and new bracing scheme, and the result is this piece of magic, the MDW. The smaller body dimensions make for an easy and effortless playing experience, as does the 12-fret neck join and 25” scale. Paired with Fiddleback Mahogany and German Spruce, the result is a combination of a quick fundamental and a sweet warmth in the overtones. It’s exquisite for fingerstyle thanks to those qualities and a crisp, easy balance from string to string and across the registers. This MDW (or MD Watts if you like) was recently finished in 2020 and is like new, but already quite wide awake and singing. Plus, that means this Kostal is only going to get better from this point forward—and it’s already so strong.

Once Adirondack Spruce has been played in enough, the woke tones it’s capable of are a thing to behold. Enter: this Petros Applecreek D model from 2009 with Brazilian Rosewood to boot. The voice is easy, smooth, and velvety rich; in the bass you have the perfect amount of emotive darkness, while the trebles remain cool and round and defined. The midrange is present and articulate to bridge the gap. What a fabulous fingerstyle instrument! The Adirondack soundboard has truly bloomed into a powerhouse since ’09, and paired with BRW and the large Petros D body (16” at the lower bout) the result is a big, energetic voice plus excellent string-to-string balance. What more could you ask for?

We love Mark Blanchard’s work, hands down. And we love, even more, working with Mark on custom guitars for the shop—check out this first Dream Series Tamarack model for proof of the level of magic he’s capable of. Plus this beauty has opened up deliciously since that collaboration in 2008. The voice is wide awake and vibrant, with an expressive bottom end that dovetails into sweet mids and defined trebles. A fantastic fingerstyle guitar. The back and sides are from our personal DG stash of Brazilian Rosewood, which Mark paired a European Spruce soundboard to, plus a wedge body and arm rest for creature comforts. A slim soundport in the upper bout adds a little “me in the monitors” for the player, and gold EVO frets are in fine shape, even after 13 years of music.
