2017 Somogyi Diospyros Modified Dreadnought, Ebony/European Spruce
A feat as only Ervin could achieve. Modified Dreadnought #500, Ervin’s “Diospyros” (Latin for Ebony) guitar, is comprised of over 500 pieces of Ebony and Yellowheart in a tiled spread along the back and sides. The effect, to mirror the paving stones Ervin once saw in a photograph of a Mexican village street, is rendered by painstakingly inlaying irregularly sized and shaped tiles, each with purflings.
According to Ervin, it was “an anonymous street somewhere in Mexico, that was made of paving stones that had been arranged and fitted together by some past work crew. The stones were not fitted together in a grid pattern but were instead set in randomly as far as size and shape went. The entire thing gave a sense of Order in Chaos that very much appealed to me.”
The tiles (none of them perfectly square) are shaped to fit the exact curvature of the body—all 500 of them. Between the tiles, Ervin inlaid over 3000 “grout” segments of green veneers, and this doesn’t include the inlays along the back of the neck. For the top, Ervin picked out a pale European Spruce top and carved a pattern of 13 celtic hounds around the soundhole (eyes of Abalone, backed by handmade Japanese washi paper).
There simply isn’t anything quite like this anywhere else. We looked. It’s a pinnacle of the art form of modern lutherie.

Hand-etched and inlaid diamonds and stars along the fretboard, and a gryphon head at the headplate pointing towards a final star. The inlay and etching work is in a category all of its own: we don’t know anyone else who’s working at this level in the banjo world than Bob Anderson.

Bruce Sexauer’s touch brings tonewood to life in a way only Bruce can. This brand new FT-16-C “Penngrove” model is in its own category of flattop, outfitted with a wedge body, multiscale fretboard, oil varnish finish, and gorgeous woods to boot. Panama Rosewood (D. tucurensis) back and sides with Adirondack Spruce on top, and a Honduran Mahogany neck. The Penngrove weighs in at a trim 3lbs 14oz, and plays like grass-fed butter; it’s a dream machine for a wide range of tunings and attacks. The banner Gibsons are among the most revered vintage pieces, and we’ve landed a fantastic example of a 1944 Southern Jumbo to prove the point. In particular, this piece has an Adirondack Spruce top, rather than the more common all-Mahogany SJs of the time. This one’s seen its fair share of action across its almost eighty years of living, but our repair maestros have gone over it tailpiece to tuners and give it a clean bill of health. This vintage Gibson is ready for more action, and boy is it itching for strumming (or flatpicking, or fingerstyle for that matter). And it’s got a James May Ultra Tonic pickup to carry you right onto the stage for accurate, acoustic amplified tone.

The tone is simply exquisite with full bass and strong trebles. The Madagascar Rosewood here is simply stunning, and pairs handsomely with Cedar for a warm midrange but very crisp treble response. This one comes to us from 2001, and is ready for action with fresh refinish by our own repair shop–and what a beauty!

Modern lutherie maestro Max Spohn brings real weight to bear in this brand new MD-C model in Quilted Sapele and Swiss Moonspruce. Max’s take on the Modified Dreadnought shape exhibits a tight waist, trim upper bout at 10 7/8”, and here a florentine cutaway for maximum fretboard access. Eschewing a traditional rosette, Max laid down some geometry with right angles, diagonals, and a blue purfling to join up with the Maple top trim. This motif is echoed across the headstock with its Spruce veneer as well.
The voice is dialed in for quick response and an even note separation from string to string; we love the clarity and definition. Smooth, smooth, smooth.Other keywords: fingerstyle, fingerpicking, moon spruce, swiss spruce, modern guitar

Honestly, does this thing have a ceiling? Cuz we can’t find it. We laid into it with a multitude of tunings, attacks, nails and picks, and “Big Pink” kept coming back for more. Well, we did learn one thing: this Klein’s got bottom end to spare. Our teeth are still chattering at the memory of playing it. Steve Klein and Steve Kauffman have pulled off an incredible feat here with this 457 model. Jaw dropping Pink Ivory for the back and sides are matched with a Pink Ivory fretboard, bridge, and headstock veneer—and they pulled out a gorgeously bearclaw figured Sitka Spruce top (at a fearsome 17” lower bout, we wonder where they found these sets?). And Larry Robinson flowers and vines round out the package at the headstock.
The voice is exactly what you’d expect from Klein & Kauffman: huge, expansive, voluminous, and at the same time precise, clear, defined. We don’t know how they manage to strike that razor edge balance, but the proof is in the Big Pink-flavored pudding.Other keywords: custom guitar, custom build, lutherie, luthier, steve kauffman, steve klein, big guitar, bass response, gotoh, ameritage

The Vintage Series embodies understated elegance. The traditional aesthetics of a spruce top fused with a robust unidirectional carbon soundboard is finished with an amber tint and supplemented with simple appointments.
The Dreadnought is the traditional workhorse of acoustic guitar music. With a large, deep body and wide waist, RainSong’s DR has the powerful bass and ringing treble of a great rhythmic guitar, but still maintains a wonderfully balanced sound, with clear distinction among individual notes. From rhythm to lead, the DR makes its presence known. Capable of cutting through admirably in any acoustic setting, the DR is loud enough to compete with banjoes, mandolins and other traditional volume hogs.
Note, these photos represent this model from Rainsong, not the specific guitar we have in stock.
