Jim Olson is at the top of his game, and playing this Tree Olson is like standing on top of a mountain—but much, much warmer. We love just how warm, responsive, and enveloping this 2018 Olson SJ plays. And why be surprised? Highly figured The Tree Mahogany back and sides with a pale Cedar top—of course it’s going to sing like a blazing fire. Individual note definition comes with a whole host of rich, velvety overtones. Built only yesterday in 2018, this Olson is basically new, plays like a dream, and boasts intricate floral and thorn inlays along the fretboard from the inimitable Larry Robinson. An honest-to-god collector’s passion.

The folks at the Heritage Guitar Company have been hard at work in the old Gibson buildings of Kalamazoo for decades now, building incredible electrics and archtops to compete with the best out there. We recently landed a 2011 Super KB (Kenny Burrell) that is a 100% testament to that statement: this guitar is a fabulous example of Maple, Spruce, and sweet, sweet Jazz tone. Twin humbucking pickups, 18 inches across the expansive lower bout, and a sharp Florentine Cutaway come together in a tasteful, natural finish package. Carved Spruce top with parallel bracing is paired with nicely figured Maple back and sides (and neck, and pickguard) and adjustable finger tailpiece.
These beauties are built in very limited batches, and this is the first time we’ve seen one in a while. Snag it while you can!

From the late, great Robert Ruck, we’ve got a powerhouse Concert Classical in Indian Rosewood & Cedar itching to be played. This beauty comes to us from all the way back in 1996. The voice is lively and rich and quick, with a brisk fundamental that packs some serious weight. The setup is feather smooth, and the neck profile feels equally easy in hand. Ruck’s addition of a Venetian Cutaway allows the player quick access to the entire fingerboard, even those dusty uppermost frets. The current owner has upgraded the head with new Rodgers tuners that really set off the black headstock veneer, not to mention operate smoothly with hardly any resistance.
A concert-calibre Ruck Classical, this one’s eager to keep singing.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, ir, east indian, fingerstyle, classical guitar, classical, nylon string, nylon-string, 650mm, tkl, mosaic

Well lookie here! We’ve landed a dream machine of a guitar from the hands of one of America’s finest: Tom Ribbecke and his Testadura MK model. Tight fiddleback Maple back, Indian Rosewood sides, and Sitka Spruce on top of this hollow body/semi-hollow (more on that duality later) guitar—done up in a striking blue hue that sets off the gold hardware and Koa bindings. Single humbucker with volume and tone knobs built into the underside of the Ebony pickguard, upper bout soundhole, weighs in at 7lbs 5oz. This 2019 Testadura MK features one of Tom’s unique additions to the electric world: an internal system to switch between a 330 and 335, or hollow body and semi-hollow respectively. There’s a small block, shaped in a subtle wedge, that can be easily installed through the pickup cavity and a custom tool (we’ve got one here with the guitar, no worries) which pulls the block into place inside the guitar, effectively coupling the back and top and creating a semi-hollow.

There may be no such thing as the perfect guitar, but this 2018 McConnell is just about as close as you’re going to get. Jordan’s unique brand of lutherie makes for some of the most inspirational guitars we’ve ever seen, and this 2018 16 Inch model does. not. disappoint. This is Jordan’s first African Blackwood guitar, topped with Swiss Moonspruce and trimmed out with matching arm and rib bevels. Spiraling along the fretboard and headstock (before swirling around the soundhole is a combination of Satinwood, African Blackwood, Ebony, and Madagascar Rosewood. Rodgers tuners (of course), French Polish on top for maximum resonance, and a fabulous example of Jordan’s carved bridge (here in Madagascar Rosewood). Oh, and then there’s the multiscale fretboard (26 to 25 inches) for dialed in ergonomics and intonation across a spectrum of tunings.

Smooth response all along the neck, liquid trebles and a capacious bottom end, and this Å-OM takes naturally to modified tunings like Open D, as easily as it performs in Standard. We love the unique corner of prewar lutherie occupied by the Larson Brothers. Reputed to have built hundred and hundreds of instruments, never under their own name, these brothers have created a body of work that stands apart from other prewar builders on my levels. One particular label of theirs was Stahl, and we’ve got a lovely example of their Style 6 here today. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides over Spruce, 12 frets to the body and gone over by our repair staff with a clean bill of health! At some point, this Stahl was refinished, so it’s got a mix of newer gloss look and vintage, prewar volume and presence. An immensely fun little guitar, it handles fingerpicking just as easily as strumming and flatpick work too.

Santa Cruz Guitar Company has been consistently producing Dreadnoughts for decades which have set the bar pretty high for all competition, and this 1992 VA (Vintage Artist) with “The Tree” Mahogany and a 100-year-old Sitka Spruce top, is here to make sure that bar is raised even higher. Excellently balanced, this Vintage Artist has lots to offer for both the flatpicker and the fingerstylist. Are you the former, craving a Dreadnought with rich, explosive projection, or the latter, needing a clean, energetic response and string-to-string precision?
Regardless of your needs, this Vintage Artist can more than handle them! You’ll rip through flatpicked Bluegrass tunes like they were butter for starters, then you can showcase this Santa Cruz’s delicate side with a fingerpicked Doc Watson tune–all the time enjoying the rich voice and silky playability. This is number two of just 10 VAs that Santa Cruz made with The Tree Mahogany, so odds are you won’t see another beauty like this one for some time.

You don’t mess around with Jim, indeed. This 2000 Martin D-21JCB Jim Croce is a fundamental powerhouse Dread, dressed up in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce with a 1973 dime inlaid at the third fret. The neck is a slim number with a 1 11/16” nut, plays fantastically, and is an easy fit for the left hand. Nickel Grover tuners up top, and black bindings to pair up with matching bridge pins and pickguard. This beauty is a natural choice for the singer-songwriter, but is more than up to the task of keeping up with the Bluegrass session to boot!

Martin folks did it so well back in the day, Martin folks these days are taking note (for note) with their Authentic line. This handsome OM-28 Authentic 1931 is a charmer with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce, and otherwise matching specs to Martin’s vintage 1931 OM-28 model. That means hide glue construction, scalloped bracing on top, and Martin’s VTS (Vintage Tone System) for pre-aging the tonewoods for added vintage presence. Over everything Martin also applied their Vintage Gloss finish, which is a thinner and less shiny finish that you’ll find on other contemporary models.
The voice on this 2015 OM-28 Authentic is lively, warm, and responsive. An even decay across the registers makes for clean projection and sustain, and it’s such a versatile fellow for both fingerstyle and flat picking.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, c.f. martin, martin guitars, orchestra model, 000, fingerpicking, adriondack, wavily, hiscox, reissue

Well, well, well. We’ve got a handsome prize on our hands here: a 2015 DB Signature from Bourgeois Guitars that’s got gorgeous tonewoods, hide glue construction, and a flawless fit-n-finish. Light-colored Koa back and sides are paired with a Croatian Spruce top (boasting the results of Dana’s Aged Tone torrefication process), Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons, and Fossilized Mammoth Ivory squares and diamonds inlaid along the fretboard. This Bourgeois doesn’t need much encouragement to really project, and it doesn’t top out easily to boot. We love this one with a flatpick almost as much as we do for fingerpicking; it lives up to the jack-of-all-trades reputation of the OM body.
