Gorgeous from tuner to tail, this 2017 Kenneth Brogger looks as great as it plays. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides pairs up with an incredibly figured Bearclaw Spruce top for a stunning look, plus Kenneth ties it all together with crow’s feet top trim and Rosewood bindings. The slim build weight of 3lbs 12oz keeps this concert instrument comfortable in-hand, and the neck-to-body weight ratio makes for an easy balance when played on either leg. This is a fabulous example of a concert quality build, especially dressed up to look the part.

Mike Blanchard’s Bristlecone weighs in a touch larger than a traditional OM, and that extra depth adds presence and power to the voice, without launching full tilt into a large guitar. Instead, the Bristlecone is easy in hand and a lively singer. Great string energy and responsiveness, with a voice characterized by balance and clarity, makes for a fine fingerpicking experience. This lovely number from 2000 has Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with Adirondack Spruce on top, plus Curly Maple bindings to really set it off. Setup is slinky and smooth, with a lovely neck carve that feels comfortable from nut to heel.

Loïc Bortot of Bouchereau Guitars is here with a powerhouse MJ.C small jumbo in Honduran Mahogany and Alpine Spruce that’s a force to be reckoned with. Smooth balance across the registers, plus precise trebles to cut through the mix; a dynamic color palette in the mids that really blooms in lowered tunings; and a crisp bottom end to tie it together. The woods are gorgeous, especially the tightly figured Honduran Mahogany back and sides, which Bortot pairs up with Rosewood bindings for an understated look. The body and headplate are buffed to a clear gloss, but the neck is satin smooth, velvet to the touch. We’re very much fans of this neck. The rosette features an interlocking motif for centerpiece. Throw in an arm bevel for creature comfort, and you’ve got a brand new MJ.C that’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears, and even the hands.

This one practically moves on its own. So much energy under the hood! We simply love how alive and vibrant Marc Maingard’s 000s are, and this one’s one of the most electric we’ve seen. Opening up since 2007, it’s fantastically awake and raring to go. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides match up with a lovely, creamy European Spruce top, 12 fret neck join, and arm & rib bevels for creature comfort. Aesthetically, Marc’s distinctive headplate design is set off with custom tuners and the rosette pops in turquoise (echoed with similar purflings along the top, back, and heelcap).
The voice is quick, immediate, vigorous. The registers mix up nicely, with a crisp bottom end that feels like it’s leaping out of the soundhole. Playability is gossamer to boot, and the 12-fret neck makes the 25.4” scale feel extra easy in hand.
This Maingard is a powerhouse’s powerhouse, the guitar that a guitar would play if a guitar could play.Other keywords: south africa, lutherie, ooo, hiscox, brazilain, euro spruce, 251

Belgian luthier Walter Verreydt has been a mainstay in the world of lutherie for decades, teaching at the Centrum voor Muziekinstrumentenbouw in Belgium since 1988. We’re grateful for the opportunity to offer this 2020 Premium model outfitted with top shelf tonewoods and intricate marquetry. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (with contrasting black silk lines and chocolate browns); European Spruce on top adorned with diamond purflings and an exquisitely detailed rosette; lattice bracing and elegant Scheller tuners. French Polished throughout to let these woods shine. The voice is characterized by a smoothness and balance across the registers that really lets chords ring out with clarity and definition. The bass register has a lively, focused nature with loots of projection, and pairs up sweetly with a crisp top end.

Greg Byers’ Classicals are defined by a taste of innovation that’s based in tradition. With this bent top model from 2011, that’s fully on display. Byers combines a European Spruce top that’s ‘bent’ towards the heel with an elevated fingerboard to preload the top with tension and provide easier lefthand access to the uppermost frets. The result is handsome, distinct, and oh so easy on the hands. Sides are made up of straight-grain Indian Rosewood, with a 12-hole tieblock on top, 650mm scale, and a fantastically transparent French Polish finish throughout. The voice is characterized by a dark, emotive definition that really sings in the bass and mids, with a focused top end to tie it all together. We love the colors Byers employs in the rosette, paired up with wheat purflings, for a subtly dramatic effect that’s echoed with the marquetry at the center of the headplate.

This Froggy may be nearly new from 2020, but it’s wide eyed and wide awake. What a fun model M Deluxe! Adirondack Spruce over Mahogany makes for quick attack, crunchy bottom end, and a lively projection that’s equally at home with a flatpick or fingernails. The M body fits into the Grand Concert camp of playability and comfort while maintaining a sizable air cavity for volume and depth of tone. Throw in a short scale setup to warm it up a bit and keep those strings easy on the fingers, and you’ve got a Froggy Bottom that’s effortless and incredibly fun. Being their Deluxe appointment package, this M has a lovely Abalone rosette which sets off the sunburst top, paired with an Abalone backstrip and Curly Maple bindings to round it out. If it’s good enough for the likes of Tony McManus and Ricky Skaggs, it’s good enough for us. In fact, this 2010 PRS Tonare Grand was built for Mr. Skaggs himself! Here dressed to the nines in Pernambuco (back, sides, neck, fingerboard, bridge, rosette, bindings) with Adirondack Spruce on top for added power and cut. The voice is crisp and dry, with a quick decay that lends itself especially well to maintaining good note definition when playing faster passages. Setup is slick and smooth, and with a 1 11/16” nut and 25 1/4” scale it feels comfortable for long sessions at the wheel. 16 inches across the lower bout makes for added projection and sheer volume, which this PRS uses to great effect. MOP doves adorn the fretboard, terminating at the rosette and matching up with the inner MOP ring there, as well as MOP trim along the top.

The Italian voice of lutherie is strong, indeed, if this 2019 Classical from Lorenzo Frignani is any indication. We were immediately struck by the power and presence of the voice, paired with a lively bass register and a lovely mixture of roundness and precision in the trebles. The Italian Spruce top (from the Val di Fiemme, rumored to be the valley where Stradavarius harvested his timbers) responds handsomely to a range of attacks, offering up a wide dynamic palette of colors depending on the piece. Indian Rosewood back and sides pair it up with Rosewood bindings, Alessi tuners at the headstock, and a Spanish Cedar neck with gorgeous light flame for a touch of drama. A high gloss French Polish finish lets all these woods shine at their best, and this Classical weighs in at a slim playing weight of just over three pounds.

German luthier Jochen Röthel wields his chisels like a chef his knives, coaxing a work of functional art that charms the senses with a myriad of flavors and textures, tones. This 2020 Classical is a feast most sumptuous. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides with rich reds and dramatic figure pairs with Red Cedar on top, Ebony bindings, and a mosaic rosette of diamonds in Rosewood. Gold Scheller tuners (also of Germany) add a touch of elegance to the headstock; otherwise Röthel leaves the woods to speak for themselves. And what a voice they wield. The trebles have an immediacy and power that draws the ear in, without overpowering the bass or mids. The bottom end is deliciously warm and adds a richness and presence in which we lost track of time each time we sat down to play. Delicious, indeed.

Considered by many to be the heir to the Daniel Freiderich legacy, french luthier Dominique Delarue offers builds which marry a strong fundamental in the bass with clean, defined trebles and a colorful midrange—qualities this beauty from 2011 has in spades. We love the power and projection, paired with added warmth and presence in the mids. Jakob Lebisch suffuses poise, presence, and a sumptuously diverse tonal palette throughout the voice on this 2020 Double Top. Simply incredible. We’re flabbergasted by the velvetness of the trebles; there’s an alluring blooming quality, with cool overtones, that’s rarely seen. That top end mixes up flawlessly with a warm, articulate midrange—and the bass response fill out the voice with an easy warmth and roundness that hangs in the air. Lebisch’s double top construction adds power for the concert hall, but not at the cost of elegance and tonal range which many double top designs suffer from. On the tonewood front, Lebisch is working with classics, a combination of Indian Rosewood body with a doubled Italian Spruce top, Spanish Cedar neck, and a unique Ebony rosette inlaid with brass that further sets this guitar apart. The build weight is an incredible 2lbs 15oz! And gold Scheller tuners to round out the image, plus a gloss-finished 12-hole bridge.
Jakob Lebisch has built a lifetime concert instrument with this one, and we’re so excited to get it into your hands.Other keywords: classical guitar, classical, nylon string, luthier, lutherie, fingerstyle, marquetry, handmade, french polished, steve newbrough, andy jurik, hiscox

The Classical guitar community lost the great Thomas Humphrey too soon in 2008, and that loss has been felt ever since. We’re grateful and honored to have one of his last Millenium models, built in 2007, here to offer. The Millennium design, now ubiquitous in contemporary Classical construction, features Humphrey’s elevated fingerboard, dramatic body taper, and hybrid X bracing. The results are felt in both playability and tone: this Humphrey Millennium is easy on the hands and has an incredibly distinct voice. The treble register pushes out and away from the soundhole with great clarity and weight; the voice has a visceral quality that is mesmerizing. The body boasts chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Cedar on top and a floral mosaic rosette.
