2019 Preston Thompson D-SBA, Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Strong yet balanced, this 2019 D-SBA from Preston Thompson is a powerhouse Dreadnought, hands down. They used a lovely set of their coveted Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, pairing it with a sunburst Adirondack Spruce top and herringbone trim for a classic, timeless look. The top is pretty tight grained for Ady, and looks so lovely with the shaded border.
This PKT is nearly new, and has a richer, more energetic tone than we were expecting from a guitar built so recently in 2019. No complaints! Abalone torch inlaid at the headstock, Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons, and a snug-fitting Harptone case to wrap it all up. Are you ready for a guitar to blow you away, every time you pick it up? Look no further: inspiration has arrived.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, flatpicking, allen shadd, bluegrass, dreadnaught, preston thompson guitars, pkt guitars, oregon, blue grass, flatpicker

Michael, Michael, Michael, you’ve done it again. This 2018 Greenfield G2 is proof of the golden era of modern lutherie: flawlessly built, resonant to a T, effortlessly playable. This is a well-oiled machine for fingerstyle, strumming, whatsoever your guitar heart desires. African Blackwood back and sides pair up with an Alpine Moonspruce top, arm bevel, and florentine cutaway. EVO frets for longevity, 25 3/4” scale for a crisp, defined bass response that carries right on down to C# without batting an eye. It’s just incredible. The voice is characterized by the massive, juicy, enveloping flavors that we’ve come to expect from Michael Greenfield: individual notes are very, very strong—chords ring out like entire instruments unto themselves. We cannot recommend this G2 more highly.

Perfectly in tune, right on down to D and C tunings: our 2018 Klein & Kaufman 396, and yes, it comes in multiscale. 26.25” on the bass on down to 25.125” on the trebles, the spread is a pinch over an inch and makes for easy playability and reliable string tension and intonation in altered tunings. Sitka Spruce top, Flamed Koa back and sides, Maple bindings and gold EVO frets for longevity. This Klein is built for the long haul.
There’s excellent string definition, especially between the A and D strings, that helps render notes in crisp detail. There’s clarity to the treble overtones, and a lively response across the board. There’s a lot, frankly, going on. We love how easily this one plays, and at only 4lbs 1oz, this Klein 396 is featherlight in your hands. Try this one on for size, and we promise it’ll fit snug as a glove, if gloves came in such gorgeous colors as this Flamed Koa and Sitka Spruce.Other keywords: steve klein, multi scale, fan fret, fanned fret, steve kaufman, lutherie, luthier

If you’ve ever heard of Wayne Henderson, you already know the pedigree of this D-42. Let’s take at a look at this cadillac of Dreadnoughts, the 2008 Henderson D-42. It might be a few years old, but it looks like we just took it out of its original packaging; we were hard-pressed to find even the slightest scratch. As such, the 42-style appointments shine in pristeen glory: delicately-colored Abalone trim surrounds the body and outlines the fretboard extension, rings the soundhole, is inlaid into the Ebony fretboard itself in snowflakes and diamonds, then culminates in a sparkling display of Wayne’s name and a floral inlay on the Brazilian Rosewood headstock veneer.
If this guitar were any prettier, we’d rent it out for beauty pagents rather than sell it outright–but that would be a dishonor to the voice that lurks beneath the flawless surface. Its previous owner must have impeccable technique: for all that it appears to have been untouched, one strum of the strings reveals that the Appalachian Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides have been consistently played and has opened up magnificently. As if that wasn’t enough to get your salivary glands going, Wayne’s D-42 has one more trick up his sleeve (or soundhole): this Dreadnought performs as beautifully for fingerpicking as it does with a flatpick. An anomaly, we know, not really what you expect, but where there’s a will there’s a Wayne. Given that he’s an absurdly talented fingerpicker, in addition to being a luthier, he was probably thinking of how to make this guitar sound the best when it’s down to just your fingers and the strings.
Once plucked, you’d better hold on for the ride: the voice is ferocious, with a well-defined low-end and treble notes to put a songbird to shame. We practically guarantee that whatever tune you decide to play on this Henderson D-42, you’ll never want to hear it from another guitar, again. Period.

A Ted Åstrand guitar will bring you to tears. Flawless construction, understated and clean lines, and a voice that inspires at the first pluck. The tone is precise to a T, and so darn clean; a powerful fingerstyle guitar for Standard or Open Tunings.

This sweet little package was in our hands then out the door in a matter of hours! One of James Olson’s gorgeous Parlor guitars from the 1990s, it’s no surprise that someone snatched it up so quickly. The voice is strong and clear, with great separation of notes and a bell-like cadence. Considering that Olson’s SJs have such a vigorous and powerful voice, it’s not surprising that this 1999 Parlor should also have that kind of strength. The Western Red Cedar provides a rich, warm timbre to the instrument, and Olson picked a tight-grained Indian Rosewood set to complement and round out the sound. This little cannon, as a result, is a powerful and dynamic guitar, with sublime playability and tone. This guitar comes with the original Calton Flight Case.
